I owe a great thanks to a Indian motel owner who allowed my mum and dad to stay over a month at their motel and didn't charge a penny because mum was going thru a cancer treatment. Very generous owner. He didn't even charge for the food. My mum and dad told this to us once they were back in India. Thank you very much.

Michael King They won't because Americans are generally very hard to help. They have ego the size of Mount Rushmore. They look at every act of kindness with suspicion, not so much the case with the Asians who like to put their trust on people.

Most patels are huge business families even in India. I am from an Indian state called Assam, natives being the Assamese, here too people from Gujarat own big businesses. Gujaratis and Marwaris are business oriented communities. They know the art of making money.

In the UK - Patels owned all the corner stores. They replaced the Smiths. Now Patels lost interest in corner stores in U.K. Kids grown up & became doctors, business etc.
It's simply hard work - no substitute. Most Patels in US now own hotel franchises not motels.

    • @TheGuyNobodyReallyLikes
      @TheGuyNobodyReallyLikes 4 роки тому +15

@@hardcandy7112 But that also depends on how much the White population is marrying outside their own people. There are those whites who are having mixed marriages and reducing their own pure white population. Then there is the issue of the population of USA decreasing because of low birthrates. The American population is mostly maintained because of immigration. And then there is the issue of feminism and MGTOW. Men are no longer interested in getting married or having children because of all the problems it causes while being married. Divorce forces men to lose their money and property, and they are also stuck with paying for child support and maintenance. White women are seen as trouble. So, white men aren't marrying white women, but choosing to remain single. It just all leads to a lower white population. Even without others trying to take over, the white population is still becoming a minority because of the modern day issues. The same is occurring in Japan because people aren't getting married. The Japanese population has reduced by 1 million.

A couple of years ago, a buddy of mine and I took cross country trip from California to New York and back. Over the 4 week trip, I'd say a clear 80% of the motels we stayed in were owned by Indians. They slept in their motels and were very kind to wake up so late and give us a room on the evenings that we decided to grab a room at a late hour. Great segment!

I've stayed in many motels owned/run by Indians (yes, often named Patel), and I have found most of them to be fine with the hotel sincerely concerned with providing excellent service. One thing I have noticed (which doesn't bother me) is that many of them are not landscaped--that is, the parking lot meets the sidewalk that meets the building. I suspect landscaping is simply a low priority and provides minimal economic returns for the owners. I love Indian food, so I'm disappointed that very few have an Indian restaurant!

I would also add that their children do not appear to take to the family business. From my experience they are all doctors, lawyers, engineers or they work in finance. I remember years ago, when I was lost about the Greater San Francisco area in 2000... Just about every hotel we went to to freshen up was owned or at least run by an Indian. Think about what it means when you, born in your own land, is homeless, and someone who is probably first-generation foreigner, owns the place you take refuge in! THAT was karma, apparently. I don't know what I did wrong in a previous life, but I hope to run out of bad karma soon, as I just had surgery to repair a detached retina, which has wiped out my cash savings. This was an unsettling feeling I had when we walked into hotel after hotel in the area, and I didn't see a SINGLE white person behind the counter like I used to in Texas in the 70s growing up.
I just don't understand how to get from the white American mentality that arises from the 1950s-1960s-born generation, where everything was made easy for them by their parents (post-war period) to that of the enterprising Hindu Indians who are apparently able to make money from nothing (I realize that this statement is a contradiction to Brahman transforming energy from an unmanifest, potential form into a manifest, material form like the universe - you don't make something from nothing, but that is how it appears to us, like magic).
They are amazing, because they somehow make it happen. It's not so much the "method" of how they did it, but the mental set up in their minds, given that a lot of them are Hindu and have the image of America as the country to be in. That has me trying to understand to help me shift into an enterprising or bold mindset to take a risk in something. For some reason, I have the feeling that it is near time for me to immigrate to India to get something going, as it seems to be in a position to become a superpower in its own right, and a lot of interesting things will happen there in the coming years, and I would like to be a part of that.

Nice room with fridge (first encounter with in room fridge), and great breakfast bar (first experience with breakfast bar as opposed to "continental" pastry). This was in 1996. 18 months ago, I got banned from the Benbrook, Texas Comfort Suites for calling Choice Corporate. The young female Indian-American manager was pissed at me for doing that and let me know it. She doesn't belong in hospitality. The GM was listed as a Patel. The owner, probably also Indian, sided with the manager. Choice confirmed I'm banned. Other people have complained about Patel properties on social media.

A lot of the Indian motel owners actually came from Africa. During British rule, lots of Indians were taken to Africa to work in indentured servitude. Many of the future generations of these Indians became successful business owners and landlords. When these African nations became independent from the British, they no longer wanted the Indians there and Indians were often convenient scapegoats for the countries' ills. So, many Indians sold their businesses and land and moved to the UK and US. Restaurants and motels were good businesses into which they could put the money they brought with them from Africa.

Where I live in Alabama I went to school with multiple “Patels” they lived in a local hotel. I’m in a very small town and all hotels and almost all except 3-4 hotels and gas stations are owned by patels. I’m in business and I’ve worked for a few since then and a guy named Mike Patel I worked for I became friends with and he explained to me the last name Patel is basically a gang but in a good way, they adopt the name and all look after each other and either hire each other or get them started and share their wealth. That’s why so many “Patels” own gas and hotel stops.

Actually India is an old civilization. So people who settled along trade routes became business communities. Patels, Agarwals and many such last names are business communities of India. Thank you so much for this video. I have wondered about this since the '70's when I began to notice that a lot of Mom & Pop markets where owned by Arabs and then I noticed a lot of small motels were being bought by Indians. I have wondered why all these years. I wondered is there a broker in India pitching motel opportunities? My grandfather sold a small motel beside his house years ago before he built another 25 room motel and then two more when I75 was built. His original motel which still used his name beside his home was bought by an Indian fellow. They formed a friendship w my grandfather mentoring the Indian fellow. I didn't want to offend the motel owner by asking why so many Indians picked small motels to buy. So now thanks to this video, I know the answer at last. Thank you?

    • @mewtubeofficial

Indians are usually not offended by any questions. We lack a lot of filter ourselves. We are a little rough around the edges that way. America born Indians may be sensitive, but immigrant generations are not. Indians love to talk about their roots and backgrounds. India is such an old civilization that regions with ports was almost entirely trader class. If you see the location of Gujrat on the map, you will understand how all the pieces fit.

Gets a F for ignoring a major part of the history - the sudden influx of Gujarati Indians from Uganda when Idi Amin threw them out of his country literally overnight in 1971. Many of them were wealthy business people in Uganda but were forced to leave. They managed to smuggle out significant amounts of personal money when they came to America and invested them in the low to mid-end motel business. That is the real genesis of so many Indians owning Patel-Motels.

Saana, good job. One thing that is missing which is very key to immigrants by business growth is employability and scalability. As you said Patel's lived in their hotels but they also kept the economic benefit by working it themselves and having family members do it because many were not employable anyways (older parents, lack of English, undocumented migrants). The second key aspect is scalability. Hotels and motels have a huge real estate component which allows an owner to mortgage the property and replicate the model quickly. This lead to proliferation.
Koreans took on cash businesses for different economic benefits.
Punjabis took in trucking and gas stations.
The economic aspect is a key part above and beyond the cultural. It all ties into together.
Keep up the great work and I love your channel.

Regarding people not supporting Indian hotels, I have OFTEN visited Indian owned establishments in the Midwest, which were below standard! While staying at a hotel in St. Louis, I confronted the owners that our air condition didn't work, the sheets were dirty and the toilet stopped up, this fell on deaf ears. At breakfast we were treated rudely! My son was pouring milk onto his cereal when an Indian woman literally took the milk cartoon out of his hands and told him he had ten minutes to finish his meal and leave! I could go on especially the mistreatment and poor service given between Indians and Blacks, which when you think of it is ridiculous because both minorities are mistreated by the majority population.
My point is this: regardless of race, ethnicity or gender, most Indian along with other minorities establishments are not patronized because of poor service and stereotypical negative behaviors toward customers! This is not true in ALL situations, but does sum up why people don't frequent Indian establishment and why minorities don't patronize each other's businesses . I think minority owned businesses--regardless if Indian, Japanese, Black, Mexican--should refocus their energies on service and producing a quality product. If not a once lucrative market will disappear.

Gujjus and marwardis together own almost 40% of big firms in India.
There is always a business environment in there community .
Growing up ,I was never been said to become doctor , engineer or lawyer .
For them , it's just tactic study commerce , do a job for 3-4 yrs and then indulge somewhere in business .

I am a Patel I am a fifth generation to live in America (for my fam) My grandparents moved here with 2 kids and a whole family waiting for them to have enough money to support them. My grandparents started with 20 dollars, my grandparents had Indian education which at that time was not expected in America so they had to learn English, find jobs, and send 2 kids to school. Eventually my grandparents had money for a one room apartment luckily my grandparents had savings and had stable jobs. They bought a hotel and that was the beginning of the family business. They all worked there then they got a gas station, and then they bought their first home which is the home I live in. My grandparents are now retired they worked so hard in their lives I am very thankful for the opportunity they gave us. In this video when they said Gujaratis are usually business workers that is a true statement from the stories passed through generation I learned they there were multiple social classes in india (back before 2000) and we were in business all this time.

Its weird how a hotel owner or corporate manager would find the most unqualified no commonsense backwards person with no concept of cleanliness or common hotel orchestration skills to be the general manager of the hotel, I have worked in hospitality for 20 years and its always the same, a dumb general manager then hires a dumb housekeeping manager who has no general cleaning skills whatsoever, and the owners wonder why their new hotel is so run down after a very short time, the hotel I work at now is the Same way, everything is orchestrated backwards inside out and upside down, nothing is ever done the right way especially cleaning, because of my experience working in hotels and know how they are operated, I will NEVER stay in any hotel ever, check into your hotel room and are at serious risk of contracting hepatitis A or MRSA, they won't allow you to clean the rooms correctly they just want to sell the room even if a big pile of shit is in the livingroom, Its disgusting

You sound like a hater. If you think its so easy, go buy one and run it yourself. How can you have worked in the industry for 20 years and not become an owner? That is embarrassing. I’m sure you can find an owner willing to sell to you. Owner financing is the best option. And do not procrastinate. Don’t be a quitabitch

This woman is showing favoritism of opinion. Many of the hotels that the asian indians bought were old hotels that people used to fall back on if things went wrong. Poor Americans, businessmen who failed since it is hard to start a business, war veterans with battle related illnesses or alcoholism from war all used to move into these hotels when their finances failed. Then these foreigners came here, bought all those places up, fixed so many up and shot the prices sky high that there was no place for many to go anymore. It sounds more like someone put this woman on this video to decorate these new corrupt businessmen and landlords. In some cases being a landlord is no good, since the ones who charge too much prey on the labor of other people. The old landlords are angels when compared to landlords who are nothing but nightmares. Some government officials talk about public housing as an answer to this; but a commune in exchange for what we once had is not a fair exchange.

One major point you are missing is that Patels are generally and mostly from the Merchant 'Varna', which is called Vaishya in Hindu Society. This has nothing to do with 'Caste' (which anyway is a made up word used to defame and divide Hindus).
This is not a small point. In Hindu society, people's Dharma (their purpose, their duty, how they think, how they live, etc.) is defined by what sector of society that they belong to. Patel households (eg. Vaishya households) are very different from the households of other Hindus for a good reason, because they focus on accumulating wealth, have a materialistic outlook on life, and even discuss business at the dinner table and in conversation.
The reason Patels are so good at business is because they have been doing it for hundreds of generations and have gotten very good at it. Just like why Indians win spelling Bees, many are from Brahmin families that have memorized and studied literature and texts for hundreds of generations and have gotten very good at it.
It is not a random process. This is how Indian Society was organized for many hundreds of Generations. I am not talking about discriminating against anyone or any group. This system was in order to have good utility of society and harmony between society. The way it is presented in the West is totally wrong and misleading.

Raising money is the key. Introduce yourself to the people you want to be like. Owners are always looking for hungry people. Just don’t procrastinate. Be a go getter. Be competitive. Otherwise you will be judged as a lazy person not worth investing in.

The experience I’ve had with an Indian-owned motel was bad. I booked a motel for a friend online for her and when she showed up and gave them her booking #, they claimed it wasn’t in the system and charged her again. Thinking that it was an error and they’d refund it back or the site would refund it, she went ahead and paid them again. She wanted me to go and help her explain to them she’d been charged twice and soon as we walked in a man greeted with a bad attitude and would barely let us talk and told us to “be quiet” and come back tomorrow and talk to the manager and he was the owner!?! I told him not to talk to us that way, there was no reason for it and as a place of business he shouldn’t have disrespected us like that for no reason. We leave and he goes out the side door and starts yelling at us again and was referring to us as “he’s” and would just talk in circles around the whole issue at hand. Needless to say, we talk to someone else that had stayed there and they had done the same thing to them.

They also save money by hiring people who are not legally allowed to work in their motels (like foreign students who have proper visas, but are not legally allowed to work outside the college campus).

People who are not legally allowed to work in their motels are the best workers. No worrying about call offs, no shows... Americans want a paycheck, fake an injury, and want disability checks, unemployment checks. They don’t work hard because they feel entitled. Just because you went to college doesn’t mean you are a hard working person. I don’t care if you know how to do your homework. I want to know you will answer the bell and keep the customer happy. Anyone can be a millionaire. But most people will be lazy and then hate the hard working people who become millionaires.
