I think this is the first time I've ever seen (or heard) Chris actually bump into something while walking through the LEGO room, which considering how often he does it is VERY impressive.

The biggest issue is that they need at least two ships for a Pirate range. A Pirate ship and one or more of: Navy ship, Merchant ship.

if lego will only do original stuff to tie into TV shows, the best case scenario is if they did a time travel show and used is as an overarching historical theme. The point of Time Cruisers back in the day was to connect all the lego themes together (the comic even predates the physical sets), it would be a modern take on that.
Lego Time pirates..... Time traveling pirates plundering treasure from across time and space.... (Perhaps bring in Metalbeard as a time traveling pirate who is trying to travel back to the classic pirate era, but keeps getting stranded in the wrong era, and setting his sights on a major treasure from that era....)

Give them some kind of time police and you could have a fun mashup of Luppin the Third, one peice and back to the future in lego form...
Eh... I really don't like lego's current storytelling format. It used to be all about creativity but now the full complete story is given on a silver platter via TV show. I would love if they went back to giving just enough story to make the sets actually interesting.
I fear Lego's Over reliance on Licensed themes nowadays. We used to get a fair balance of Licensed and original stuff, but it feels like ever since the Lego movie its been nothing but Licensed stuff. Like the last time we got a full on castle theme, THEME, not set, was nexo knights, the last True space theme was Galaxy squad in 2013, Not to mention Constraction is straight up Dead. After Bionicle G2 failed they didn't even try a new original Constraction theme with CCBS they just let Star wars kill the system and the art of Constraction. Lego hardly experiment anymore.
Lego's gotten complacent and the worst part is, at the moment it works for them. Because no matter how bad disney, marvel and star wars ruin themselves, no matter how overly priced Disney's licensing cost is, People keep buying them. No matter how much bull JK rowlling causes, People still buy harry potter sets. Even technic outside of this year (2024) has been nothing but super cars, Control plus, and pullback motor sets, And it works for them.
I just hope Enough people are buying Dreamzzz to show Lego that People want original themes.
I wish I could buy up every dreamzzz set for this exact reason. But I am just not in a financial situation where I can afford it, or any of the other sets I want (like all the new space stuff). Makes me sad.
My only hope that Star Wars, Marvel, and Harry Potter just catastrophically fail to the point where Lego can no longer lean on them. Marvel and Star wars are headed that way. I dont feel bad hoping for this as we already have the best of Star Wars and Marvel in terms of film and media, so its not like we’d be missing out on anything. Back to basics. Back to just Lego themselves. Back to an original toy company. Not a merchandise factory.

Recipe for Pirates is simple, SHIPS, SHIPS. SHIPS and more SHIPS...!
And some islands with good places to hide their treasure, and someplace to dock their ship for repairs.... And perhaps try experimenting with what the actual treasure is....
Having more than one ship per Pirates series would be nice.
You can have multiple sizes, belonging different factions, and maybe even have extra parts to switch factions.
Imagine having a truly enormous Galion full of precious cargo(possible double meaning if the parts used to represent said cargo are also rare prices) for your pirate sloops to plunder.

What made the original pirate sets so much more attractive to customers was the parts that could be used in castle and city builds. Most of those became much more widespread in other themes in the following 25 years and the few that haven't seen so much use or were still high prices 2nd hand (e.g one piece castle walls and rope bridges) were absent from the 2015 sets. Even as a kid I bought Pirates sets though I was more interested in city or space, as the animals and greenery were only really available that way - city was all police/fire trucks, racing cars and helicopters at the time.
The price range for these are great we need more kid friendly price sets. Most lines only get 1 or sets under $20
I know Lego doesn't do war, but my favorite sets were the ones with the historical factions like the Union, Spaniards, and the Red Coats
They don't do war....unless it's for $$$. Like Indiana Jones and the military vehicle to the literal star WARS😂.
Im losing my mind, I was about to say "How did 2009 Pirates do so poorly? POTC must've been that good!" but then I realized I confused 2009 Pirates with 2015 Pirates, which I don't even remember?? I guess the other themes like LOTR/Hobbit and The Lego Movie were so good that I didnt even notice that there was a whole other pirates theme.
These sets do seem kinda nice, but this is a massive downgrade compared to Pirates 2009 and POTC.
Yepp, the fact that so many people didn't even realize this came out really shows how little of an impact the theme had.
It looks like LEGO was trying to swim on the wave of the Pirates movies WITHOUT having to pay them money.
Pirates is a generic term.
i really liked the skull island and small imperial sets. Liked that you could clip them together. The soldier's fort was underwelming. Ship was pretty darn nice. IMO it just needed a nother ship and a beffed up fort. thought? am i nuts?
I think the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise lego sets killed the original Pirates theme
I got back into Lego Pirates last year with the Lego Creator Pirate Ship and also getting the Scary Pirate Island GWP. Also hunted down a bunch of pirate CMF figures and got the the Metal Beard Polybag set and now he is the captain of the Creator Ship.
I bought all of these when they came out. I had no idea that they were a failure

I feel like Lego could get some use some of the moulds from the failed Vidiyo theme to do a sort of cursed pirates line, like in PoTC, where the pirates are transformed into half-sharks, half-squids and looking for a way to break the curse by searching for macguffins.
Throw in the squid head and I’d actually buy that
I bought all of the Pirate sets when they were new, and thought they were fantastic - still do. Basic, but fun AND affordable, which is what I think many people miss. They weren't meant for adults looking for clever or complex builds. They were build for Kids to put together and play with.
It’s probably a generational thing. I’m from 1978 and this pirate revival happened during my dark ages. Seeing it now makes me want it badly, while I couldn’t care less about nexxo knights, bionics etc.
i always thought pirates failure had more to do with kids these days not being interested in historical themes, because they're more into flashy anime/video game inspired things

I changed up my chess set, I used the skulls as the rook, and put in mermaids for the knights on the pirate side, and gave the imperials actual horses for the knights.
as someone who got the sets when they originally came out, I'll say I really loved them but at the same time those were my first and only pirate sets at the time, I still love these ones and I've also kept adding to my pirate collection since then.
They did the same thing with Castle 2013. It was kind of a repetition of Castle 2007 and 2010. They keep repeating and try to play safe.
Ok, so I love/hate your basement. I love seeing all the Lego! But I'm a tall guy, so walking through there would give me so much anxiety about knocking something over.

I think they would've done better if both pirate bases and both imperial bases were merged instead of having 2 each it'd be 1 each.
To be honest, a lot of the problems are valid for other Lego Pirates themes as well: It very quickly began repeating itself. 1991 gave us the first addons: a second (tiny) raft and three additional islands with especially the pirate island being "the same on more pieces". The sets in 1992/93 were "same idea, but _clearly_ done better", like a larger imperial harbor, a pirate ship with steering or a raft with cloth sail. And as a fresh idea a small pirate ship - a few of the smaller sets however are boring remakes. 1994 had the islanders, that was really a fresh idea. But since 1995 I've barely seen 5 sets that have a fully new concept.

Nice summary of the wave. I would agree with most what you said but I think you are looking from wrong perspective. You look at it as AFOL and ultimate collector. Lego has always been a toy company (even now, when they've been investing more and more into 18+) and considering LEGO's model to discontinue sets after a year or two, there is nothing wrong to release similar generic sets for new generations. From kids perspective, every 5-10 years the base of customers resets. If i was a father of a 5YO today, i'd rarher see new sets on shelves instead of going to BL to buy 20 or 30 years old sets. The same happens with City - bread and butter (police, firemen, hospital) are available all the time, with some twists from time to time (new subthemes).
Maybe kids are not interested in Pirates or Castle anymore and we need to accept it and let LEGO release 18+ sets for us, boomers ;)
Ngl this is the theme that got me into Lego pirates when I was a kid. Many fond memories
I don't see the wave itself being the cause for the *end* of LEGO Pirates as the same era of LEGO saw the *end* of Castle (2013) and Space (Galaxy Squad, also 2013). My belief is that ideas for complete waves of these themes have simply been exhausted after literal decades of sets. Even here the biggest 'complaint' was unoriginality. There are only so many pirate ships, castles and spaceships LEGO can design, especially now that fans can take to social media and gripe that it's all been done before. The better option for LEGO is to produce elaborate one-off sets as throwbacks to these themes every couple of years, especially considering that LEGO releases operate differently than they used to in the 2010s and earlier.
Well sure, if you're always sticking with the same design for the ships with no variation in mast count, ship size, figure heads, ship color/theme, sale arrangement, hull shape, ship armaments and cargo.... Maybe change up the factions so it's not always just "Pirates vs. Imperials/armada" Every faction has at least one main ship and some form of unique cargo for the rival pirates to raid.... (Something cool and fun if not a bit funny, Chickens, bananas, a gemstone McGuffin, the usual gold bars and gems, the return of the chrome gold coins, pearl gold cups, a sacred spear made of that purple crystal stuff from the new lego space sets, bottles of rum....)
The Imperials rather than being the enemies of the pirate factions(I'd have more than one pirate faction and make the primary conflict be between the main pirate faction and this seasons rival pirate faction) are instead just the peacekeepers of the neutral town where all of the pirate factions dock their ships to trade their goods and unwind.... Have the "Imperial" sets basically be any interesting buildings that one would find in your typical port town.... (Lighthouse, Inn, Jail, Blacksmith, Dry Dock, a warehouse, and fish market...
Sprinkle in small sets that include rafts, rowboats, brick built sea monsters, Islands with cool secrets and or traps and general hazards like snakes, spiders, scorpions, exotic predators like jaguars or pumas, monkeys, sharks, crocodiles, lava, falling rocks ect....
I thought Pirates of the Caribbean killed pirates just like Lord of the Rings killed castle

Thats the problem with kids today, they cant make the story up themselves in their head, they need to be told what it is or copy the movie.

Lego should invest into a Lego pirates show like they do ninjago. Pirates is still a popular theme and there is an audience and consumer for it. If they leaned more into the fantasy and mythological side of pirate lore it would sell especially if they released themed ships sort of like the flying Dutchman but themed around curses like a ship and crew with a freezing curse so their part ice and the ship is always frozen over or a ghost ship made of transparent pieces in certain sections showing the ships interior. Pirate hunters have never been done and even the imperials could get an upgrade with a galleon that would make the imperial flagship jealous. Pirates is a theme that still has so much that hasn't been done yet.
Heck without getting supernatural you could still get all kinds of creative by varying up the ships and crews with their captains having their own preferred "treasure" that they hoard.... Like one captain hoards cats and has a ship that reflects her love of cats, Maybe another is crewed by monkeys and hoards bananas, then you got your classic pirates who like gold and jewels, one that's interested in magic so they hoard spell books and magical weapons/artifacts....
@@minnion2871 exactly having themed pirate crews could be fun and creative and most importantly good for waves. Ninjago does this with its seasons same with monkey kid pirates can do the same except instead of mechs or dragons we get ships and mythical creatures or modular island sets that can combine with each wave creating unique island structures.

Pirates coming back is about as likely as bloodborne getting a PC port.

i agree on your point the sets being very VERY basic. However, i dont think a lack of individual characters and lack of story lore does count. Since my complaint with many sets is that we get playsets to replay a certain story with fixed characters and overcomplicated builds that consist of way too many tiny pieces. Which on the one hand gives much more detail and makes it easier to immerse and start playing, on the other hand it numbs the ability to invent characters and stories by oneself. And especially for pirates, it is easy to just make a story up as you go. "We have a ship, we have a crew, we search for treasure ..." do i really need a Captain Jack Sparrow for that? Or a Captain Redbeard? Do i need to know if the pirates or the imperials are the baddies? Isn't it part of the idea of playing to figure that there is more to every side than plain good and evil? Isnt it much more fun to discover the motives of Imperials and Pirates alike and figure that both are good and bad at the same time ... like that's the whole point in playing stories with minifigures, isnt it? ^^ and with that in mind, i'd say the 2015 pirates was a nice start for a new pirates theme with a little bit of everything you need for some adventures in the pirate world. A bit more of everything would have been nice though ^^ not necessarily "gardens of ninjago city"-sized or detailed sets, but a proper base for both factions, and imperial ship and some bits of djungle and treasure island would have been nice follow ups... also i would have loved to see an Islanders revival but i guess that is a very difficult theme if you want to avoid a shit storm nowadays ... xP
I'd love to see them make a Spanish treasure galleon full of gold and silver from the New World that the pirates could try to capture
I Used To Own The Brick Bounty Set Back In 2015
We have all those sets. My, at the time, 5 year old son loved them.

As far as the Pirates collection of 2015, comparing it to the Creator 3 in 1 set, the 3 models included in the set are far better than what the 2015 line offered. Even the ship is far better than classic pirate ships (with a few exceptions). And with the Eldorado set.......I couldn't be happier.
I hope for now to get an imperial ship, even fully brick build will be fine. The 3in1 pirate ship offers tremendous value for MOC builders since it is fully brick build!
I think this series didn’t do well because of several factors coming together: like he mentions, a low budget and/or low confidence given to development team, the absence of unique pieces (large ship hulls or castle panels), and this is about the time that I remember LEGO prices started drastically increasing.

I was obsessed with Lego Pirates when it first came out in 1989, but I had to watch my favorite theme deteriorate in quality after only a few years. This more or less coincided with the my getting out of the hobby entirely. I'm back now, but any Lego Pirates, other than classic, still gives me bad vibes.

This was yet another amazing video. I always love it when you go over these iconic LEGO themes because it’s always interesting to see. Great job as always Chris and I can’t wait to see what you do next.
P.s. I love how at certain point in the video (like the opening) you can faintly hear the soundtrack from the live action adaptation of One Piece…which is amazing.

I enjoyed the wave as a history nerd, it helped me expand on my French army, also I can find the shipwreck defence set for $45 sealed.
LEGO definitely had an issue of oversimplifying their original themes during this era. What happened to this theme and LEGO’s approach to it are very similar to BIONICLE G2.

Pirates of the Caribbean
Why you paid these prices is beyond me. Currently checking BL; and there are multiple copies of the smallest one in the US for around 40 USD. Same goes for the other sets
Maybe Lego will do a licensed Pirates of the Carribean theme when the new Pirates of the Carribiean reboot is released.

This vid was just an excuse to show off an INSANE lego collection and the fact you spend WAY too much time in your underground Lego Lair that you can walk backwards through that convoluted space without bumping into anything.
I am no longer a Lego fan because I got burned by them I do like the bricks, but nothing I see here I don't hate it I just would not buy them for the most part the sets are to small even the ship and there look to much like a kid toy! The chess set is a mess the rooks don't make sense on the pirates side if Lego was making a kids chess set (a toy) I guess OK, but nothing here is for me, but than again Lego don't listen to us that much I get!
I hope we get new pirates but at least better than 2015 one getting shark pirates figs and sea monsters for pirates to fight would go hard we need for original themes

Kind've with every theme older sets are always better. Pirates 2 was a good series, and Pirates 1 just copied it and failed to make it better. It was like a downgrade with a more juniorized feel.

I don’t understand why they did so poorly me and my brother got a lot of them. The remake of the ship was a bit disappointing because it was about the same as the 2009 one but with a more basic shark but other than that I liked them all.
I do like these, even if they were a little bland and basic. I just miss plain Lego Pirates. Maybe if these sets came combined, they'd be better. But the theme I really want a revival of is Western, even though it won't happen.

No, as a fan of classic pirate books I don't want fantasy elements with it. Otherwise I agree that Lego didn't put much effort into this. But on the other hand times have changed, maybe Lego doesn't want a theme any more for kids that ins not gender equal and woke. So they keep it in ideas for adults only who buy it out of nostalgia.
Back in the day we didn't need licenses or pre-scripted story lines! We were able to give the characters names ourselves and invent OUR OWN stories with them!
Exactly! The sets needed to be more complex, not more story. Just gives us better pirate sets. Like a Spanish treasure galleon or a huge pirate port in Port Royal or Tortuga.
Of course its not gonna succeed when you dont put effort into it, Lego. I believe they just wanted to kill the franchise on purpose.
That theme was terrible. Pirates from the 90s were new and the sets were well thought out and well put together. This new team was just bare bones. Nothing stood out.

I just bought a big collection for really cheap and one of the things I found in it was the Lego Black Pearl Pirates of the Caribbean set. I dunno if all the pieces are there but I seen the huge hull pieces and several sails/All the minifigs. Davy Jones worth $100 on his own!!!

I want return of pirates with indigo Islanders and imperial armada (the 2nd red army) with huge island with caves and traps and secrets with fully closed 4 walls like eldarado fortress or lion castle, with erupting volcano with lava and skeleton inside, and so on,, actually I wants 4 parts or same huge island each occupied by fraction, lkle blue and red armada , pirates and indigo Islanders and so they can be combined into one very huge island sizes like 4 barracuda bay ships together and of course with NO STICKERS. Pease give Lego this idea 💡
