In 2017 I participated in an event called "Let There Be Drums" in St. Paul, Minnesota, in which we attempted to set the world record for the most drummers playing in one place at one time. About 250 of us showed up at a bandstand with our drum kits. We'd all learned beforehand how to play "Rocksteady" by Aretha Franklin, Ringo's famous drum break from "The End" of Abbey Road, and most of us who didn't already know it tried to learn the Purdie Shuffle. At the event a band took to the stage (which included several respected industry drummers whose names I've since forgotten), plus Mister Bernard Purdie himself, and 250 of us drummers all played in unison. When it came time to do the Purdie Shuffle, Bernard basically walked us through how to do it, exactly like he does in this video, and after a couple of minutes all of us were doing the Purdie Shuffle in unison. Afterwards, he signed my LP copy of "Aja." I'll never forget it.
He invented it, and he’s still like a kid with his new toy. No end to musical pleasure, remember this when you are down. There is always a gift of up. Thanks, pretty.
I will never forget, back in the 80's, getting on the 79th St. crosstown bus in New York City, and a gentleman sitting to my had a pair of drumsticks on his lap. I asked him if he was a professional drummer (I a life-long good amateur.) He said yes. I asked him his name. He said, "Bernard Purdy." I smiled the biggest smile and told him how much I loved his high hat break from the days of Eddie Harris and Les McCann. We chuckled together.
I don't know anything about playing drums, but I get the sense that he is seeing every beat in his head long before he plays it. This isn't just repetition, this is mastery to the point of simply being the beat.
It's impossible not to feel Bernard's pure love of groove, and life! I love this man - he has my eternal gratitude not only for sharing his masterful chops with us mere mortals, but also for sharing his high-flyin' spirit.
I came late to the Purdie shuffle as I always struggled with the accent into the immediate ghost, so I made a similar shuffle that never felt half as groovy. Getting into Steely Dan later in life I heard Home At Last and vowed to learn it, damn its so good! Now I just spend hours sitting in the shuffle when I should be practising stuff for the next show......
OW! Now! The big big big big big big question: The triplet. We all know about the triplet. We know that the triplet represents 12:4m We ALSO KNOW that it represents 12:8. Nothing greater than the master himself showing us how to play and as a drummer. I play/practice this over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and while you get the point.
I generally have no clue whats going on when he starts talking about timing and such, but it's just fun to watch someone doing something they have a passion for like this. Makes me want to try a new instrument or something
Not my comment, but someone’s from another version of this lesson that I think is not on UA-cam anymore “Came for the Purdie shuffle, stayed for the Purdie chuckle”-Someone great
that's it sir! Now you've gone and done it! 45 years into my drumming career and I'm finally going to get off my ass and master this! It will be my crowning achievement ha ha ha ha ha cheers!
Bernard explains it so well. He makes it all look so simple and smooth, which we all no it isn't. I keep coming back to this video because there's so much to learn here about putting so much feel, groove and movement into a piece of music. Thanks Bernard for taking time out to put these lessons together.
To anyone struggling to learn this beat, maybe try what I did: think of your snare hand as a second hand on your high hats, then find the right spot on your snare and just tap it lightly until it sounds as much like a high hat as possible. Imagine you're playing the high hat with two hands.
It took me a week or two of bashing my head into a wall. Once you find and actually feel the rhythm, you still have the ghost notes to refine. Just keep at it, and if you get frustrated, stop - can’t force these dynamics.
In case you're having trouble wrapping your mind around it, imagine that you're playing a triplet on the hi-hat, only the second note of the triplet is tapped on the snare in the form of a ghost note. Once you have that down, add the first couplet of the bass drum on the one and two of the triplet. From there it's all downhill.

Thanks for contributing. I’m sure there’s some death metal guy doing 900 fills per verse you can find on UA-cam somewheres.
Bernard was born with a metronome inside him, I swear. When you have a shuffle beat named after you, you know you’ve goddamn well made it!
They use Bernard to calibrate metronomes 🙂
