There was a man named Don Ritchie who was called "The Angel of the Gap", he lived near the Gap and he'd regularly talk people down from suicide attempts.
He was credited with saving 160 people who were about to commit suicide at the Gap. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia for these actions.
Unfortunately, Don died in 2012, the year before Renea took her life.

I'm brazillian and I've never heard the details of this particular story, so kudos for the great coverage!
these exploitative and shocking crime shows are really a thing people watch while eating lunch
It's unthinkable consuming this much graphic content this casually even as a fan of the dark, strange and mysterious... the way they hound grieving families and accuse the freshly dead people of crimes and gang involvement just for shock value... it's a big big problem
It always has this very conservative, punitive and fearmongering tone to all of them, and the worst part is that wallace souza is not the only fearmongering tv host turned politician
A neighbouring city just elected one of them as a mayor.... living in Brazil it's a nightmare sometimes

I went through a similar story when I was about 19 years old. But thankfully at some point, cat-fish felt bad about playing around with me and tried to disappear and at that point it hit me and I understood exactly who was behind this mess. I confronted the person and got my confirmation. It was someone I knew and considered to be a friendly contact. The charade went on for at least 6-7 months.
I was furious and devastated at the same time. It took me a while to recover, but I did. And only now, hearing this story I realize how lucky I was that the author of the fake person started listening to their conscience and let themselves be found out.
A couple of years later I met with them and was able to forgive them. Now I'm glad that I did as this obviously could end up much much worse for me. Especially since I was very lonely at that time in my life.

He couldn't leave his country so I had to work on going to him but I had no job due to illness. He was from Venezuela and was a in the US on asylum waiting on citizenship. But when you're insecure you will take any "love" you can get. Even one's that are toxic and impossible. He tried to break up with me several times. The first because I was ill, second because I didn't want to do certain intimate things with him and the third time I broke up with after he started hating on my family and insulted me for my religion and then jut iced me out. That's two major pillars of social support: gone. I theorize that she discovered the horrendous truth, and that's why she jumped. Despite knowing that Brayden was fake, she nevertheless mourned that relationship, so she still sent his number a text to say goodbye regardless. That pour Camilla was unnecessarily cruel in her breakup texts out of vengeful spite. Either way, an horrific tragedy, and my heart goes out to her family ❤

I live in Sydney Australia and I remember Renee’s suicide but didn’t know the back story. THE GAP has always been a popular suicide spot for decades - In fact I lost a friend five years ago who had jumped from the Gap one night suffering from debilitating depression. We went to The Gap to pay our last respects as his friends and I cannot begin to explain what a horrifying place it was at night and just so treacherous looking jagged rocks and the crashing waves of the sea that would just take a human body away to oblivion. To think of the sheer unutterable pain and anguish people like my friend and Renee and dozens of other tortured souls must have felt looking down to what to me resembled Hell itself, to take that final step into the darkness makes me weep with unbearable distress. Thank you Mr Ballen for bringing Renee’s tragic story to Global light.
RIP Renee, my Friend and all those other tender and broken souls, I know you are all in a better, kinder and more gentle place.

I had a girl which was born the same day as me which is yesterday April 6 and we spent our birthdays together from when we met back in 98, but from 2007 I don't really like my birthdays because in summer of 06 she jumped, not from such a horrific place but she died, I knew she had depression I tried the best I can but at some point I realized that no matter how much I love her I just can't help her because I don't know how. I didn't believe that she's able to do it, she didn't beloved how much it will hurt me, she fought that I would eventually forget about her in a year or two but I knew that it won't be a case and that it would hurt me to the end of my life or at least 20 years and whenever I see something like this I just wonder why, because no matter how something is hurting you there is somebody who loves you and when you decide to cut your pain by killing yourself that pain don't disappear it goes to those who loved you and become their pain. Of there is only one person who love you your life is worth of living but people should stop be selfish. If I didn't realized that I would be dead for at least 15 years. Way too many young people kill themselves because in some particular moments they think the world would be better without them while in fact the world is just too harsh place for their gentle souls.😔

Makes absolutely no sense for Camila to be offended by that description.

Then hears where this person gets arrested and is convicted of a crime for 2 years, THEN sets up early plans to get married to the person who she AGAIN has not dated or met this person ever.
She was delusional, as far as i'm concerned, the story didn't even talk about her status as an individual, did she finish high school? did she go to college? did she have a job? if so what kind of job did she have? i was getting the vibe that she could either be a high school dropout (or maybe not) but stayed at home with her mom, no interest in furthering her education or have a job. She chose to shut her mom out, lied and told her everything was OK, then went and killed herself. If a drowning person refuses to grab a life preserver thrown at them and dies, the problem isn't really the person who pushed them into the water. The problem is that they refused to accept the help from people trying to save their life. And the solution is to identify these people and counsel them so that they *will* seek and accept help when they find themselves in trouble.

I still get the occasional nightmare/flashback and since the pandemic began although I'm an social-restrained introvert, To this day looking back at my rather dark and lonesome childhood, I have an excessively difficult time starting friendships, building them let alone keeping faith of trust in a friendship with another mostly due to her and because I was constantly bullied throughout my elementary years as a kid. So please listen to your gut and inner voice because if you don't you could end up potentially antisocial and isolated like me or worst...
To this day even as an adult, I don't actually trust me coworkers, boss or anyone, online or in real life anyway please STAY SAFE and remember TRUST YOUR ANIMALISTIC INSTINCTS... PLEASE!!!!

unfortunately it isn't illegal in the US unless tangible it's used to defraud the other person for "tangible" items. money, jewelry, etc.those "things" can all be replaced and are bad. but we all know that the human psyche is not something that can easily be repaired if ever. and just bc you can't put your hands on it, touch it, feel it, or even see it, doesn't mean it doesn't have a value. And that is what also confuses me. because in the US when we sue someone, we are also allowed to sue for mental anguish and any subsequent medical care ( pschiatric/psychological) that may be required. and are often reqarded large sums of money for it. so the law actually recognizes it that it has a monetary value. so why wouldn't it have a value when it comes to catfishing?

Renee’s story breaks my heart. I live in Sydney and around 10 years ago, I was at The Gap too with the same intention. I also texted my mum and best friends apologies and goodbyes, without telling them where I was. My mum immediately called police who traced my phone location and arrived SO fast, before I’d climbed over the railing. The Gap is a notorious suicide spot here, and there are cameras all along it for that reason, as well as suicide prevention signs and even a post with a button connecting to emergency services that urges anyone contemplating jumping to press it for help. I’m sure they already noticed me before my mum called them.. I was loitering a while deciding on the right spot to jump from.. being scared but also so deeply depressed I felt it I had to do it to end the pain. Plus there were lots of people around for the beautiful view, and I didn't want them traumatised by seeing someone die.
If only the cops could’ve done the same with her phone and stopped Renee.
There’s a story of a man living nearby who would watch the cliff from his house and go to speak to anyone he thought looked like they planned to jump. He saved a good number of people.. you can google it. Not sure if he’s still alive as I think he was an elderly gent.

Been binging this channel for a week straight now and so far I’ve seen about 4-5 episodes on the show Cold Case Files as well… but listening to Mr Ballin tell the events with such detail as he does, it’s not only like hearing about it for the first time but also SO much better.
I love this channel. Btw Mr Ballin, I’m autistic so if I find something I like to watch I will re watch it over and over again and I’ve already watched the pacific crest trail episode like 4 times lol (by far my favorite one! It needs to be a movie, but Mr Ballin needs to be the director and narrator)

  • @derrickbonsell

There were a few details left out of the third story that give some interesting context. Renae had previously attempted suicide via overdosing on pills but recovered. Camilla was verbally abusive to Renae on numerous occasions, with "Brayden" at one point suggesting that Renae have sex with Camilla. Renae refused. The other detail that really intrigues me is that she had entered into a relationship with a man she worked with named Ian. At some point they got engaged even. Ian realized she was "with Brayden" and told Renae that she needed to choose which man she was going to marry. She chose "Brayden."
I think these details should have been included since not everyone is going to read the attached articles and they seem pretty important to the story. Renae's tragic suicide didn't just come out of nowhere, it was telegrammed much in advance.
