As an Atheist who appreciates Gospel/ religious music I listened to this performance with a mix of curiosity and frustration. To begin with, this is such a tame and bloodless rendition of a standard of the Christian church (in America, at least) that the audience and the judges reactions were puzzling and remarkably misleading: This slow, sleep inducing rendition was the product of a person who, lacking singing skill, dragged it out to mask it's irrelevance. If that song is ever again presented on a mainstream stage, a rare event these days, I would hope that the singer sings it until the audience is jumping out of it's seats and committing to Christ right there in the isles. That's right, I said it. So, I'm a hypocrite, right? How can I claim Atheism and then call for a more powerful and more meaningful performance of a religious song? Because the greatest contagion working its way through society these days is the contagion of mediocrity. If a particular ideology can't offer me a version of reality that moves or enlivens me on some level it has failed, not just itself but me as well. Within the whole of society there are groups who, no matter their excesses or fictions concerning the nature of reality are, if not proofs of their legitimacy, at least breathing examples of the power of the individual and the need for diversity. Clearly, a pablum rendition of a stirring hymn does nobody a service and only serves as evidence for the eventual collapse of modern, socially-constructed modes of living. Progress is not simply offering you and I something different, it's giving us the tools to advance, move forward..to progress and trust me, this forgettable version of a beautiful and stirring song is not progress, it is commercialism and narcissism on full display and it is also an example of the manufactured reality that is being fed to us daily by greedy and self-serving corporations who don't want us to be individuals or Christians or poets or warriors or Rednecks or Jews or entertainers but want us, instead, to be boring consumers with no sense of pride or loyalty or hope. Without knowing it, the judges and the audience were just a bunch of performers in a commercial for Boredom and the loss of value...
You want God to prove himself to you? Pray for Him to show you His truth. What's the worst that could happen? You become a believer in His truth? If you ask you shall recieve.

Besides, many of the victims of the Spanish Inquisition were believers and we know what happened to them...don't we?
