Chiang Mai, here most people don't like to live in tall buildings. Therefore, it is a city that expands horizontally rather than vertically. Chiang Mai is not an industrial city but it is a city suitable for living, relaxing, and traveling. If you want a simple life this is heaven for you.
Not specifically that they don't like it. It's because the city is surrounded by mountains, it'd be bad to block the view. They also have airport, air force bases, many high and important observatories, government regulations.
Since Chiang Mai has a large land area and a small population, the population density is lower than that of Bangkok, Chonburi, and Hat Yai. Land prices are still low, so there is no need to build high-rise buildings. It's not a matter of preference; it's simply economics. If investors find that building high-rise buildings is more cost-effective than building horizontally, they will choose to build high-rise buildings instead.
Chiangmai shouldn't be like Bangkok. I lived in Chiangmai 20 years ago (for 5 years) and it was an amazing place. Convenient enough and not too much crowded to maintain its own unique atmosphere. The more Chiangmai chases after Bangkok, the more it looses its charisma. Imo, if Bangkok aim for being like Tokyo, then Chiangmai should be like Kyoto or some city that focus on preserving the uniqueness way of living. They should have their own way of development.

Well. Thailand's religion is a mix of spiritual-hinduism-buddhism but we just call it Buddhism. I personally call it the Thai Religion. The Core and the shell look Buddhism. And the main principle of Buddhism is that it doesn't try to explain things in a fixed way, rather, tells people to believe based on scientific evidence. To see, To hear, To study, and to learn, by oneself. The principle is to not "Believe" nor "worship" but to "experiment", I think they have this written down verbatim somewhere, when Siddhartha tells the followers to not believe him immediately but go study it and learn it, and later on his end, tell people to not worship his statue or likeness. Thai do heavily believe in Karma, and do not waste time on solving past things like "Where we come from" or "How Earth came to be"by themselves, but when asked, they will give you a scientific answer if they learn of it, or state that they do not know the answer if they didn't learn about it. They believe in what science books say. Because Buddhism's roots are actually quite experimentally reliant. Such as "Try to meditate. If it works, keep going, If not let's do something else, like praying or studying scripts, etc." I am an Atheist, I was raised a Buddhist, but when I started studying other religions, it contradicted a lot of the sciences, one claiming A, another claiming B. Science is just science where they present evidence or theories that have calculations that sounded, the fact that it is a hold theory, is because we don't have a contradicts calculation or observable evidences so far ( Bible books is not valid evidence, because we would also have to enter Harry Potter and other fictions books as evidence of the same level). And when I give up religion altogether, I find that Buddhism actually doesn't try to overide any of the Facts. They only teach people what is a good way to live to not simply just "believe" but ask questions and learn. Basically a bit complicated, old, self-help book and not a history/novel book like other religions.
