What you will never ever ever need ever again:
A Shovel: amzn.to/2K6BHh9
A Bag of Salt: amzn.to/2JXDDsd
For your driveway you need a thermal break between your slab and the earth. We used zip ties to tie down the tubes so they wouldn't rise when the concrete was poured. Each loop is one continuos length. No couplings or joints in the cement. The tubing is pressurized to make sure there are no leaks. Soon I will get a boiler system and I will update on Instagram @jeffwybo so be sure to follow me there.

It's finally here. Heated Driveway Installation Part 2: ua-cam.com/video/v-KBJwdMZB8/v-deo.html
I was wondering if the pex lines were ran through a section of the forced heat duct work & cycled back?
Furnace to heat the house. But the boiler was a combi boiler so did the driveway and the potable water.
This is epic! I need to see an update video and a time lapse of a massive snow day and your neighbors shoveling while you bring out a beach lawnchair this winter
Meet Kevin I’ll be out there with my coffee waving. Or maybe I’ll be nice and brew coffee for all of them ... :) since I have all that free time now.
I think we all need to see this update video! As someone who cleared snow for a living, I love the idea of heated driveways
Indeed! A snow-storm time-lapse would be the best way to summarize the value of this project.
I would enjoy pretending I’m in the sun with my winter coat on! Why do you enjoy this content?
Personally I like shoveling, I like the exercise. I own a snowblower but I rarely use it except on REALLY heavy snowfalls. In fact I'm also someone who clears snow for a living, lol.
Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of heated driveways, that's why I'm viewing this. I've offered to pay to put in a heated driveway for my father who is 85 years old, but he does not want to be bothered with it. Plus he says scraping small snowfalls gives him something to do. (I come over and clear the heavy snowfalls for him.)
I was thinking to myself "I wonder where he lives to get enough snow to need a heated driveway". Then he said "about". 😁
lol nailed it.

Hey thank you so much 🙏🙏
Heated driveway? The hell you need a heated driveway for? I'd kill to have a driveway that short and gentle sloping. I'm the one who needs a heated driveway. Try a tenth of a mile long going up at 45 degrees in the winter in Pennsylvania. We got two inches of pretty much solid ice and we can barely get half way up. Thankfully we have an even spot from when we lived further down the hill where we can park cars that can't make it up (not my choice as I didn't have one, being like 11 at the time). Being poor sucks lol

Thanks for the video and sharing costs in a comment reply. Was there a particular reason to go back and forth across the short of the driveway vs going from the garage door to the street to have less curved bends/ends?
It was the best way for allowable lengths of tubing to cover the area. I'm going to be doing a follow up video hopefully with the next snow fall in my area. Thanks so much for watching!!!!
You definitely have an eye for things!

Curious to know the answer to the same questions. Also, how long the process took.
Live in KY with a lot of freeze/thaw issues. I'd really like to do this bc salt just eat the crap out of concrete, yet concerned that with the above issue it won't last.
What are your thoughts & how's your system doing now?
Thanks
2 questions, why didn't you rent or borrow a pex unwinder? more important i see a little pitch on your driveway and a little more pitch on the street, now the question is we just got 12" of snow and it's 10deg. outside and your snowmelt comes on, where does all the water go ?
I’m thinking the water run off would go down the appropriate water sewer drainage. This is an assumption now if you can’t tell I have no idea lol
This is super helpful!

Hey that’s amazing!!!! Thank you for coming over and checking it out ! :)
If you are going to do this often get a flat cart to carry the roll and have a rotisserie to feed the tubing out. This will keep the tubing straight and it won't tangle.
Great tip !!!
We do the same but with wire for our machines
Loved watching this group of guys come together to git-r-done!
The fact that there still isn't a followup video makes me think it may have been a fail! I hope not.
Hydronic heating is a damn science and when people try to DIY it, they are almost ALWAYS disappointed with the results. Don't ask me how I know...
Those are some really tight bends in the pex. I'd be afraid of kinking. But the 6" spacing makes for some great coverage.
Also, the guy with the saw was making me nervous. I insisted on my contractor using hand seams only - to avoid cutting any of the lines.
Did you keep the manifolds mounted to the outside wall like that? Out in the weather? Or was that just temporary for pressurizing the system during the pour?
Also, what zone are you in? Did you use Glycol to keep from freezing?
PLEASE do a follow-up video with more details and with footage of this driveway in action! We need to see more!
Thank you for posting!
1. Any reason why rebar chairs weren't used to raise the steel mesh reinforcing sufficiently off the ground?
2. How deep is the tubing from the top of the concrete slab?
New video is up on the channel with the boiler installed!
But does it cashflow?
Yes. While I watch everyone else shovel snow I get to sell real estate and make content. Think bigger.
@@JeffWybo you got me there. Interested to see what it's like during the winter
Cashflow is one of the important reasons why I got my 1st property but sometimes you pay for convenience & sometimes you get paid to provide the same!
Forget a shovel, the snow stays melting!!
Also I’m assuming that it would cash flow because that’s one of the end goals when striving towards early retirement and financial freedom
Can you share some details of the boiler and circ pump sizes? I've got mine in but haven't picked the heating hardware yet.

What’s the installation cost and what’s the electric cost to run in the winter?
Not much electricity... mostly gas. Keep you posted. New video up on the channel
Just got the boiler installed !
Love these new construction homes in London.
Thanks bro !!
Hello Jeff. How about an update now 4 years later. How's it working. I just learned about these things and after reading and watching other installs I see yours is different in that you used ONE circuit or tubing to run the solution to the driveway. All the others broke up the single loop into multiple shorter loops. A similar driveway to yours in one other install they divided it into five loops. The goal - to evenly distribute the heat and not have it all in the beginning of the loop. Wondering your results
Hey so I’ve sold the property! However the neighbour told me today that it’s still working. Lol. Now I didn’t have just one loop each loop went out a certain distance and back to the manifold. I have a bit of a series on here where I show more of the install maybe check out the other vids? The epic fail one is just me saying that no residential plumbers wanted to tackle this project so it took me forever to find the right contractors to do the job.
What kind of insulation did you use for the bottom? That black on one side gray on the other tarp thing? What is that?
It was a tarp that had an R rating. It is a cheaper option than using the foam. Lots of people comment that I should of used the foam but it still works and I saved thousands.
@@JeffWybo thanks
I like the thinking but wonder if it's going to crumble within 3-years.
Hmm I wouldn’t think so. Time will tell.
Is there a way to do this after after concrete has been poured or does the old concrete have to be removed to get one of these systems in?
None that I know of with a boiler system.
@@JeffWybo thanks for the reply.
No problem! I think there is some electric way but I think it’s still before concrete is poured. I lucked out and told the builder not to pour before I put this down.
Is this in a milder climate? It would seem like the water would be cold and useless a quarter of a way through the driveway with just one circuit. It would seem like to set up would require a lot more energy to heat the water.
It’s not just water it’s glycol. Southwestern Ontario so it gets a bunch of snow. Works perfect.
What is the ROI on making this upgrade? How much does it cost and how much equity would it put into the property?
The ROI is not having to shovel. It costs around 5-7K. The equity into the property is whatever i can market. I'd say at least 15k.
@@JeffWybo you got this under 10k? Wow. How much premium you think I would have to pay to get the builder to do this? If I am buying a new house
You told me twice to thumbs up... if its good content i thumbs up. When people tell me what to do i thumbs down .... ok ok you get a thumbs up just this once....
I love that!! 🙏🙏. Thank you so much !!
Why did you give this video a thumbs up?
I second this notion
Here is the photo how I did it in my garage in 2017:
i.ibb.co/SrXDnVx/IMG-20160705-174050.jpg
There is no need in thousands of zips. And you chose wrong radius curve which leads you to tube bending more then needed on 4:38. I'd choose a little bit thicker tube. Mine was 16mm in diameter, 76 meters long for the 20 m2.
That looks great !!
I agree!!
Is it the same process ?
Am I the only one that is still getting this video on my home page Sep/2021 ?

Diana Martin so it will be a boiler system.... and it will make my natural gas costs go up. The whole system you see has cost about $3500 and I still need to get the boiler. Maybe another $2500.
Did you include concrete costs in that figure Jeff?

Concrete will always crack so this helps to prevent it
@@JeffWybo controlled cracking, if and when it cracks, it will crack at the controlled cracking lines
WARREN CORCORAN merry Christmas Warren. Thanks for the comments and thanks so much for watching !!!!
great question man! I was actually worried that they might cut the water pipes beneath!
Yes what they said. It called a control joint. Prevents shifting and cracking. Especially when the weather changes from hot to cold.
Did you pressure test the pipes and keep them under pressure during the concrete pouring? It really sucks when the concrete guys are stomping all over tubing. If they are under pressure and they burst you know it, immediately. Also, your buddies could have put that pipe down in a quarter of the time with an uncoiler. Great video though.

Being from Canada this is a great invention definitely a time saver. Question: How much does something like this cost versus how much value does it add? I understand that my question does not have time saved but was just curious from a strictly numbers view.
I'm definitely curious too, I've heard of this but have never seen it done or even thought of what the resale value would be. Any luck finding out information Derek?
I asked the same question! I am also wondering the same question.
This, like a pool, adds no value to a property. It does make it more enticing to buyers, making the house sell faster which means less mortgage payment in the meantime. So that does have a value. But don't expect for your houses value to increase due to it.
A guy in Buffalo NY has a heated driveway and he will admit. That when they get feet of snow it doesn't work on that much snow. He has to get out there and snowblow.

@@JeffWybo : this is my first video I’m watching I’ll watch more and I’m gonna see that car 😆 I wanna know what it is.
You got it man it was a Cobra. Thank you so much for watching! I should have a follow up video soon!
Why put in steel wire mesh if the mesh is laying on the ground......you should have saved the money except for using it as spacing for the PEX. The wire MUST be pulled into the "crete" to be effective as reinforcement. We use # 3 bar on 2" chairs (dug in) 18" O.C. with a 6" or better pad. We also use rolling diamond saws with a depth gauge when cutting up heated pads.. Nice job though all things considered.
Appreciate that Dan!!!
I wonder if this would hold up the same in Thunder Bay. We do get more snow, maybe 30-40% more. If theres too much snow, would it just melt to water and go straight through the drainage system on the road? If theres too much could it turn to ice? So curious, make sure to keep us posted on a super snowy day!
Thanks for watching!

I don't wanna dox you but are you from Canada somewhere in Ontario somewhere that has a university that is known for partying ?

I’m about $3500 I think out of pocket and still have a to get the boiler for about another $3500. Going to try to do a numbers video for January once I can get them all
Can we see it in action?
Getting there! Part 2 just hit the channel!
New videos up on the channel !
"You should have":
* Put rigid foam under all the concrete, a radiant blanket doesn't do anything without an air gap.
* Put foam insulation wrap around the PEX where the expansion joints were going to be cut.
* Used PEX-AL-PEX so you don't get a ton of air into your closed system from diffusion.
* Used a de-coiler (a spindle for the PEX coil) - you twisted the heck out of that PEX, probably going to fail!
* Used bigger turn loops, you kinked the heck out of that PEX
* Used a different pattern for the melt - you want the hottest liquid going down the tire tracks first, and it you wrap a supply and return portion next to each other it evens the whole slab temperature (reducing the risk of cracking)
FYI, the calculation for the boiler load is 50W/square-foot (170.6BTU/Hr/sq-ft) or 500W/square-meter (1706BTU/Hr/sq-meter), you can even that out with a thermal buffer tank, and one or more boilers with a high turn-down ratio (so that you can sequence, "stage", and increase your reliability).
Using a thermal buffer tank (looks like a water heater), allows the boiler to not short cycle so much on low load, and hydraulically isolates the loop(s) from the boiler so that you don't condense too much on boiler startup.
You could also try doing a solar water heater even up north - I've seen people who are doing it in Alaska, so it possible up there.
I see so many problems with this institution. 1. You snaked the pex instead of doubling back. This would result in uneven heating. 2. You did not lift the wire mesh off of the vapor barrier/insulation so you are going to be heating the ground more than the slab as the Pex is not in the slab. As a correct install should have mesh 2” in slab. 3. You cut the slab instead of hand grooving concrete. This will pull on the pex as the concrete cracks also since the mesh is not in the slab there will be more cracking.
👍
I would have cut all the tails on zip ties!, as they are gonna create voids all over and weaken the slab!
Yes we cut them! Just never made it to the video! Had to cut the footage!
