They both have the essence of "master of Ansatsuken". Though Gouken is the pure and good side while Akuma is smoking up some satsui no hado and therefore sounds darker and evil.
***** Gouken says "Even Satsui no Hado can be defeated with the right training and technique." which implies Satsui no Hadou is nothing to fear in the end. In his ending, he defeats Ryu, then Akuma challenges Gouken for "Ryu's soul" (to determine which path Ryu will take). In SF3, Ryu is no longer tainted by Satsui no Hadou, meaning Gouken whooped Akuma's ass. Akuma got lucky with that first Raging Demon. Once. But I can see it your way too.
Notice how it's similar to Akuma's theme. The similarity in the two themes denotes their same history, however, Akuma's version gives off a more fiery, destructive, and disciplined feel. Gouken's theme gives off a peaceful, responsible, submissive tone.
George Milenov Actually, what Conrado Javier said is more accurate. I have very limited understanding of the subject in depth, but there are two traditional martial arts philosophies called "Sei" and "Dou." These terms are used to describe what kind of fighter you are or, more specifically, where you draw your strength from as a fighter. "Sei" fighters drew their strength from within themselves, using discipline and self-control to gain control in a fight. "Dou" fighters used power and aggression to overwhelm opponents through force. Gouken and Akuma are actually very similar (at least in regards to the story canon) because they both learned the same fighting style from the same master. It's just that Gouken is a Sei fighter and Akuma is Dou, and they both epitomize these two philosophies. Akuma isn't evil, he just seeks power. He believes gaining strength is accomplished by testing your power against other equal or greater powers and that to ever hold back is to stifle his own growth of power. He kills people, yes, but only people who challenge him directly meaning they knew what they were getting into. Gouken epitomizes Sei in that he has what other SF characters refer to in-canon as "the Power of Nothingness." Meaning Gouken is capable of completely removing his conscious thoughts and attuning to every aspect of his surroundings on an instinctual and subconscious level. Whereas Akuma uses power to fight, Gouken uses self-control and disciplined awareness. Akuma preaches power for its own sake, Gouken teaches restraint and focus. All that said, Akuma isn't evil. Akuma doesn't actively seek harm on any other person or want to destroy anything out of hatred. He fights honorably and fairly, making it known that he seeks power through powerful opponents and won't hold back in the face of a challenge. Characters like M. Bison who actively and deliberately seek to do harm to the world are who should be considered "evil."

I mean he’s certainly up there though the top spot is disputed. He’s been the only one to outright defeat Gouki in battle but Gouki did subsequently come back and almost kill him. The SFIV fight was inconclusive though Gouken obviously didn’t lose/get put into another coma.
