Whitewater of the Nation’s Capital: Great Falls Race (Entry #37 Short Film of the Year Awards 2020)

- 14 miles upriver of Washington, D.C., the Potomac River cascades over Great Falls, a set of spectacular Class V+ rapids that drop 76 feet in less than a mile. The Great Falls Race was one of the original extreme whitewater competitions, and nearly 30 years later it is still one of the most challenging. It may be the only extreme race where the course changes year-to-year depending on the water level! This year, many of the best paddlers on the East Coast showed up and put on a show, while Geoff Calhoun, longtime Great Falls native, took the win.

Just fell in love with that song!!!! ❤🎶🎹
This is so awesome in so many ways it's insane!!!!!!
Man I wish I would have gotten into this when I was young, looks like too much fun
the awkward moment when you see a bright pink bow pointing at the sky, and you know... Dane Jackson was there
Wish there were more video to enjoy. More whitewater is better! Thanks!
I have several full runs from this race on my channel, Drew Lehmann. Tall Tales Productions. Enjoy!
How do they safety "subway" for a race like this? Or is it a low risk that you would get washed into that channel?
The race was on Virginia lines this year, whereas Subway is on center lines, so they weren't racing that section
Is Subway effectively 100% fatal?
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 No, there were 3 guys who accidentally took the Subway and all survived. 2 of them were pretty f'n banged up, though. That table rock WILL kill you.
@@ian_brown subway is in the fingers section and they are clearly going right by it
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 the people who have died in it all fell out of their kayak upstream and went down it by mistake. some have survived it actually going through on a kayak i believe.
This is Great!
Yes 👍👍👍👍😜
Song choice w recurring lyric “I guess I’m gonna die too young” feels a little tone deaf given that Shannon Christy died here at age of 23, I believe while preparing for this race (which was cancelled that year as a result). Maybe I’m being overly sensitive, but other viewers I watched it w had same thought. 🤷🏼♂️
You're being extremely critical and disrespectful to a local, who made this video to highlight and show how awesome the event was. The song choice has absolutely nothing to do with Shannon, thanks for your input though.
I agree. You’re being overly sensitive. Yuck!
Ryan Carroll you are obviously welcome to disagree with my point, but I don’t think it’s fair to say I’m being “extremely critical and disrespectful.” I was simply sharing my opinion, and nothing ab the way I did it disrespected anyone. If me saying it felt “a little tone deaf,” and then admitting I might be being overly sensitive strikes you as extremely critical, I’d argue you are definitely being overly sensitive. Thanks for your input though. 🙄
Kevin Hill based on the definition of the word you actually are being critical. And disrespectful in the sense that you are discrediting his work because of something that happened years ago. It’s time to move on. Never forget, but move on.
The "other viewers" thought you were being overly sensitive too, they just didn't want to upset you so they played along. Grow up.
That song would be awkward if someone drowned.
I've been involved in extreme sports my entire life, which naturally involves watching a lot of related footage. But it is only with kayaking videos that I have to mute 4 out of 5. The music choices are for the most part, inexplicable. This has nothing to do with not enjoying a particular genre or artist, everyone has their own taste. That's fine. But they simply tend to be cheap, really bad produced tracks that have nothing to do with the footage.
What's an example of a song that would "have something to do with the footage" of a kayaking video?
@@ian_brown Hey Ian. It's not about a particular track, artist or genre. It has a lot to do with the location, scenery, pace of movement etc. It's easier for me to give you examples of surfing videos, if you have patience or interest to check them out. Nordurland with Torren Martyn is an example of a film where the music flows seamlessly with the Icelandic scenery and contemplative feel of the footage. Often understated, without the viewer not paying too much attention to it. Pedro's Bay is another, with an entirely different type of music, but, yet again, it works with the tropical surroundings and retro feel.
As for Kayaking, plenty of good stuff out there as well. I'll use 'Summertime on the Sjoa river' by Senders as an example, because the tune is actually not my cup of tea, and would never be on my personal playlist. However, simply because I don't happen to like it, doesn't mean it doesn't work. It does. And I can appreciate the selection, because it fits with the overall feel and was obviously a carefully considered choice.
Of course I'm also aware that due to copyright issues, the music selection available to a lot of editors is limited, but using a bit of extra time for experimenting goes a long way.
All the best, J
I enjoyed the music..thought it suited the clip tbh..but hey everyone is different right....I use to surf also years ago but in my opinion kayaking is way more technically demanding...reading the river etc...I mean you wouldnt go down those falls on a surfboard right😁especially after 14 pints of stout🇮🇪...but kayakers surf those waves which I'd love to try someday...that river was rowdy👌
I've noticed that also. Makes me wonder if autism is more highly represented in the sport.
Norderlund is a 30 minute FILM produced by a professional crew and with its own soundtrack. Comparing it to a highlight reel of a 50 person local race reeks of elitism. It’s like complaining about a high school concert and saying “It’s inexplicable why they don’t sound like the Met.”
