    Travel tips for Brindisi, Italy:
The city was important in times in war, such as World War II. You’ll notice this when you see the various lookout points, castles and forts.
Due to local safety regulations guests are not permitted to walk inside the port of Brindisi. A free shuttle bus service was provided to take you between the ship and the city center.
Don’t forget to pick up a map at the excursion office. The map they have here is faded. Here are some of the places you can visit.
You don’t need a city tour guide for this town. It’s really small and walkable. I would recommend booking a tour to Lecce. It’s 40 minutes away from Brindisi. The cruise offered a tour for 58.90 euros a person. I didn’t go personally but this town was pretty boring so I feel like any other place might have been better than here.
It’s pretty useless to get dropped off here at 2 when everything is closed for riposo (rest time). The siesta is between noon to 4. The only thing left to do is walk around and look at all the monuments.
The name Brindisi comes from the latin brundisium through the greek brentesion and message brenton meaning “head of deer.” Because of the shape of the port looks like the head of a stag.
Brindisi is part of the beautiful Salento region - the “heel” of the Italian boot. This city is a major port for trade with Greece and the Middle East. Brindisi was an ancient Greek settlement predating the Roman expansion.
    Top Sights in Brindisi:
    1) Brindisi Cathedral is the main religious structure in the city
    2) The Monument to Italian Sailors is one of the most iconic structures in the city.
    3) Roman Columns: symbolizes the ending of the road. Only one column survived, and the top was replaced with a copy. The original capital is inside the museum of Nervegna. I’ll show you this later. The other column fell in 1528 only the base and a rock area is left. The other part was given as a gift to the city of Lecce.
    4) Casa Del Turista ("The Tourist House") This house is built on top of an ancient Roman ruin.
    5) Ruins of the Roman Aqueduct - this is close to Porta Mesagne gate. The tanks were collecting drinkable water by means of pipes coming from a place named “Pozzo de Vito” The flow of the water through several tanks allowed natural cleaning of water by decantation before supplying it to town’s fountains.
    6) Best Gelato in Brindisi, Italy: Bar Rosso e Nero. Get the Croccantino e Rhum (Crunchy rum) and Nocciola (Hazelnut) with panna (cream). Cost €2,50 = $3.06 US dollars.
    7) Nervegna Museum - free entry and free view!

This was helpful so as not to spend money on expensive tours when you can do it yourself. Not great that everything shuts down midday when they know tourists are arriving from cruise ships.

If you are thinking of visiting Brindisi I would advise that you don't waste time watching this. Much of the video is about how to get off your cruise ship, then complaining that everything is shut and then brief comments about various sights sound as if being read from a brochure.

Thank you for visiting my city, actually we never see the city as you see tourists. Thanks to this video, we can learn from you to keep it more alive. Unfortunately we carry with us centuries old traditions, like that of closing everything after midday, the fault of the Spanish domination that has imposed the "siesta" ..lol .. Thanks again for the video, and come back soon to visit us. A citizen of Brindisi.

Hello Life of Lin, once I was a tour guide in Brindisi, history and archeology have always been my passion. Have you ever seen San Giovanni al Sepolcro? It is a temple shaped like a horse stirrup, built towards the end of the year 1000 by Boemondo D'Altavilla the Norman, it represents a stylized copy of the sepulcher of Jerusalem. It was built on a Roman domus, as was done in that era, the waste material was taken and built on the pagan area with pre-built materials. In fact there are Roman columns with original Corinthian style capitals of the Roman period and capitals instead squared in the medieval period to represent the sacred and the profane, then there are various frescoes of different eras. You must keep in mind that Brindisi was founded, as historical sources say, between the ninth and eighth centuries BC, it has the age of the Odyssey and the Iliad of Homer. The name of Brindisi comes from the Greek messapico Brentesion, which means deer head, this because of its port, which has the two marine inlets that form like two horns, if you see from above the port of Brindisi. I said that it is of Messapian origin. The Messapians are the ancient lineage of the Salento peninsula (which includes the province of Brindisi, Lecce and Taranto). The Messapians can be considered a union between the native people of these places mixed with the peoples of the sea,
which came from Albania, Greece and the island of Crete.
You can see Santa Maria del Casale from the Crusader period, Santa Lucia with the Crypt, the cathedral dedicated to St. John the Baptist, the provincial museum MAPRI. There is the castle Alfonsino, the one on the sea that you saw when you arrived in Brindisi, there are many other things to see and with a good guide, you will see and discover so much history that has passed from our city, from Roman emperors like Julius Caesar , Pompey, Octavianus, the mythical Spartacus, the Byzantines with Justinian the emperor, Frederick II of Swabia, The Angevins, then the Aragonese, the Spaniards, then the French etc etc ... From Brindisi the sixth crusade of Frederick II called of the excommunicated, because the Swabian emperor was excommunicated by the Pope for taking Jerusalem without provoking a war. He pledged the capture of Jerusalem for 10 years with Sultan Al-Kamil. Maybe without rewriting now the history of Brindisi because it would take about six thousand years and I do not think you have all this time, (lol ..) when you come to Brindisi, we will see to meet.In the meantime, I hope I have not written too much, I send the best regards to you all. A question, where do you come from? Just for curiosity. As you will have well understood about things to say and know there are many, and what I wrote here is only 0.0001% of what there is to say ... ahahha .. (Lol). I wish you a good day, see you soon.
if you are on facebook, we can keep in touch there.
      Bye .
