Thank you guys! Very helpful. Could you guys consider making a blog post or video on foreigners and mortgages here in Japan? I was checking your site for an article on it but didn’t find it.

      I assume you've watched TokyoLlama's videos.
The influx of foreigners will likely end up being bittersweet...

Very well done! 🙌 Great point on the required language skills. Of course, it may vary based on the industry, but under N2/N1 it can be very challenging at time, even in a flexible organization.

It took me forever to get my COE! But others got it so quick. I guess there's some kind of status for the company to receive it quickly or not.

Could I go there on a tourist visa and switch to a work visa when I find a job?

Legally, I believe you are not supposed to job hunt under a temporary visitor status or tourist visa. But you can technically take job interviews and the employer can start the visa paperwork while you’re there. The catch would be that the CoE would not necessarily be issued within the time frame of your stay in Japan and you are not entitled to extend your stay. You would likely have to first fly back to your home country and wait for the visa process to be completed from there. You will always hear of exceptions though, but it’s best to be realistic.
