  • Block nurses play a huge role in regional anesthesia service. NYSORA’s regional anesthesia service substantially increased operating room efficiency and allowed for an increase in daily cases because of the tasks completed by block nurses. This is because ALL anesthetic procedures are performed in the block room (spinal, epidural, and nerve block anesthesia included).
Our hand surgery program is done under nerve block anesthesia for over 95% of all patients. However, without block nurses, monitoring our regional anesthesia service would not be nearly as efficient. In this video, we describe the role of the regional anesthesia block nurse and the many benefits of implementing a dedicated regional anesthesia block nurse team in a perianesthesia setting.

That’s gotta be pretty insulting to call a CRNA a “block nurse”. Never even heard that term

It’s pretty insulting that your own bias would denigrate a nurse just because you either are a or advocate for CRNAs. Your lack of understanding of the operating room staffing/dynamics is no excuse to imply that a “block nurse” is an insulting title. It simply refers to the nurse who is kind enough to help assist in the administration of a nerve block. He/she is often taking a moment from their other duties in the operating room to give assistance. Dr. Hadzic is trying to give recognition to their important contribution to patient care. He never said that these were CRNAs, but rather, peri-operative nurses. Perhaps if your head was clear, you’d realize that there are plenty of valuable talents about in the operating suites including OR, Pre-op, and PACU nurses that often cross over to help in the care of surgical patients. Depending on a particular institution’s resources, these “block nurses” can come from any of these specialized areas. Please know that ALL nurses deserve the respect and recognition for the work they do, not just those with lots of letter behind their names.

Hi Eman190. Thank you for watching our channel. The "Block Nurse" term is the common description for an RN that specializes in the care of patients having regional anesthesia. You can read more about the term from the paper by Russel et al "Implementing a regional anesthesia block nurse team in the perianesthesia care unit increases patient safety and perioperative efficiency" in the Journal of Perianesth Nurs Feb 2013. The term has been used much longer though. And it certainly has nothing to do with CRNA. Best regards.

The OP must be a BLOCK nurse. Literal block. So sensitive, blocks are tougher than that.

Please do not use the term “block” nurse and “anesthesia” nurse in the same reference.

Hi Harold. Totally agree - two different professionals. Unfortunately, we simply reproduced the term form the nursing journal: Russel et al "Implementing a regional anesthesia block nurse team in the perianesthesia care unit increase patient safety and perioperative efficiency" in the Journal of Perianesth Nurs Feb 2013. Indeed, a distinction between the two different professions should be clearly made. Thank you for watching!
