  • So Abba got a new car for the use down at the boat house, but before we can use it to haul kayak, we had to outfit it with a new rack system. In this video we show you a few different ways to haul your kayaks on top of your car using the factory racks. All cars are different, and all boats are different, so if you have a question on what might work for you please leave it in the comments and well help as we can.

    Fold down J Racks if you have a "GARAGE". Put trash can or large object in your garage bay before leaving it's a good reminder not to drive into the garage with kayaks on the roof.

      That is a good idea. I hang a very small safety orange flag from my rear view mirror to remind me that I am using the roof rack (or bike rack on the back). Other places that might be too short also: some independent drive-through windows, parking garages to name a few. I make a lot of mistakes but that one i have not made but a coworker did and it was not pretty. As i recall it was while driving a fairly new car. He was just sick, damage to car, house and of course whatever he was carrying. Money out of pocket for insurance deductibles was particularly painful. Never a good time for that to happen but the stars seemed to be aligned "just wrong". If there are other "reminders" from others love to read about them...

      I'm installing a "stop sign" that flops down in front of the driver as the garage door opens. I like the trash can idea, but I'd probably forget that just as easily as forgetting the kayak racks anyway.

    Great vid but the only comment I would make is the bow line is not for a little added sequrity it is the most important tie down that you will ever make one big reason is insurance if you dont have a bow line you might not be covered by your car insurance WORTH CHECKING ?????

    Dan, what's the proper angle for the kayak on the roof? Leaned inward or straight up on its side? I have Swiss Cargo kayak racks for one or two yaks. I'm never sure of the proper angle.

    I have a Mazda CX-9 suv and am wondering if I can fit 2 Malone Sea Wings & kayaks on my factory roof bars? I am getting a Pungo 105 kayak that is 30” wide. I am undecided on the other kayak yet, but imagine it will be something similar. Do you think that is possible, or will I have to do a setup similar to yours in this video?

    By the end of this week I'll have two kayaks (a Wilderness Systems Ride 115 and a Tarpon 130T), and I'll need to carry on top of a Pathfinder. I have a Malone j hook that I plan to you use. My upper body isn't as strong as it used to be and I find loading from rear easier (last time I side loaded and broke a mirror off). Can I mount the J frame facing inwards so I can load from rear, then load the 2nd yak flat from the rear?

    Great video. I have a couple of questions that I hope you can answer. I have an older model RX300 with a factory install roof rack but there is a label on the bar that reads maximum weight capacity of 70 lbs, if a Hobie Compass weight 69 lbs without all the gears does this mean my roof rack can barely hold the kayak’s weight. Ideally, should the weight capacity of the roof rack be 10 + lbs more than than the kayak weight ? Lastly, for something as wide as the Hobie Compass do you recommend a jaylow or something else. Btw, I love the video you did on how to choose the right paddle. Thank you

    • @tangmany9855
      @tangmany9855 6 років тому +1

      It might be 70 lbs front 70 lbs aft, 140 lbs equal loads.

    • @kenjustice5388
      @kenjustice5388 4 роки тому

      you can go to your dealer and purchase the factory cross bars. It's usually an option, even though you have the side rails installed from the factory for the roof rack. I've had a few SUVs in my lifetime and they all had the roof "rack" and the cross bars from the factory, but the cross bars were shown on the factory window sticker as an option upgrade. But they are worth it. Seems like the manufacturers would just build it into the price of the roof rack, installed from the factory and be done with it!? LOL

      I have one, I got a crossbar from the dealer at sale, and am planning to attach a thule compass to it. Your car has little rectangles on the roof which pop out. There's bolt holes underneath and thule makes a super expensive foot that fits nicely.

    BATH MAT!!! Thank you for mentioning that. I load my 17.5 ft Perception Sea lion and its Wilderness Systems Cape Horn (15') onto a mini van from the rear by lifting one end of the 50 pound boat then sliding it up rather like your last boat here (I have round racks and pool noodles)... The stern often slides, especially on pavement or gravel...
    WHOOT!!! BATH MAT ...adding to gear

    Always put a twist in the straps - it stops them vibrating at speed, and making that loud "farting" sound.

    I love the look of the 1st option but the 2nd option is probably my best bet since I'm only 5'3" and have a lifted hummer. Oh yeah and I love the step stool idea!

  • @Grimenoughtomaketherobotcry
    @Grimenoughtomaketherobotcry 4 роки тому +2

    DO NOT put the sticky side of the bathmat down on the parking lot pavement!!! "Sticky" means it will pick up stones, sand, broken glass, nails, tacks, staples etc., that you would rather not have imprinted into the surface of your car when you drag a kayak along it. Put it in a clean bag until needed and keep it off the ground! Otherwise a helpful video except I have older Thule square bars that I bought for my old 09 Matrix and had to resort to ebay to buy Thule Crossroads 450 towers, the only solution to make the bars connect to the rails of my 2018 Rav4 XLE. Hopefully the towers are now winging their way from a reseller in Sweden, as no North American online retailer has them in stock and Thule has stopped making them.

    would the malone racks accommodate a perception 11.0 hi life (paddleyak)? The malone rack says it will accomodate up to a 32 inch wide kayak, and the perception is 34 inches, but i'm wondering if I could make it work? If not, do you have another recommendation for transporting the 11.0 hi life? Thanks in advance.

  • @chriskelvin248
    @chriskelvin248 4 роки тому +2

    I've been seakayaking and transporting my boats on the vehicle top since '99. With this kayak and sideways J cradle configuration, the bow and stern lines are unnecessary. Just extra fussing at the end of the day. I take the 6' or so extra tiedown strap and chuck it in the boat cockpit. Then I put on my neoprene cockpit cover. Keeps out bugs (spiders!) and jokers that toss in trash at the gas station or rest stop. Alternatively, just run it in the car door opening and shut the door over it. They wind won't pull them out and water never seems to leak inside. Again, less fussing. I always make sure I run the front strap right under the lip of the cockpit coaming. I also loop it thru the loop on the cockpit cover. A little detail that adds security to sudden vehicle stops or impacts. And that little step ladder? Always carry the very same one, lol! Especially for the taller SUV.

    So I've been looking into kayaks I think I'm going to get a pelican mustang 100x. One issue is I live in an area where there's a lot of theft and I'm worried about leaving the kayak on the roof of my car in case someone steals it. Are there systems you can get that will lock it on? I see the lock you point out but looks like that's just for the mount itself. Some people on reddit suggested using bike locks looped through the mount and a place on the boat but it doesn't look like the mustang has anything like that. Thanks for the video!

I just bought a 2015 Wilderness Systems Tsunami 125 (my first kayak!), and I swear to you there is no place to attach any sort of a line at neither stern nor bow, except the carry handles, and that seems to me about as sketchy as using a vegetation handhold when scrambling up a mountain.

Currently I have the Yakima SweetRoll (waaayyy over priced now in 2023). I was able to integrate a Malone stingray load assist into the rear sweetroll saddle. Works great. One of the most blatant lies of a video I have ever seen lol. Just say your carrying kayaks with extra equipment, don't bait us into a false video for views

      It's a factory rack. Some people either don't have a factory rack, or they replace the factory rack with a third party rack system from Yakima or Thule. Then you put the kayak mount on top of the rack. It used to be that Yakima and Thule mounts only worked on their own racks, but all of their rack accessories work with factory racks as well these days.
      This also applies to bike racks, ski racks, baskets, luggage containers, etc.

    I drive a 2008 ford escape, it has a roof top rack but the crossbars are at the front and back and non adjustable, do I need separate crossbars?

    Thanks for making great reviews and how too’s. Wish you were local. I’m actually looking for an appropriate roof rack for a fishing kayak. I’ve seen some people use different load assist devices. What’s your opinion?

    I’m currently car topping an ascend H12 hybrid fishing kayak and a sundolphin SS Journey 12.... both relatively heavy boats especially to car top. My Malone Multi Rack has been amazing so far for both boats. If I’m carrying just my ascend, then I lay the racks flat and pretty much carry it like a canoe. If I have both I flip up the center cradle and have them both in the cradle. Definitely a two person load with cradles up and on my Subaru Outback it can be a little bit challenging. It works fine on the factory cross bars however definitely would work better with aftermarket cross bars. Overall I love the Malone multi rack though. Especially for the price point

    Wow! Not only have I been deciding on kayaks, I have been figuring out how to carry them. Trailer, car top, just use the St. Lawrence Seaway?
    I really like this demo. I knew that Yakima and Malone would have something that would work with our Honda CRV. Thanks for this VERY HELPFUL demo!

    You need to retitle your video. This has nothing to do with loading a kayak on a factory rack. It is how to load a kayak using aftermarket racks.

      Well C W, I don't think your a "numb nuts". As much as I like Dan he did not secure the kayaks to a "factory rack" so, the title is misleading although the info was still great.

      @@mre4875 WOW!!! It was a factory installed roof rack and you have to provide accessories to attach whatever you are wanting to carry on the factory roof rack, whether it's kayaks, a ladder or a enclosed cargo carrier. The factory installed roof rack is there to safely secure accessories, adapters and your cargo to your car's roof. Dan's title is spot on.... ;)

    Why did you not use the front tow hook instead of the hood to secure the kayak? The wind can bend the hood overtime.

    Love the idea of the seawing for Eddyline but for rotomolded kayaks I was told it should be hauled hull up so that it doesn’t oilcan. Any truth to this? Love your channel, I’ve learned a ton of stuff. Keep up the great vids!
