  • Ostrich Ferns/fiddlehead outing with my family. Great day outside. Great plant to learn young and easy to gather for the kids. Had lots of fun and made a great steak and fiddlehead supper ! Went out May 18 to gather but the ferns were barely coming out yet. Some snow and ice still in the creek bed. We are a bilingual family so speak both french and english. Thank you for coming along with us !

Very nice day! Our little family made a tradition of foraging fiddleheads also. Then we would bring them home and Dad would fry them up with butter, salt and pepper xo tres bon!

The little man is growing. It's fun to see him waving you on. That meal was a beautiful sight. Is that a Laguiole knife I saw? Thanks for the video.

Yes I think sp they are Laguiole. A more basic model bit work great for steak ! I like how you alwaya notice the small details. Thank for the comment man ! Cheers, Steve/ NW

Merci !

Welcome back! Glad to see your doing ok! Had to do some translation in the beginning! But I am not giving up on learning lol. Good looking family! So what do fiddleheads taste like? Over the years watching your channel I've learned about not over harvesting them and that there is a correct time to pick them. You also have an eye on how to make an awesome looking dinner plate!. Definitely a big thanks for keeping your channel going! Hope to see more👍

Hey Steve, those puff balls (les pettes d'ours) make a good tinder for flint and steel. The powder takes a cold spark from carbon steel and flint. Just saying. I love fiddleheads. Glad you made it out there. Take care.

@@NomadicWoodsman Big update. I got that from Ellsworth Yeager's book. I just tried one today (Wednesday the 3 June) that had dried very well, and puffed soft dust. I tried to catch a spark but did not with steel and English flint. Then, I used a piece of my Amadou, it took a spark instantly (so I ruled out humidity). I charred the Pette d'our with the amadou coal, it only smouldered but did not take hold. I spoke too soon. Serves me right for trusting Old Ellsworth. I'm not sure if he even managed to get a coal himself. So, count that one out for me. Sorry to get your hopes up. I will now climb down off of Mount Stupid with Ellsworth. lol.
