  • I flew the PA28 to Fenland in Lincolnshire, and found out that locating the airfield is easier said than done when every field looks the same!

Hi Noel, thanks for this video, it brought back a lot of memories. Not many people remember that British Airways used to have a helicopter division. Beccles was a main operating base for British Airways Helicopters which among other types flew Sikorsky S-61Ns to the Shell Leman and Indefatigable gas fields offshore Norfolk, the Amoco fields were supported from North Denes (Caister) by Bristow Helicopters. Most helicopter operations ended up moving to Norwich. But in the 80s and 90s, there were many helicopter flights between Beccles, North Denes (Caister) and offshore. In the 80s, the area was alive with S-76s, Bell 212s S-61s and even Westland 30s from BA. Thanks again.

Visited Beccles and the British Airways Helicopter base when I was a kid. My dad's childhood friend was a captain there following a career as a fast jet pilot in the RAF. I remember discovering that the Captains in Helicopters sit in the right hand seat but I can't remember why.

Many, many years ago, I flew with an instructor from Cranfield, and we could not find Fenland. There was no SkyDemon in those days. I may have had a Garmin GPS 92 with us, but I don't remember. Anyway, as I was still training, I wasn't too upset with myself as the instructor was just as bewildered 🙂

Is it me, or is your confidence level rising with every video? Looked like a greaser to me. Did my first take-off last weekend. So proud, so excited, such a buzz! It wasn't pretty but I'm sure the screams from my CFI were of joy and admiration...right?

I'm impressed Noel, I've just found this channel after watching your main channel. I didn't even know you had a license!

Noel said on a vlog he used to have a PPL 20 years ago but let it lapse. Re-qualified just about a year ago. (First vlog regaining his PPL was one year ago). It is a brilliant second channel. I'm really enjoying.

As a fellow male Noel and aviation fan, I salute you sir. Unfortunately, I have way too much anxiety to actually pilot an aircraft, so I am living vicariously through you. Godspeed!

I’ve watched a whole bunch of Noel’s air and rail vids but had no clue you were a pilot as well. Super cool. My military career in the United States Navy took me the opposite way………under the water. I still hope to possibly try for private flying one day. Convincing the wife might be tough. Wish me luck.

I salute anyone who has a pilots licence, since I was a child I've always wanted to be one but I just know I would fail with all the tech stuff you need to learn,so I will just sit back and watch everyone's amazing flights and trips😊👍👍

You made me burst into that Monty Python song 'Fenland, Fenland, Fenland, a Country where I want to be...... (yeah, I know) 🙄😂 I couldn't see the Runway either. Their Controller sounded a bit grumpy or was it just me? Great flight Noel, thanks for sharing.

Also..less than a mile to the west of Deenethorpes main runway, there's a b&b with a runway and hangar, walking distance to Weldon Village with two decent pubs with great food if you fancy a family flight and night out Noel 🙂

Here's the trick to finding an insignificant point like Fenland without GPS - i.e. visually. Pick an IP (Initial Point) near the point you want to navigate to (in this case Fenland) which IS easy to locate.
For example this could be Spalding. Include Spalding as a turning point. When planning the leg from Spalding to Fenland select a track which will take you 1 or 2 miles to the right of Fenland so that it will definitely be on the left hand side. (This is like a calculated "mistake"). Pay careful attention to the timing from Spalding to Fenland (Typically 2 or 3 minutes).
As you reach the time calculated look for Fenland at the 9 o'clock position and hey presto it will be there. If it isn't then fly back to Spalding and start again.

navigated to fenland many times, tough to find especially when its flooded. You should fly to Fowlmere by Duxford, great food and people!

I have to say Noel, it was much harder to find before we started using SkyDemon. As you say another very nice little airfield to visit whenever you get the chance. Thanks for posting and look forward to the next one. I hope to be back in the air soon!

I don't mean to be a spoilsport but please don't stow your checklist on the instrument panel coaming - it causes potentially lethal internal reflections in the windscreen that make other aircraft (not to mention obscure airfields!) much harder to see. Stowing it where you did sets a poor example to others. I never allowed my students to do that, not even when taxiing. The coaming is painted flat black for a very good reason - that you might live to enjoy flying into old age.

    • @WhattheAI1

What do you make of his over-reliance of the GPS on his ipad? All it takes is a fault with it and there's his source of navigation gone as I don't see any charts either. I'm old school and prefer a chart, compass and stopwatch but the ipad thing just seems very lazy and complacent

I did some circuits starting and finishing at Fenland in a Hughes helicopter about 20 years ago. I struggled to find the place even though I'd just left there, the instructor had to keep pointing it out. It's a little bit easier nowadays since they put out the runway markers, I don't think they had them back then?

Great video, looks a lovey day for it but a shame about that wind. Looks like Fenland will make it onto my list of airfields to visit. If you truly want a field in the middle of nowhere, you may wish to considering visiting an airfield called Eddsfield in North Yorkshire.

@@FlyWithNoelPhilips Ooh sweet, I've done a few lessons out of Connington with one of the old flight instructors pre-covid, he vanished after the heat of the pandemic which was a shame as he was great, made sure I got the most out of it. I got gifted some more lessons so probably gonna go do that next month. Nothing like a spot of flying then a spot of lunch in the airfield cafe lol.
