  • Afternoon action of the annual "Round the Island Yacht Race".
    ...onthewight.com/watch-experien...
    Unfortunately, I was unable to get out in the morning and capture the biggest, fastest boats, but a nice fresh westerly wind kept things lively for when the bulk of the fleet came past Ventnor in the early afternoon so there was still plenty to see and film.

    Lovely video! Great story-telling and some cracking shots of over-powered racing yachts. Loved the inclusion of the Cornish Crabber towards the end, plodding his way around, totally under control and most likely beating many of the top-end racing yachts on handicap. 👏👏👏

      Thanks. I have to say I love the style of those Cornish Crabbers and Drascombe Luggers, ...but I can also see the appeal of those small but fast trimarans such as the Dragonfly and Astus.

      Slow remains slow and racing means taking risks. If you want to do a cruise, fine. But that‘s no racing.

And as for risks, the RNLI is funded by charitable donations, the air ambulance is supported by donations, and the Coast Guard are paid for out of our taxes. All of those are conspicuously present at this event because of people taking risks.

    Absolutely love this video. I could just keep watching it. It is the best I have seen of the round the island races. So many facets, land and spectator shots along with the crews of the yachts working hard, not just watching a procession. You should win some sort of award for your hard work. I only found your videos a couple of months ago, so many types! and now always look forward to watching your videos.❤

    Nice video, lovely views from the shore. We were on the other side of the lens though, and I can assure you that what look like “lively” sailing was in fact an utter shit show. 5 dismasting ( that I know of). 18 MOB situations, but thankfully no fatalities. Lovely day, but not for sailing, unless your hull speed exceeded wave speed. Been sailing JOG for years now, and that was probably the most nervous I’ve been on a downwind reach under kite.

    • @paulknights3701
      @paulknights3701  Рік тому +2

      Interesting to hear your take - someone who was actually out there on the water. With my own limited knowledge of sailing (some dinghy sailing and windsurfing from years ago!) I could see from a low down angle and looking downwind through the long lens that there was quite a following sea, which I understand wouldn't take much to induce a 'broach' (?) if the helmsman isn't constantly correcting the rudder... especially if there was a lot of sail area up. A day of action and incidents for sure then, but as you say, thankfully, no fatalities.

    • @hamishjohnson2351
      @hamishjohnson2351 Рік тому +3

      Agreed. The video doesn't do it justice. I was out there with 3 of us in a 33ft legend and it was intense to say the least. Probably the most dangerous thing I've ever done in my life but loved it just the same. A 60ft boat capsised that we saw. Also had a massive tanker come through all the boats towards the finish. We broached once on the downleg as we don't have the keel for this kind of weather, had a unintended tack as well as a near miss from someone not knowing the rules while we are screaming "starboard" at him

    • @jeremyprice679
      @jeremyprice679 Рік тому +3

      I was out there and it was ...interesting! Been sailing JOG for 20 odd years and wisdom has finally arrived - no spinnaker this time but still hit 15 knots! We found it exhilarating, but it could so easily have gone differently.

    Excellent video. It's one of those races I'd love to take part in. Don't the yachts carry their engines? Yeah some needed assistance like the dismasted ones but others looked like, with an engine, they could make their own way back.

    • @paulknights3701

      I wonder if maybe the rigging and sails got tangled around rudder and props?

    • @Stephengetseven
      @Stephengetseven Рік тому +1

      If they have no way to cut away the rigging. The mast and sails just become sea anchors. The yacht that was dismasted probably is motoring. But because of the massive drag. They'll be going really slow.

    • @carolb3960
      @carolb3960 11 місяців тому

      Yeah, and there is the risk of broken mast getting caught by a wave then punching into the hull.

Just could not keep the boat on a steady course, kites just kept collapsing all over. Boats broaching left and right, forcing others to manoeuvre to avoid,forcing more collapses.
