If anybody else is intimidated to enjoy this type of flying, don’t be. I too was too intimidated. I watched all of Larry’s videos. I went to CC Pococks Bush school. I returned home, and had a whole new set of skills and confidence. I can’t stress it enough, Larry is correct. If you stay coordinated, you can stay out of trouble. What a wonderful channel.

A beautiful video about slo-flight. I love your videos. You are a wonderful stick and rudder pilot as well as one who knows the difference between airspeed and AOA. Not many of our brothers and sisters really do. Your videography is also first-rate.

Very good videos! Combination of footage and useful comments, real life, no risktaking, no macho stuff. Wish I was living and flying at your place. In Belgium nothing is allowed making flying sometimes boring….

Another excellent video, Larry. I like the hover taxi (slow flight in low ground effect on a long runway) because it gives the student extended time at the airspeed that the wing will begin to fly (the basic low ground effect takeoff) and the airspeed the airplane will quit flying (power/pitch deceleration in ground effect to touchdown slowly and softly on the exact desired spot. Hover taxi also mitigates the common error of bring a down wing up with coordinated aileron and rudder. Because aileron is too often the first control moved, adverse yaw sends the nose in the wrong direction. By keeping the centerline between out legs with rudder only, the anti-turn control, we automatically keep the wing level. No allowed adverse yaw away from centerline (a turn), no unwanted bank. Independent control of bank with aileron and direction of longitudinal axis with rudder (side slip) allows aileron use on short final to set the wing and keep it there. Otherwise, no aileron.

Another amazing clip! Thank you Larry! I get so much out of your content and experience! I will be practicing slow flight tomorrow. I know my shorts and softs will benefit greatly.

Slow flight is essential in understanding and feeling your aircraft. Should get more attention in flight training.
And stall recovery. When you have done it a few times there is nothing to be afraid of. You just have to know the limits.

One question? If you’re not doing this for a living or humanitarian resupply then why? Why risk everything for this? Are we that bored with flying we have to flirt with disaster now?

Very informative Video as usual! I will do some videos about the WT9 regarding slow flight. It is a bit different, as the Aircraft is usually very noseheavy and definetly has different characterisitcs than a cessna :)

At 7:07 you made a very important point that many flight instructors are not always aware of. All corrective maneuvers must be coordinated, no matter how small the corrections need be. If you need a rudder, then you also need ailerons and vice versa. Many pilots keep their feet flat on the floor because the corrections are tiny. All corrections require both controls.
All minutia maneuvers must be done with stick and rudder, in a coordinated fashion, no matter how small. The only exceptions are for intentional slips to a landing. IMHO.

3 to 5kts above stall speed looks hazardous if the wind drops.

Your videos are amazing. I haven not heard you talk about how very smoothly and deliberately you use the controls in slow flight, obviously avoiding accelerated stall of the flight control surfaces during the back side of the power curve flight. Your cameras capture your smoothness.

Nice video, good camera work to support your views. Slow flight is any airspeed less than normal cruise. MCA (minimum controllable airspeed) is the configuration with all drag devices extended and whatever power is needed to maintain the stall warning device audible. MCA is when any further increase in pitch or decrease in power (if available) brings on the physical manifestation of a stall. Remember, with the wing stalled the rudder is still flying (ball centered).

Do you find that slow landings can become more troublesome in crosswinds? Is there a method to compensate for crosswind or gusty landings while also doing it slow?

I had an instructor that had a slow flight method
At about 3 thousand feet he had me put on full flaps. Full power pull the nose until airspeed was zero and stall horn was blaring . From this position do a full 360 without a stall break
    .

Continue from above. Had me do it both left and right. Found the C 150 would actually have a small amount of climb at sea level. Even with plane in stall condition.
