Riot's new fighting game, Project L, is in the offing and starting to slowly show its alpha gameplay footage. Animation is one of my passions, so obviously I had to take a dive into the new trailers and all the new reveals and get unreasonably excited about the animation, the characters and fighters, and the moves and movesets.
A lot of this is still unpolished, but the principles are high quality and there are deeply interesting changes to the champions' character designs to look at. League of Legends champions are a natural fit for a fighting game, and the project is helmed by some apparently very credible FGC veterans, so... who knows. This might be the game that gets me to buy a fighting stick and get good.

Hitstop in Fighting games is more than just an animation technic. It's a mechanic that enables a lot of complexity in the game itself. It makes canceling moves into eachother easier, and enables hitstop option selects. Which is a technic that allows a single option an attacker can make to beat many options a defender can make that alter the condition of the game and give the attacker different outcomes for the same input. Like safe jumps in most games, where if a defender uses an invincible move on wakeup, it makes an attackers move whiff which allows the attacker to return to an actionable state much quicker and block the defenders invincible move. And in Guilty Gear Strive, it enables Counterhit option selects that give you different moves depending on whether you counter hit an opponent or just hit them regularly, because counterhitting someone gives you much more Hitstop.

I know you called it out as a bit of a downside, but I personally ADORE how they've handled the screen shake on Darius' attacks. While I can totally see how it could be overbearing, to me it really helps sell each of his hits being titanic. Every time he smacks somebody it feels like a truck.

Just a head up about hitboxes vs hurtboxes within the context of fighting games. A hitbox is the "attack" portion of a model when making some sort of attack, whereas the hurtbox is the "vulnerable" portion of a model at any given time. If one players hitbox collides with another characters hurtbox then the second character gets hit. Any given move on a character has its own unique hitboxes and hurtboxes which can vary wildly and help inform both that moves strengths as well as weaknesses.

12:08 Haven't seen the entirety of the video yet so I'm not sure if Skyen mentions it again but those ropes are probably there to prevent her pants from being wet. I live near a beach so that may be the purpose. What I understand is that Illaoi folded up her pants and tied it with a rope

    • @junimondig

The origin story of capri pants is supposedly that the designer went on beach walks (on the island "Capri" in Italy) and her pants kept getting wet at the ankles so she designed trousers that weren't shorts but short enough to not soak up the sea water.
Feels like a good reason for the ropes being there. It also adds visual interest and looks more rustic I guess instead of clean and modern.

as a fan of fighting games and animation in general, I will comment on some things you said:
17:14 , you said the characters will have their model darkened by reaction of the shade, but in fighting games, it is common that 3D model has its own light source so the characters is perfectly lit and distinguishable by the players. I know it gives the feeling that the playable characters don't exist in harmony with the stages, but for the sake of readability, it has to be this way
Otherwise, great video, I've waited for your input on Project L

i'd love to see him dissect the guilty gear cast since they have some of the most interesting animations(and how their personalities influence their playstyles) in all of fighting games. The way slayer clearly isn't even trying when he's fighting you(just look at his downed animation and his hit animations, the dude literally strikes a pose whenever he's hit or loses), the way Anjis animations and mechanics show how he sees fighting as a dance, the differences between Holy order sol and regular sol showing how over the years Sol has stopped trying in battles, and my favourite of all: The way Leo's fighting style literally makes him stronger when he's looking away from his problems(in this case the opponent) because he has no attachment to his life due to the crippling survivors guilt he obtained seeing his men die fighting the gears. While GG story is kinda weird and low key kinda bad the characters are increadibly well developed through their gameplay and in game animations.

kind of late to the party on this one but another likely reason that Ekko's pants got redesigned is for visual clarity. Super important in fighting games to be able to identify what moves the other player is doing quickly and accurately (some stages get banned from competitive play because of things like grass or water that obscure characters' feet), and giving so much more definition to his legs allows for much more distinct animations.

On Darius's character change. The primary thing driving the feeling that Darius has changed is his haircut, and there is a pretty obvious reason they would change his hair. Darius's silhouette in Project L is meant to highlight the shoulders and his axe, his head is meant to be smaller so that he looks bulkier and stronger and his previous hairstyle is too big to accomplish that effect. As a result darius is getting a slicked back hair style to reduce the emphasis on his head. Outside of his hair he looks very very similar.

Adding little hairs and darker testures on the chin and adding tufts of gray on his hair can instantly age him up. Along with other things like wrinkles and such. They only have the basics done and the details will come in at later stages. so a fun thing on darius for me is that his leaning back-and-pivoting/shifting his weight style of attacking also serves a potential mechanical purpose: it lets them protray his attacks as meaty and threatening without him physically taking over the entire screen, since big as he is and long as the axe is (especially with him using the pommel ring at the very end of the handle) if he were to fully lean into the attacks he'd cover the entire screen with hitboxes at full extension, which could become more than a little obnoxious in the actual _game_ part of project L

Excellent video as per usual, I will say that I'm noticing a few of the times you note the transitions between animations being awkward is more due to something common to Fighting games, which is that oftentimes you can cancel the animation of an attack with other things, like dashing, jumping, or even certain other attacks. Biggest one I notice is at 29:20 when Illaoi does a jump cancel out of what I assume to be a standing heavy attack.

Ekko being a wonderful example since we could say he’s from a future where he is more mature and knows how to better fend for himself while using his drive to stay head of the danger. Hello Skyen, hope you have a wonderful day.
The game of project L really exites me, I like fighting games a lot and I enjoyed your analysis of the animations shown so far, it's a work in progress but it sure looks fun.
So, there are somethings that I would like to say (it might be a lot, sorry):
The "dust clouds" of illaoi is water created from the tentacles, kinda like what happens in League and Runeterra with the tentacle cards (also I really like the jump attack, like, jumping and swingging the idol with such power towards the opponent).
Darius reminds me a little of the artwork from Legens of Runeterra, that looks a bit younger before the level up animation, and the movement of Darius is like moving to chop wood, always with one feet on the ground and the other one to guide the body alongside the torso, and last but not least, the super animation was made in the previous info and videos shown before, the one where they are fighting in the P&Z docks, so the model of Darius during the super is the old one I believe.
Ekko's desing is a bit different, checking LoR artwork it definitly changed to something a bit more serious to what is shown here, I'm guessing that they tried the old desing and added a lot of physics that messed up a lot but it's just a guess. About the movement of Ekko it looks a lot like parkour and street fighting, being someone that grewup in Zaun is believeable for Ekko, giving him a lot of personality and making him more identifiable with the way he moves and the way he attacks.
Jinx is really chaotic, the way she moves and attacks is way sillier than the characters shown so far, the little changes in her desing might bother some, but (to me) it seems like a fusion of the league outfit and arcane, it looks nice.
Ahri, it's honestly impressive how far and varied her desings are in a lot of the games and incarnations (like the different skins of hers) so it's either, a more mature version of all the characters that are going to appear in the game or they are trying to find a more defined desing for Ahri to make a rework for her, I don't really know but that's my idea (also, Ruined king Ahri as a skin with her own voice lines and effects for the fighting game would be cool and I really like this version of hers). Her movements seem refiend and even ellegant but lethal as, well, she's a vastayan, some sort of half beast, kinda like hunting but actually controling herself.
So yeah, TL;DR I agree with a lot if not all of what you said, I'm as exited for the gameplay and the animations specially because they look great and are good reference for drawing keyposes. Looks fun, promizing and can't wait for more.

Didn't see this mentioned in the video, so I'll just back up the "Ekko's clones have charges" theory here.
At 49:38, you can see that the clone that eventually turns his Z-drive pink is colored green, while at 52:34, the clone that doesn't trigger the pink Z-drive is colored pink. In the full video on riot's channel, there is also further evidence of this being the case at around 5:04, where Ekko tags in, uses his special to slash, leaves behind a green colored clone (proving that it's not a case of different moves leaving behind different colored clones), and triggers his pink Z-drive, followed by him doing the reload animation.

I've loved the deep dive, and I'd love to see this kind of exploration in other notable fighting games (like GG Strive/Xrd, Skullgirls, DBFZ). Given its nature, this genre is very rich in detailed character animation and wacky ideas come to life through clever tricks. For something that's only 30% done, Illaoi already looks so promising.
Btw, I would not be surprised if they kept the animation "stuttery" because the keyframes are VERY important in how Fighting Games communicate the states of the characters, between startup, active and recovery frames (on top of other modifiers like counterhit states, types of invulnerability and lingering hurtboxes/hitboxes). Even recent 3D games like Guilty Gear Strive and Granblue Versus do that to an extent. Skullgirls also famously had to REMOVE in-between frames to improve readability and snappiness.
Same goes with shading, it's not uncommon for FG character to willingly avoid dynamic shadows to mimic the 2D style (like Guilty Gear Xrd and FighterZ did back in the day, although Xrd lets you turn it on, and it doesn't look as good imo).

To add a couple of things about fighting games that may help you understand why some fighting games animate/shade the way they do,
Fighting games are generally so low on pc resource usage that they can be played on a toaster, so most games will have a performance mode (or more commonly, a myriad of settings and/or mods) to allow you to play the game on most pcs and consoles. This is why a lot of shading remains fairly similar in games like Arc System Works games, and why foreground and background elements like shadows may not be present, since they can quite literally ruin the performance of the game. Think of it as them designing the game to look as good if the players were playing a match in a white void, and then designing the stages separately to interact with the characters
Fighting games also require the characters and moves to *feel* impactful, or at least feel the way the devs intend. Screen shake and hitstop is the main way this is accomplished, but other elements such as background elements moving in accordance to knockdowns, the floor below the characters creating craters and suddenly reforming below them, etc. Essentially, without these big moments of impact, mainly screen shake (as seen in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite), the attacks feel very unsatisfactory, and more like a chore than something you’re doing for fun.
During games, there are special moves canceling from normal attacks and normal attacks directly canceling into one another, there will be an absence of inbetween frames from one move to another. This causes a lot of moves to seem like they end abruptly, and a lot of moves to seem like there’s no windup. They’re almost all designed to start from their idle stance, which is why it might seem they return to a relatively normalized position before attacking. While it looks janky, it’s mostly intentional jank.
Last thing, this one’s more about the gameplay rather than the animation. Ekko, Jinx, Ahri and Darius were shown in an earlier dev diary doing other things. They did a deep dive into Ekko and explained that he has a green clone and a pink clone, the green one is fast but you’re locked into a certain move and it requires a recharge after he warps to it, and the pink one is slow but you can have any free action out of it. It’s less of a charge system and more of a weird risk/reward system
    Hope this helps!
Btw, favorite fighting game motion is 463214789632146+L+H , otherwise known as the star motion. Just the absurdity makes it my favorite

I dont think they should remove shadow on that field. It is used for gameplay purpuse. It separates arena in the middle , so that players know how far thay are relative to corners. Being in the corner in fighting games is really bad because you have no room to maneuver.

On Darius' age, personally I don't think he looks THAT young. Maybe his haircut is a litle bit more modern, but his face is still square, scarred and now he even has some strands of gray hair. Overall, to me he looks maybe 5 years yonger, but still experienced and badass

But maybe it’s just the lighting? I hope this makes sense 😭

Alright, quick question (please be patient, I'm new to the whole LOL-lore) about the time fuckery crackpot theory: couldn't it be possible that the story of Project L takes place at a very specific time between the Ruined King and the Noxian conquest of Ionia?

Interesting how League and Project L are approaching the same characters but from vastly divergent character design origins. League is drawing from the design needs of an RTS, which in turn derives from tabletop wargaming traditions wherein characters are designed to be 5 heads tall. Meanwhile Project L looks to be drawing from comic book aesthetics, in which characters are typically 8 heads tall.

avid fighting game player here, as far as tethering effects to the character model i believe it depends on the move and the goal from the people who make the hit boxes and all that frame game data. Sometimes they want they want the big particle effects to be a hit box as opposed to the move think of the after shock dealing dealing indirect damage. that readability is important because we'll want to know if the attack that someone whiffed that causes an after effect is dangerous or not. In illois case i think its just easier to tie specific effects to characters models as opposed to making them separate. Easier to tweak something thats already on the model i suppose.

A bit more on Ekko (maybe you said an I forgot, so if I get obliterated in the comments oh well)
Not just an upbringing thing on his animations being much less graceful and controlled, there’s a bit more story telling based on how prominent the Z-Drive is in this character. With much of his animations really trying to display the full body power Ekko puts into his attacks, and as you mention, the recklessness and risk he puts himself into by having to “catch” himself whenever he finishes one of his attacks, it really emphasizes how integral the Z-Drive is to Ekko as a part of his character and a tool for his fights.
I could very easily imagine a world we’re both story telling and game mechanics combine where Ekko thrashes his body doing ludicrously dangerous attacks, just to revert (animation cancel) back to a more healthy state for him and a less healthy state for his opponent.

Also the lack of ground shadows I do agree is likely just unfinished, but this seems to be taking a page from arcsys in that they are borrowing heavily from a 2d sprite aesthetic which often has lighting rendered individually on a character rather than as the environment dictates. There’s a reason xrd was able to fool so many people into believing they were looking at 2d sprites until the camera rotated. I think while the lighting may not be finished the choice to render it in the style they are might be.

I would be very surprised if Project L gets away with how close Ahri is to Menat from SFV. If you are unfamiliar with Menat, she's a long range fighter who uses a crystal ball and uses dive kicks for mobility. She also has the most iconic walking animations in fighting game history and Ahri's walking away animation is pretty close to it.
