The combination of Ifrit typically being an early game summon, awesome endgame summons like Bahamut and the strange summons like doomtrain or knights of the round see Ifrit being overlooked in most games. Seeing him as the central focus for FF16 was great to see. He's always been my favorite and possibly adds to my love for the game.
@@UltimaWeapon20 It technically has. Going by the main timeline the "summon" Ifrit was not present in FF12 but only came in the form of an airship name, but, FF12: Revenant Wings did have Ifrit as a boss and as an available esper that the party can use

An additional detail on Ifrit in FFXIV--it was confirmed in an official short story that the original incarnation in-universe was Ifrita, a creation of Lahabrea's! Seems like an interesting thing to tease at, especially given Phoenix was also created by him and FFXVI put them both into a central role.
I really enjoyed how Type-0 added some unique lore to the summons and delved into their spiritual origins. Seeing them as a race of otherworldy beings contracted with Rubrum and demanding ritual sacrifice made them so intriguing

I absolutely loved this. Did you already do this with Shiva, Rahmu, Odin, and Bahamut. I'd like to see that since due to the way they handled them in 16, which thus far is my favorite Final Fantasy to date

Just beat ff3 (pixil remaster) I unlocked Ifrit but never used the summoner class, but I'm Playing ff4 (psp) right now and Ifrit with Rydia is my go to!
I think the humanoid aspect of Ifrit is more classic to the character than the beastly like form introduced in 8. I loved his design in 15 because it brought back the more humanoid aspect of Ifrit and his Djinn's origins, is my favorite design of him.
It's a bit beyond the scope of this video, but Kingdom Hearts Union Cross also had an Ifrit-themed Heartless as an event boss that takes after the FF10 version of Ifrit.
I know 15 isnt the best game in the series but i think treating the summons like the Greek and Roman gods was the coolest idea, then Eikons in 16 being the next coolest, more original idea.
Cool, lots of iterations I didn't know about from the many spin offs. Thanks for including 11's design this time as well, it's my 2nd favorite after 16 - speaking of which am I the only one who thinks Ifrit has canine-like features to his face in 16? I'm late watching this one as I only just beat 16 last week (going for the Platinum currently)
in Islamic teachings, Djin and Ifrits cannot be visible as fully humanoid, and most of the time would make some parts of them animal like! That's probably why ifirit has hooves in most of it's designs, not to mention the horns.
Great deep dive! Ifrit surely is eikonic 🙂. FFX had the best version of Ifrit for me, but I would say that XVI's Ifrit Risen took his spot in my heart. His design is (hell)fire!!! 😉
@FinalFantasyUnion If you do a Hardest Boss Commenter Edition, will you consider Spectral Keeper from FFX? That boss was always the hardest for me even before Yunalesca, as the Glyph Node Instant-KO Bombs were absolutely devastating and so was the fight in general due to how you had to do your formations to minimize the damage you took from him.
My top 5 favorite designs to Ifrit are from FFIII, FFVIII, FFX, FFXIV, and FFXVI. I love the bestial design more than a humanoid appearance taken in most of the series, as well as Ifrit's connection to Shiva from FFVI, FFVIII, FFXIV, FFXV, and FFXVI. The lastly mentioned also alludes to the bond between Clive and Jill, in a more positive and alluring vibe unlike Final Fantasy 15 with Luna and Ardyn(the former had Clive and Jill as some of it's protagonists, whereas the latter had Luna as a semi-protagonist and Ardyn an antagonist), same goes with Ramuh connected to Ifrit and Shiva in each game's narrative(with another main protagonist of FFXVI Cid, and not technically related to a character but I assume Cor serves as an allusion to Ramuh, you know).
I mean so it’s pretty obvious that 16 has given us the best Ifrit right? Went from being mid to kinda bad, to becoming not only the op protagonist but also the op antagonist of a mainline game
FF Crisis Core finally brings some fanservice for the other side with his rather priminent package. Usually, we only get fanservice in the form of scantily dressed Shiva and various lady characters. Although, FF XVI has the most attractive Ifrit (in Ifrit form).
Hey great video I just wanted to add a few tid bits to the FFXIV portion as it has had some drastic changes. 1. This is the only final fantasy where summoner had gotten a complete rework so initially Ifrit and the other summons were summoned as cuter "egi's" and in the lore you just receive a fraction of their power. That said they used to be used as commandable pets. The job later turned into a more traditional summoner role where Ifrit is technically just summoned for a single higher powered strike, though the element of fire is more just an aesthetic since there is no real magic or elemental damage typing. Link 2.0(A Realm Reborn): ua-cam.com/video/diROOR4VZKg/v-deo.html Link 6.0(current expansion EndWalker): ua-cam.com/video/dAs-xanndTo/v-deo.html 2. Also in 1.o when you battled him, those RPG elements such as magic damage, and elemental damage were present then, even though the summoner job was unfortunately not implemented. This made the fight much different, and though the names of the moves are similar the way the function is drastically different. Again fire is just an aesthetic officially post 4.0, but 2.0+ elemental damage really didn't do much of anything. Link (1.0 Final Fantasy XIV): ua-cam.com/video/0jwtkYk18EI/v-deo.html
Of course XVI had to make Ifrit the ultimate Eikon. Think about the design chosen for XVI. What other creature from a famous legendarium had a furnace for a body? The Balrogs from the Tolkien Mythos. Balrogs were the ultimate demons next to Sauron and Morgoth. Dragons were weaker. Balrog > Dragon. Ifrit > Bahamut.
Sucks that 7 remake isnt a comolete game becuse I'm not gonna be able to play it until the third part is out. I can't play a cliffhanger game, its an ocd thing. It literally makes me uncomfortable. I want to play it, seeing as how I've never played the original (even though I'm 40 i can't play games that look that weak so I'm glad they came out with a remake) but I just can't play a game that doesn't have a complete ending.
Same! If-RIT sounds so much better and I don’t care how Square wants to pronounce it, or if that is how it’s actually supposed to be pronounced, I’m still saying If-RIT because that’s how I read it back in the day. 😂
I dont like how he pronounces Ifrit or Shiva. I prefer [ If-r-it ] instead of [ If-reet ]. Idk how he gets a long "e" sound without a second vowel in the word. Shiva has at least "a" second vowel and I think its pretty to say [Shee-va]. [Sh-i-va] is a reasonable way to pronounce her name yet it lacks the glamorous ring befitting her title as a royal ice queen ("she" sounds more feminine too.).
It's an Arabic word and Ifrit is just one spelling, and one of the only ones that that doesn't imply the if-reet pronounciation. Efreet, Afreet, Afrite are all valid spellings as well, to name a few. It also exists as a male Ifrīt and a female Ifrītah, which I find interesting. The arabic pronounciation is closer to if-reet as well for that matter, if the soundbite on Wikipedia is accurate at least.
This really annoys me and has for years with how the Japanese pronounce things versus how they are spelled. If it's meant to be pronounced Efreet then spell it like that. That's a legitimate spelling of that name. The name Ifrit to me does not hit my brain as Efreet. I'm not an English language scholar or anything but I am a native speaker and from what I know the letter "I" is NEVER pronounced sounding like "eee" ever. But every single Japanese word that I can think of that is spelled in English the letter "I" is pronounced "eee". I'm certain that I'm the only person who could possibly be annoyed by this but that's the case. I wish this wasn't so annoying to me, but it is.
Most languages pronounce the letter "i" like that. English is just weird and inconsistent. In romanized Japanese, that is the only way to pronounce the letter i.
@@Ejohns1004 The letter "e" is typically pronounced like the English "ay." I'm not a linguist or I'd probably know the universal way to depict those sounds. What really stands out to me is that Spanish and romanized Japanese pronounce most letters identically to one another.
It's because the name isn't English, it's Arabic. It doesn't follow the same rules, it's just romanized into English spelling. From google: Ifrit, also spelled as efreet and afrit (Arabic: ʻIfrīt: عفريت, pl ʻAfārīt: عفاريت), is a powerful type of demon in Islamic mythology. Japanese "i" is also pronounced ee, that's just how their language is written into English. For Japanese it's ALWAYS: a = ah e = eh i = ee o = oh u = ooh In fact Japanese is VERY consistent. English is incredibly inconsistent and chock full of spelling exceptions due to sourcing words from all over the place or just not sticking to one way of spelling anything Easy examples: "mood" and "food" rhyme with each other but not with "good". As a native speaker, English honestly makes no sense. Blame English, not the other languages
@@The_One_In_BlackYeah that's where I get messed up because I see something like Ifrit and I pronounce it like short "i" sound with both I's and then Square says the official pronunciation is "ee" and my brain is like "nope". Same thing happened with me when they started voicing the name Vivi. I say it in my head and out loud with short "i" sounds for both I's, but Square comes out with the official pronunciation and it's VeeVee. Again, my brain is like "nope". I know that's the way that name would be pronounced if it was spoken by an Italian speaker but that's the opposite of how I was taught the letter "I" was ever pronounced.
I stopped this video a few minutes in. I cannot focus on what he's saying because he's mispronouncing if-r-it. He's saying if-freet. It has the same effect when he says tee-dis in place of ty-dis. Very sad I'll miss out on great videos. 😬😬😬
Exactly why I deleted and will not playthrough final fantasy 16. The games a ******* joke Starting 30 seconds ifrit turns into sonic the ******* hedgehog

Haven't you done this already
these videos get so funny when the narrator never understands colors lol.
also 23:55 what??? pronounced hog? hawk? what on earth is being said here
Sooooooooooo dumb that the word hell was censored. That's like the word red being censored haha
Eikonic
It's prononced efreet with the letter e being ع, which can't be translated into english
Did he say pronounced hog ?
Like #1k!! XD
Don't you mean... Eikonic?
@@The_One_In_Black like "e"?
@@Ejohns1004 The letter "e" is typically pronounced like the English "ay." I'm not a linguist or I'd probably know the universal way to depict those sounds. What really stands out to me is that Spanish and romanized Japanese pronounce most letters identically to one another.
It's because the name isn't English, it's Arabic. It doesn't follow the same rules, it's just romanized into English spelling. From google:
Ifrit, also spelled as efreet and afrit (Arabic: ʻIfrīt: عفريت, pl ʻAfārīt: عفاريت), is a powerful type of demon in Islamic mythology.
Japanese "i" is also pronounced ee, that's just how their language is written into English. For Japanese it's ALWAYS:
a = ah
e = eh
i = ee
o = oh
u = ooh
In fact Japanese is VERY consistent. English is incredibly inconsistent and chock full of spelling exceptions due to sourcing words from all over the place or just not sticking to one way of spelling anything
Easy examples: "mood" and "food" rhyme with each other but not with "good".
First
The overall way "summons" were handled in 16 was a seriously let down for me.
The games a ******* joke
Starting 30 seconds ifrit turns into sonic the ******* hedgehog
Wonderful video thanks for everything you do
Am I the only one who got the ifrit materia from chocobo farm?
