Dang! Great collection and thanks GMBN for sharing. Two things: 1) Klein’s were made in Western Washington state so mud clearance was definitely a thing, though our mud isn’t as sticky as other parts of the country. B) One of the bikes had Mavic MA40 road rims cut down to 26”-maybe other folks were doing that, but maybe those wheels came from Keith Bontrager? Thanks again for awesome content.
Retrobike.co.uk member here - those paint jobs are way more complex than anyone realises. Not just a couple of colours faded together, there are multiple different colours laid on top of each other to make the final effect you can see. One colour would never look like that on its own. There are a couple of people who restore the paint on old Kleins and they know what order of colours to lay on top of each other. Long waiting lists and very expensive to have repainted - the original paint is still the one to have but due to all the layers they can be hard to touch up effectively.
I used to do a fair bit of airbrushing/custom paint work before my hands went bad and I was fascinated by the paintwork on display here, as you say it's a multi layer fade and it all looks super clean which is no mean feat when working on curved tubing particularly on the insides. One errant stroke, one jolt as you bump your hand or airline against the frame, one spit as a result of a blocked nozzle and you've got to start the whole thing again.
I just want to say thank you to Doddy and Sandy . Seeing all these bikes almost put me into tears remembering my young days dreaming about Klein bikes. That Adroit...Oh My God!!! Thank you again to both of you and the owner of the collection. You have really made my day. Greetings from Spain and thanks again. Waiting for more retro stuff. Cheers!!

I started riding MTB in ‘79 on a Sears Canada catalogue sourced bike. My first REAL mountain bike was a 1987 Miele Aries 550, with a similar blue/green fade and splatter. From ‘90-‘93 I managed a LBS and remember A-Headsets coming to market. Wanna say ‘92, what a revelation.. I mounted one on my Aluminum Wheeler(from Germany I believe, similar to Klein) with full XT and thumbshifters. Weight was 20lbs. What a machine. Keep the fantastic RETRO content coming. Cheers.

It was such a fun, exciting era, pretty much inventing the sport as we went along. This has to be my favourite GMBN video ever! Thanks for sharing your passion for wonderful tech new and old, Doddy!

WOW! Some memories there! My 1980's best buddy and riding partner, gone but never forgotten, had an Attitude in the orange fade, then showed up one day with an Adroit in Gator fade. We were all envious. He was 6'4" so the bikes were XLs. And spectacular! And he kicked our asses on those bikes. The one thing I remember and did not see on this video is a Klein with the rear brake under the chainstays. Jim's Attitude had that. I was a mud collector, but sure cleaned up the back end of the bike. The collector might need to add one of those to the collection....
That's because this collector knows what to avoid like the plague! (I've used this expression like three times this week. Poor form, I realize. Sorry.) He knows what's worth restoring and what's worth dumping on Ebay! The only thing worse than collecting a Klein with a ubrake would be one with BioPace chain rings!!!

Wow, beautiful. I'm in Victoria BC, Canada and the local shop at that time, Pacific Cycles was a Klein dealer and just about daily I went 8n to oogle at the stunning pieces. The Adroit, Attitude and lower end. I recall they had this display of various tubes with the different paint options. So far ahead of others. Internal routing, integrated head sets crazy. So cool to learn William Nealy and Gary Klein were friends. I have "Mountain Bike!" in my hand as I watch this. So cool. And what a collection of truly pristine Kleins. Museum-quality collection! Eye candy for sure!!!
Thank you for the walk down memory lane! Was 16 and lusting after these bikes and parts. Had friends who owned some, cook bros cranks, grafton speed controllers, etc. I had the original M900 XTR crank, rear d, front d and not forgetting Ringle Bubba Hub! Ringle bottle cage in purple. Never seen them all in 1 place... and I always wondered what happened to Dia Compe! Well thanks for clarifying that. Those Tomac ODI grips are classic! Brings back memories of Answer Hyperlite handlebars, Control Tech Bars and stems....
OMG - being a PNW boy Klein was in our backyard. My friends ALL rode Kleins and we all had most of the components including the Paul's brakes and Grafton levers!! Thanks for sharing this... Totally brought me back.

@@rcatkin1 Me too (this is NOT a hashtag!)! I still have them on my Klein MTB and my Breezer Venturi. And they are the best thing you can put your butt on!!
Nice, a bit before my time. For me the ultimate bikes were the Kleins with xt/v-brakes and judy forks, GT Zaskar Le, Kona HeiHei/King Kahuna Ti frames, the Ritchey steel framed bikes, Sunn Steel/ti bikes and Swedish brand Crescent Gram Ti frame. Those were my dream bikes! But Klein was always the nr 1 dream bike.
Hey Doddy! Thanks! That vid brought back the memories of working bike shop and riding in Whistler in 85! Most of those components are new fangled compared to my first Rocky mountain bikes Blizzard! It was pre XTR! I sold it years ago but my brother still has the specialized Rockhopper he bought the same year which is almost all original! I'll send photos of it if you like! Ride ride ride!
I worked in a shop that sold Klein, gator fades, horizon fades, but then there was night storm. I ended up with a night storm quantum road bike. I do remember lusting after an attitude that was gold. So many memories, and way ahead of his time! Let’s just all forget the Mantra.
I have a 97 Klein,attitude comp.Only thing i changed was the cole fork,to a rockshox air fork.Also changed the pedals to flat.It is a XS,it fits me perfect.I will not get rid of it never.Stay safe everyone.☮ x
What an awesome collection. 30 years ago these were the space shuttle and iPhone. Aerospace technology way before it's time. One tech overlooked is the large diameter oversized steering tube. Now found on all high end rigs. The welds, the tube forming, the paint ... all McLaren quality. Thanks for sharing!
That really brings me back. Got a Klein Rascal in '89 and then upgraded to a Mardi Gras Adroit (fill XTR w/mag 21) in '93. LOVED those bikes! Even had the peace sign cable dealon my front brakes and Ringle seatpost. Still have the Adroit frame.
What a great collection! My Kleins go back a couple more generations...Mountain Klein & Pinnacle. Both with WTB Speedmaster brakes and hubs as well as Bullseye Cranks. Thanks for a great video...brought back fond memories of the beginning of mountain biking in Northern California!
Yeah you know your mtb history Doddy, Di-comp indeed, the parts on the Klein's were so ahead of their time & not just klein, most of the components were well ahead to, i still own a crank bro's crankset as well as a bullseye hub, i have only ever seen a Klein Attitude twice in the 40 years of riding , they were rare then & pretty much unheard of nowadays until videos like this shine a light on them, the other bike foe me back then was the Alpinestars mtb which were also rocking back in the day. I am saving this video as this is about as close as i shall get to seeing any Klein's, thank you for the memory lane trip
Most people only got to see on or two in real life and that was either in the shops or at the bike shows. They were ultra rare bikes and they still are. I will my website up soon with all of my Kleins to view.
i have an attitude comp stashed away in the corner of my garage. Its not seen the light of day for so long it would qualify as a barn find. You've inspired me to dig it out , do it up and get riding it...ty!
This brings back many teenage memories. I had a lime green Klein Pinnacle in the 90s. Was the entry level Klein mtb but still a fantastic super light bike. I had Suntour XC pro groupset, Grafton Joysticks cranks in 3D violet, Ringle seatpost in 3D Violet, 1" Chris King threadset headset 3d violet, control tech ti skewers on wheels and seatpost clamp, Specialized Ned Overend barends 3D violet, Zoom stem and bars, purple anodized spoke nipples, Tioga Farmer Johns cousin tyres and Onza porcupines, Rock shox mag21 with longtravel kit... so many amazing memories
Great stuff! In 1989 when I started mtb-ing Klein was my absolute dream bike! In 1991 I purchased a 2nd hand Klein Attitude which after a few years had a small crack between top and downtube. Had the frame hanging in my shop for years, then threw it away. Still regret that...
I know the feeling. I grew up absolutely doing my best to kill myself on a wheeled Flexible Flyer (Flexy Racer). I know I hit 65mph on that thing. I wore out three sets of wheels until the company was sued out of existence. I let it go to the dump. HOW? WHY? WTF????? (I've since obtained two nice replacements. One has been completely refurbished, the second is in waiting...) BUT, when my '85 Crack-N-Fail cracked at the head tube, Cannondale let me Dremel out the serial number from the BB shell and send it to them. I got to keep the frame which had been custom painted by my bike builder friend. Can't part with that piece of history!
Amazing collection!!! I still possess a Klein road bike from the late 80’s in the gator green. With Campy group. It was great, at the time. As you guys said... ahead of it’s time.
An amazing collection. I remember flipping the pages of magazines always lusting after bikes and kits like that. Thanks for the trip in the way back machine.
So pretty!! I always wanted one too! I loved Ringle parts in the 90s..The Kooka cranks that matched my purple Ringle bits were complete junk! Flexy and eventually snapped. I miss that bike! It was a built up Mongoose IBOC that was Burple with purple everything. Sooo 90s
I live in Aberdeen Wa, just up I5 from Chehalis. My uncle Ron worked there so my uncles had a hookup on the top bikes back in the late 80s with the Rascle, then the Attitude in the early to mid 90s, then I got the chance to get in it in 2000 with one of the last Adroit bikes. I love it. I did a xtr build and I am going to do another rebuild on it and take it up to date. Love it
I have a yellow/orange koi color fade Klein Attitude Comp & just love it. Out of all of my bikes, it may very well be my favorite even though it was made 20 something years ago!
First time I've seen one of those colorful Klein bikes last year I was like: That's a gorgeous bike! But wait, why does it have cantilevers and rigid fork? My jaw dropped when I found out how old they are. They look modern, even these days! I'd totally ride one of those.
I had those black CBR cranks (180mm) and a pair of Nuke Proof hubs but with carbon-wrapped hubs on a Rhygin Juke SS back in the day. It had a first generation SID fork without the disc brake tabs - it was the lightest model. That bike was sweet. Two road bikes now; both steel with some carbon bits but no MTBs.
These are just to die for super rare over here in California. I keep my eye out for these all the time. Omg they are so gorgeous, and those original xt parts . My nerd levels are spiking ! Lol thanks guys
I had the Klein Attitude with Syncros stem and bar, Syncros seatpost, Selle Italia Titanium Flite seat, mostly complete Campagnolo Record OR group, RockShox Mag 21 fork and I believe Bontrager Rims with Onza Porcupines. Later I bought Raceface cranks. 😘 Used it as a commuter bike, there for the Campa group 😁.
Loved this episode retro doddy is the best. 90's memories for me sundays at Broadway cycles in epsom cruising round the store drooling over all the kleins, marins and cannondales
Very very nice collection. I loved to see this. I have a few Kleins myself, but none of them is in such a perfect condition. One little correction. Those cable hangers are not chill pills. They are Ringle parts. They were called Mojo, if I remember correctly. Just in case someone tries to find a pair of those after seeing the vid.
Wewill MakeIt I was doubting the ‘chill pill’ thing too, never heard of that. Pretty sure you’re right that those were Mojos, also referred to a ‘Peace hangers’ in some parts.
@@ChlorophyllCrusher There really are hangers that are called chill pills. But they are a different brand (Onza) and they look different. Just like a small anodised pill, basically.
@@wewillmakeit3615 A bit of a late reply, but at least someone noticed that as well that they are Mojo's and not the Chill Pill by Onza. Both iconic parts. But he most don't know the old parts anymore, especially the small custom details.
Bikes from the golden age of mtb with all that fancy, blinky, coloured and hyperexpensive stuff... great times for really individual builds. Good, old times
Wow this brings back memories. I lusted after a Klein for years and then finally bought an Attitude frame in '91with the orange /pink fade. Built it up with Deore XT, purple Cooks Brothers cranks, Ringle skewers and white Onza Porcupine tyres !😍
95 XTR m900. Best components ever made. (Swap out headset for a King though) Still using a rear derailleur on my steel hard tail. I had a rascal, bare aluminum no paint. That frame beat the living tar out of me. Love the Cooks RSR crank set as well. Great walk down memory lane thank you. P.S. Grafton speedtrap pedals.
This makes me miss my Klein Rascal that was stolen out of my garage 2 years ago just after I put a bunch of work modernizing it. Great bikes and still fun to ride today.
That sucks. So sorry to hear. There's been a major rash of burglary in my area as of late. Crazy since almost everyone's home these days. Anyway, I posted on my local NextDoor to tell people to LOCK YOUR DAMN BIKES! Just because you think your garage is secure doesn't mean it is. Plus, you already own a damn lock, so USE IT!!! If it's a nice bike, it needs a lock - ALWAYS. No such thing as "a bike too nice to lock up." Just beefed up my basement door lock and am adding shackle guards to my garage with a shit load of bikes and tools. I'm making it VERY HARD for the fuckers to steal my shit!!!
Beautiful bikes thank you for sharing them. I really like the older mountain bikes the style was rapidly changing from year to year. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
I went to the London bike show ,saw all the back to the 90s retro bikes the yetis were thare the kleins were thare,a full collection of gt bikes were thare I was blown away!
I’m speechless! 😶 these bikes are from the period where I started to begin with mountanbiking. My first bike was a Cannondale Super V. I was that time also impressed by the KLEIN mtb’s
I love those bikes! I used to work at a shop and we sold Klein’s. This was after they were purchased by Trek but still bikes were amazing. This is the time that the Mantras were coming out. One special bike owner order was the road bike, Quantum Pro which came with the Dura-Ace and the new deep dish Rolf wheels when at the time came with I believe the Hugi hubs. The sound of those wheels were amazing. The color that bike came with was Chameleon Fire, which was a purple with some metal flakes to make it shinny BUT! When viewed at different angles under the sun had a green tone to it. Amazing bike and right away that bike sold!
I grew up in Northern California during this time when all the Kleins came out. Palo Alto Bicycles and Parks Bicycles in San Francisco were shops to find some of the rarest Kleins. It would've been cool to see carbon fiber Nuke Proof hubs. Haven't seen those in years.
I used to race 2 different Klein Pinnacles back in 1988 & 89 XC in the Northeast USA from Maine down to Maryland and as far west as Ohio. When I would show up for races, guys would gather round wondering what I had. Those were the John Tomac days and Mongoose IBOCS & Specialized were what everyone was riding. There was a guy on our circuit who rode a baby blue YETI and his bike, like mine... got a lot of attention as well
I remember these in the 90's. The Altitude on the left with the pink forks brought back an absolute flood of memories. I raced a Santa Cruz built Bontrager during this era, but always love Klein. MTB's these days couldn't be more boring if they came with a glass of warm milk. Stay well, everyone.
Evans Cycles in Wandsworth, had a Gator Linear Fade Adroit in their shop window with Campagnolo Record OR in the 90's. It was the maddest bike I had even seen and costs ££££!! I used to see all the Attitudes and Adroits in the London Bikes shows or certain bikes shops if you were lucky. I remember there was a bike shop in Whitechapel that have two Gator Fade Attitudes on the shop floor. I was only 16 at the time and I couldn't afford any of them. I wish I could go back in time because I now I can afford to buy 5 or more!!! Klein have always been my number 1 bikes and always will be. Just owning a Gator Linear Adroit frame would make me happy to look at every day.
Wow did this bring back memories! I used to own 4 KLEIN'S, now still have 3, always regretted selling the pristine ADROIT, all original with XTR. Still have one road bike that was custom made after getting hit by a car while riding a KLEIN QUANTUM, it has only the KLEIN name on it. Another one, I bought only the frame and fork, that I built up myself. And finally a RASCAL. Used to know and photograph Tinker Juarez and Sara Ellis when they rode for KLEIN in the early 1990's.
Been out on my Klein Attitude Comp Disc 3 times this week - Still a great bike. Shame what Trek did to the Klein and the 'Harikari' they appeared to push upon Gary Klein. Sad really....
@@oreocarlton3343 I don't know the intimate details, but they did what every parent company does to a brand they acquire: dilute it to shit. First, the welds changed and were obviously not finished to Klein's standards. Second, the spec changed. Third, they started diverging from what make Klein special. Over the next few years they were just rebranded tReks. Diluted the brand so far it was worthless. Just like Bontrager, and Lemond, and who else? OH YEAH, GARY FUCKING FISHER! Trek, you SUCK! You are a soulless bike company that has been a tag-along for your entire existence. The ONLY thing you innovated was the OCLV (which was just a poor-man's Kestrel anyway). But that ship sailed a LONG time ago (as did your druggie athlete), so you really have NOTHING to offer the industry. Totally sucks that this happens with regularity. Buy the hot stuff when it's independently owned before the parasites take over.
For me, although the early 90's models (as shown) are the still the most collectible bikes, I personally love the 1995-1996 models as being at the very pinnacle of Gary Klein's design ingenuity. Still have a Pulse II and Team Attitude,
I once owned the first Fisher Pro Caliber. It was also press fit BB bearings and one piece bar and stem, and 3 colour fade paint job. Wish I still had it.
Utterly beautiful. Other makers look and weep. Beautiful welds sanded down, thick lustrous paint with decals under the clear coat. Those components alone are fantastic. Everyone lusted after a Klein. The road bikes were nice but the mtb s nicer.

Ride ride ride!
quite a stunning collection! the paint jobs on those bikes is next level.
And now, please, please, please, do an episode on Fat Chance as well!
I worked in a shop that sold Klein, gator fades, horizon fades, but then there was night storm. I ended up with a night storm quantum road bike. I do remember lusting after an attitude that was gold. So many memories, and way ahead of his time! Let’s just all forget the Mantra.
I have a 97 Klein,attitude comp.Only thing i changed was the cole fork,to a rockshox air fork.Also changed the pedals to flat.It is a XS,it fits me perfect.I will not get rid of it never.Stay safe everyone.☮
x
What an awesome collection. 30 years ago these were the space shuttle and iPhone. Aerospace technology way before it's time. One tech overlooked is the large diameter oversized steering tube. Now found on all high end rigs. The welds, the tube forming, the paint ... all McLaren quality. Thanks for sharing!
That green blue gator fade paint job got my heart racing. Those paint jobs make the bikes look fast while sitting still.
Doddy! The rear entry dropouts! Lighter, stronger, stiffer, easier wheel changes! I used to work in a shop that sold Klein in the late ‘80’s
What a great collection! The Grafton pedals are speed traps if I recall correctly.
HeartSpacers yeah, Speedplay was it’s own company. They made the Frog pedals.
Had to pause at 17:00. ABSOLUTE BEAUTY!! Well done and thank you
Love this! Did my first retro restore this year and I'm hooked.
9:30 Grafton Speed Trap pedals - amazing setups btw - up! :-) love the re-entry levers
Who else remembers a childhood drooling over these bikes while flipping through bike magazines?
Great memories from my peak years of mountain biking. Excellent collection!!
One has been completely refurbished, the second is in waiting...)
BUT, when my '85 Crack-N-Fail cracked at the head tube, Cannondale let me Dremel out the serial number from the BB shell and send it to them. I got to keep the frame which had been custom painted by my bike builder friend. Can't part with that piece of history!
So cool. Raced an attitude in 91 and 92 in both DH and CC. 22lbs and held together..Ahhhh the good ol days..
What a lovely video, thank you. Keep up the excellent work and please let us see more of Doddy nerding out over some beautiful museum pieces.
Amazing collection!!! I still possess a Klein road bike from the late 80’s in the gator green. With Campy group. It was great, at the time. As you guys said... ahead of it’s time.
Great
15:18 Sandy had to take over, so that Doddy could finally pick up his jaw off the floor... seriously though: amazing collection.
True!
@@gmbntech To be fair anyone who wasn't gobsmacked by that collection has no soul at all.
Klein new for me. Fascinating. Great story board. Great film shots. Clear, snappy, engaging. Great production. Good stuff.
Sooo 90s
Wow what a jaw dropping retro drooling episode Doddy and GMBNTech 😎
Some extraordinary nice bikes and the colours 👊🔥🔥🔥
Awesome stuff #GMBNTech
That orange fade paint job is amazing. Absolutely beautiful.
The Moonrise Attitude or the Sunburst Adroit?
Love these KLEIN bikes! I had a KLEIN MANTRA RACE in RED, loved it even though it wasn't a "pure" Klein. Thanks for the vid...
I remember having pictures from MBUK magazine of numerous Kleins on my bedroom wall. Even now they look absolutely stunning!
First time I've seen one of those colorful Klein bikes last year I was like: That's a gorgeous bike! But wait, why does it have cantilevers and rigid fork? My jaw dropped when I found out how old they are. They look modern, even these days! I'd totally ride one of those.
Really does look great even the lettering style. Im old enough to remember all these components when they were new!😂Started mtbing 30 years ago.
What a flashback! Work of art in the frame and components.
Remember Klein from 30 years ago.… The holy grail/unicorn of mountain bikes. Dreamed of getting one. Never managed it. So beautiful.
Extraordinary! Loved these back in the day, when 7sp XT Hyperglide launched I had the first set, Hyperglide was such a revolution. Long live Flites!
Still have it??? I'm sure you don't, so where did it go???
@@dudeonbike800 No sold it late 90s , regret it now!
No such thing as "a bike too nice to lock up."
Just beefed up my basement door lock and am adding shackle guards to my garage with a shit load of bikes and tools. I'm making it VERY HARD for the fuckers to steal my shit!!!
Less than 2 mins in and i've peaked already and have started to lick my screen.
Gary Klein did make some beautiful bikes!!! This is a great collection!!!
Awesome video! That Klein collection is insane!
Nah, Kleins were never the same after tRek bought 'em. Damn shame.
I grew up in Northern California during this time when all the Kleins came out. Palo Alto Bicycles and Parks Bicycles in San Francisco were shops to find some of the rarest Kleins. It would've been cool to see carbon fiber Nuke Proof hubs. Haven't seen those in years.
Remember drooling over an Adroit in purple fade that used to sit in Harry Halls in Manchester.
There was a guy on our circuit who rode a baby blue YETI and his bike, like mine... got a lot of attention as well
I cant breathe, there is not enough retro stuff on this channel
nobody did a cooler paint job than Klein, and those mission control bars / stem combo.....SICK
What happened?
Buy the hot stuff when it's independently owned before the parasites take over.
stunning bikes... I lusted after these in the early 90s... settled for a white trek 950 which i loved.. :)
For me, although the early 90's models (as shown) are the still the most collectible bikes, I personally love the 1995-1996 models as being at the very pinnacle of Gary Klein's design ingenuity. Still have a Pulse II and Team Attitude,
What a beauty collection, thanks for sharing. Makes me think about what other bikes the collector will collect.
Love Kleins. I first learned of them when Tinker Juarez was their factory rider. Gorgeous, forward thinking bikes/designs.
I once owned the first Fisher Pro Caliber. It was also press fit BB bearings and one piece bar and stem, and 3 colour fade paint job. Wish I still had it.
Amazing episode! Love the retro bikes. I need to go to that mtb museum in Marin, CA.
Utterly beautiful. Other makers look and weep. Beautiful welds sanded down, thick lustrous paint with decals under the clear coat. Those components alone are fantastic. Everyone lusted after a Klein. The road bikes were nice but the mtb s nicer.
