Our production company was offered this movie about 4 years ago and so I had the privilege of seeing an older draft of the script. Unfortunately, some of it was significantly more frightening than what we get in the final film. Some differences include: (SPOILERS obviously):
    - It wasn't originally worms in the Gus sequence but SPIDERS. Played much scarier on the page. I'm sure they changed it for logistical reasons.
    - Rather than the Lilly's head splitting during the chaos, she fully transforms into the demon. This is an instance where I probably prefer the film version, as fully seeing the demon in it's complete form is risky to pull off.
    - The whole end hallucination/flashback sequence was much longer. More flashbacks. Including one where Jack ends up in the ambulance with a dying Christou who tries to speak but bile spews from all his orifices. Soon the ambulance itself fills with bile.
    - During the scene with Jack with his dying wife in the bed, her face turns into the demon, imploring him to finish the sacrifice. Again, much scarier on the page than what we get in the final film.

While cool hearing all that, I'm so glad they didn't go with any of those points and made the changes they did. Especially seeing Christou in the hospital bed. That doesn't make sense as a flashback or vision because Jack wouldn't have been there. Especially glad they didn't do a full demon transformation, the split head at the end looked fuckin awesome

Also, I like the cult aspect to it. The Bohemian Grove was alluded to. It's the kind of suspense horror I like where it's like an episode of Creep Show. I gave it a shot.

I watched this at the cinema and I know films like this gotta struggle to get funding and take what they can get, but literally people in the audience were laughing at how many production companies and other organisations were involved with this. I think they thought it was a joke part of the movie. Anyway I really wanted to like this movie but it was extremely pretentious and paraded itself as quasi intellectual, but really it's plot and beats were so obvious and I hate being spoon-fed information. The massive exposition dump at the start could have been completely done away with and any information in there sprinkled throughout. A great concept but totally a missed opportunity. The main actor was excellent though.

So wrong, the first two acts had me gripping my seat and my heart beating like a drum. The absence of spectacle is what takes hold, remember a little movie called The Exorcist? Does that movie suffer for the absence of in your face horror? I loved Late Night With The Devil, bringing back tension over cheap jump scare culture, this movie gets it. It’s the absence of jumps, the absence of in your face desperation scares, the absence of modern day horror movie cliches that make it so compelling.

I loved this movie, saw it this week. I do agree on some points - SPOILERS!!!
What was up with the skeleton guy? They really focused on him, and even though he showed up in the end with the Grove cult, i dont know if he was part of it, or just a creepy dude in the audience. The demonic scenes were excellent, the multi layered voice was sooo creepy in the theater, i just wish they'd stayed with that longer. When Lily stared straight into the camera even while being interviewed by Jack? CHILLS. That actress knocked it out of the park!!!!

The skeleton man, the devil, and the ghost in the audience were a few possible members of the fictionalized version of the Bohemian Club. The tension and suspense started early on, with the skeleton man saying absolutely nothing in the audience when approached. Lily's character was flat-out creepy from the second she skipped onto the stage, and her lengthy stares into the camera and outrageous laughter during Carmichael's hypnotism were Oscar-worthy. Jack's Faustian deal with the devil was with powerful people at 'The Grove' to save his show. This is a 9/10 film that many people do not understand at all.

But I thought the young girl was surprisingly good. Primarily in her "awkward" moments. When she was looking for the right camera, her weird smile, her small ticks (like her shoulder movements). They said no one lost work from it here, but in the future, it could be used more because “well LNwTD used it, what’s the harm” and it could *eventually* get to the point where artists and actors lose work.

Just got to watch this last night on shudder and I loved the whole vibe of the 70’s it really did feel like it was set back then with all the edits and visuals. I also loved the ending I was expecting it go to a different direction but I loved what they did with the ending. Wish they would have explained him and the grove and how it really connects but It kept me engaged the entire time

9/10. I showed this to my buddy who is really into classic film and fairly cynical of modern movies and he was asking questions about the ending in a good way.
Refreshing to see releases like this in todays over produced, CGI orgy, cookie cutter plot market.
Definitely will be a cult classic in the coming decades.
If you like horror, I’d also recommend the overlooked “Shining” sequel, “Doctor Sleep”. Also fresh imo.

This does sound interesting, that's for sure. With this select theater thing though, considering it already is quite the voyage to even get to the nearest theater to me, chances are I'm probably going to have to wait for it to hit Shudder, price you pay for living in the middle of Parts Unknown, but does sound interesting enough, I'm sure I will. Anyways, thank you, Cody, did enjoy your video.

I haven’t seen this movie but it kinda reminds me of a British Halloween special that aired and a lot of people thought it was true life called Ghostwatch

The _only_ aspect about this movie that I liked was the aesthetic, the 70's, retro setting. That was the only thing convincing about it as a whole. The rest of the movie was utter shrock, _especially_ the ending.
Great review, though! You gave some points I hadn't considered!

This movie didn't scare me but I have to accept that it is Very Entertaining and fun. I will buy the blu-ray. Yes there's some dumb CGI but it merged well with the 70s look.

I loved this movie. No doubt it’s an acquired taste but the 70’s nostalgia was right up my alley. The ending was ambiguous and confusing but I’m sure that was the intent.

Just saw it. Interesting concept. It does start slow, the climax was not satisfying . However, this wasn’t exactly scary, just fun.

Ya that worm coming out of the gus's eye was not made to look real or even good it was clear to me that it was a throwback to practical effects and makeup of the 70s and 80s.

Saltburn is 4:3 as it gives more verticality to a frame. Emerald used it to showcase the grand scale of the grounds of the manor and university.
