    We had a blast documenting the flying capabilities of the E-Flite Turbo Timber Evolution 1.5m. She’s a proven back-country bush flying and mild 3D flight capable design with some updated features we were happy to see incorporated in the new model.
    Do you enjoy flying your Horizon Hobby Timber? Let us know! 🛩☁
    -----------------------------------------------------
    We fly our Turbo Timber Evolution fully stock minus a simple change: a 13x4 two bladed prop with the spinner from the original red timber. This prop truly increases the power-to-weight and reduces the strain on both the motor and ESC. We tested several different props alongside the stock 3-bladed 11x7 for full throttle static thrust and what they each pulled at this power setting on the ground.
    -Stock 11x7: 52 amps
    -12x6: 45 amps
    -12x8: 52 amps
    -13x4: 41 amps
    The 13x4 was the clear winner in that it provided the lowest load on the electronics but with the larger diameter allowed for great vertical lines and a decent punch out of hovering. We have our timer set at 5:30 on the throttle timer, fly it hard 3D/acro and land with 3.8-3.9 volts per cell. This is light years better than the original blue Turbo Timber.
    Our set up:
    - Battery (affiliate link): rcbattery.com/...
    -AR620 SMART Receiver (no AS3X/SAFE) with reverse thrust set up
    -Moved all control linkages to the furthest out hole on the servo arms and closest in on the control arms for max mechanical deflection
    -Battery as far back as it will go (aft strap is wrapped around the very front end of the battery)
    -13x4 APC thin electric two blade prop

      @@TailHeavyProductions can I ask you something please. So the tte has quite a slow roll speed. Does the original timber take the same amount of time to do the same left roll, right roll? You say max throw always no matter what, does this mean you also got to the wing servos to do so on the tte ailerons ? Have you managed to speed up its roll rate at all? Just wondered, I’m guessing with the tte having quite a large wing area you can’t make much difference but it does have me wondering as my tte takes enough time to roll right over. Thanks

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  2 роки тому

      @@katrinatrafford5104 The OG red Timber, blue Turbo Timber, and TTE all have the same wing, and all have the same roll authority for the most part. It's a longer wing span with smaller aileron surfaces on these Timbers so a slower roll rate, yep. We just maxed out our roll servo travel and left it at that. If you're looking for a snappy roll rate, these planes aren't gonna be your best bet. We enjoy the modest roll because it keeps you on your toes and challenges you more.

    Nice flying,
    My biggest issue with my TTE is getting the darn thing down, it just wants to float forever. I'm running a 4 cell 3300mAh pack just to add weight and try to get it to sink as I have having to dive it to the ground then try to scrub speed (nice slip on a couple landings scrubbing speed).
    I'll give my 2200mAh packs a try one of these days.
    Also like the 13x4, I'll give that one a ty on the watt meter and see if I like the performance.
    I just put the floats on mine for winter snow flying but haven't been flying for a couple weeks due to -30C temps here. The floats worked great on my Timber-X last winter though so expect the same on this plane.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! You WANT airplanes to be light, not be heavy. I’d strongly suggest against purposely adding weight to any airplane. Try getting closer to the backside of the power curve on final and slowing down your approach speed/AOA. It should be more than manageable. Floating is caused by excess speed on final.

    • @CR5rc
      @CR5rc 2 роки тому

      @@TailHeavyProductions I only add weight as battery capacity when I feel the airframe has plenty of wing and power to carry it, never lead unless there are no other options.
      Slow speed and power curve are no problem if I have a long clear approach, I can float it in hanging it off the prop at walking speed, it's just those tight landings it's hard to drop altitude quick then get rid of the speed to be able to get it back into a nose high attitude without gaining a bunch of altitude back. The plane just floats too well, lol.

    That was some very impressive STOL/Bush flying. I am surprised you didn't have the slats on which, except for the hovering, would I believe have improved the STOL/Bush performance of the TTE.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  2 роки тому +9

      Thank you! Every Timber we've owned we have never used the slats for two reasons.
      1: They are useless added weight (in the business of defying gravity - save any and every gram you can)
      2: Aero engineering perspective. At the reynolds number of an R/C airplane wing (take a peek at reynolds number online if you aren't familiar), slats are practically useless and don't make any noticeable difference in slow flight characteristics like slats would on a full-scale sized wing. With small R/C wings, what makes a difference for STOL is increased camber, NOT adding slats. We have flight tested timbers flying them the same way in this video with and without slats. We didn't feel or notice any improvement and thus decided to save the weight.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @BillKisel
      @BillKisel 2 роки тому

      @@TailHeavyProductions Thanks for the info even though most of it went over my head.
      Turbo Timber I was given has the slats on so that's all I know. On my UMX turbo Timber I'm currently flying without the slats because I broke them in a crash and removed them. Except for inverted I like the way my UMX turbo Timber flew with the slats.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  2 роки тому +1

      @@BillKisel No problem! Take a look at some articles online on reynolds number as well as articles on camber and how it can affect flight characteristics. We are planning to dig a bit deeper into these topics in some future videos on bush flying though, so stay tuned!

    • @CR5rc
      @CR5rc 2 роки тому +2

      I added the slats to my Timber-X and noticed a drastic decrease in flight speed, most maneuvering was unaffected for the most part. Inverted needs a little more down elevator, slow speed may be a little more stable, hard to say for sure.
      I recently added the slats to the Turbo Timber Evo, again flight speed is reduced, and unsure about any improvement in low speed handling. It always came in at walking speed so it's hard to judge if there was a real improvement.
      For me it was just the increase in drag, if you watch my videos of the TTE you'll see me needing reverse to get it stopped before the end of my flying area, I haven't got a fresh video with the slats but I'm now getting it on the ground and stopped in about 2/3 the distance I needed before.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  2 роки тому +1

      @CR5 Nice! Yeah we still believe based on how wings work at this small of a wing size that they aren’t worth adding and don’t do much at all. Keep the plane light. Our video should prove that.
      Checked out your video: nice flying! You definitely should be able to stop without reverse there. Just try and work on nailing starting a stable approach at a comfortable slow speed and keep it there the entire way down. Fun stuff to practice! Happy Landings! 😀

      Slotted flaps are always going to give you a better end product than plain flaps for sure. On a deeper level, it's allowing high pressure air from the bottom of the wing to flow through the slot in the flap to the upper surface air which helps delay separation on the boundary layer of the wing. More lift without a ton of drag, unlike a plain flap that gives more drag than overall added lift. -Zach
