A lesser known restaurant in the midst of the cluster of beautiful temples in Ponda taluka, which serves authentic, village-style Goan cuisine, is Khedekar family restaurant. It is less than 5 minutes drive from Shri Mangueshi temple and Shree Mahalsa Narayani temples, and barely 10 minutes from Shree Shantadurga at Kavlem.
Besides the setting in a quiet green village, seeing all things that Goans love painted on Khedekar’s walls, is so inviting. This restaurant celebrates all things Goan through the art on its walls painted by the artist Himalaya Gaude. We quickly decide to sit at one of the outer tables where we can watch the world go by. Besides the outdoor area, there is an AC section too.
Our waiter Harendra Singh Jat, is from Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh. He is very sweet, helpful and knowledgeable about Goan food
Today, Maria is having Goan chilli chicken (Rs 160), Viola is having tarle (sardines) thali (Rs 140) and I am having bangdo (mackerel) thali (Rs 150).
We feel happy to see ukde xit (Goan parboiled rice) on Khedekar's thalis. All the places here should realise the value of making ukde xit (Goan parboiled rice). It's so much more tasty with the fish curry.
In fish thalis/rice plate, ask if isvon (kingfish), muddoshi (lady fish), chonak (giant sea perch), modso (lemon fish), sungta (prawns), mankyo (squids), lepo (sole fish), vellio (anchovies) or kalundara (pearl spot fish), are available on the day.
Khedekar restaurant also serves chicken starters like chicken dry fry, pepper chicken and chicken 65 (Rs 190 each), veg starters like mushroom rawa fry (Rs 150) and mushroom Goan chilly (Rs 160), Chinese and North Indian dishes. The Goan chicken cafreal (Rs 200) here is highly recommended, as is the xacuti (served only on Wednesdays and Saturdays)
This village taverna is a lovely place to hang out with your good friends, chatting about everything under the sun while you wait for your meal. Lot of Maharashtrians come to Mangueshi temple. They will love this place.
