    Extinct elephantids of the genus Mammuthus are commonly referred to as mammoths. They belong to the group of trunked mammals known as proboscideans. Mammoths of all kinds sported long, curving tusks, while those native to the Arctic wore thick coats of hair. From the Pliocene period (roughly 5 million years ago) into the Holocene period (roughly 4,000 years ago), these animals flourished across the globe. They belonged to the family Elephantidae, together with the two living genera of elephants. The current Asian elephant is the mammoth's closest living relative, not the African elephant.

      Important is that they are elephants, not just relatives of them

    You might wanna rewrite the script because there is no way a Steppe Mammoth could weigh 10000 metric tonnes. 10 metric tonnes would be more accurate 😵‍💫

    The jefferson's Mammoth and Imperial Mammoth are just older and out dated names for the Columbian Mammoth.

    • @indyreno2933
      @indyreno2933 9 місяців тому

      That is incorrect, the columbian mammoth is found only in Canada, the jefferson's mammoth is the most basal of all the four north american mammoth species, while the imperial mammoth is native to the mainland United States and is more closely related to the channel island mammoth than it is to the columbian mammoth.

      @@indyreno2933Completely wrong. All North American mammoth species have been synonymized with Mammuthus columbi with the exception of the pygmy mammoth

    • @indyreno2933

      @GalvyTheTom, nope, the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is more closely to the steppe mammoth (Mammuthus trogontherii) than it is to the north american mammoths, which are actually four separate species, with the Jefferson's Mammoth (Mammuthus jeffersonii) being the most basal of the North American mammoths, then followed by the Columbian Mammoth (Mammuthus columbi), leaving the most recent split to be between the Imperial Mammoth (Mammuthus imperator) and the Channel Island Mammoth (Mammuthus exilis).

      @@indyreno2933 Doesn't matter, all of the native North American mammoths of the mainland are synonyms of the Columbian mammoth (the Jeffersonian mammoth aligns well as a hybrid between M. columbi and M. primigenius, for one). Mammuthus exilis IS valid as a dwarf population, but the mainland species are all the same.

    • @indyreno2933
      @indyreno2933 8 місяців тому

      @GalvyTheTom, the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) and columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) cannot interbreed, the former is more closely related to the fairly similar steppe mammoth (Mammuthus trogontherii), therefore the jefferson's mammoth (Mammuthus jeffersonii) is actually its own species and the most basal mammoth species native to North America, mainland north american mammoths are paraphyletic to the channel island mammoth (Mammuthus exilis), the columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) is only found in Canada and the Northern United States, the imperial mammoth (Mammuthus imperator) is native to a majority of the United States and Northern Mexico and is a separate species and is most closely related to the channel island mammoth (Mammuthus exilis).

    Why are we going to revive the woolly mamooth and not the Columbian mamooth
