Look at Indian kids' ambition... NO ONE says they want to be a musician, actor or even an athlete!! United States... kids are wanting to be the next Tom Cruise or Michael Jordan. Chinese and Indian kids are working hard to be the next Khwarizmi or Einstein.

    • @als2cents679

What people don't understand in the US is that there are only of the order of 1000's of people who can rise to the level to be even in the same ballpark of a Tom Cruise or a Michael Jordan, who make 7-figure salaries, while there are literally of the order of 100's of millions (about 5 orders of magnitude more, for those that understand Math) of jobs that pay 6-figure salaries in those professions that the Indian kids mention.
Yet for some unknown reasons all the kids here in the US associate kids who try for those professions with adjectives such as "hard", "nerdy", "boring", and "uncool". What you get as a result is what you see in US society.
Kids not interested in taking on hard subjects such as "Math" and "Science". The few that form the upper echelons of the arts, music, sports, etc. that are celebrities making millions are all Americans, while the backbone of society that keeps everything running and are the "hard sciences" are all filled by very well-to-do but non-celebrity folks who are immigrants from places like India, China, etc. Why is anyone surprised at the outcome?
If you are superficial, lazy, and don't want to put in the hard work and care more just about the social aspects to be in the in-group in HS, then this would be the expected outcome and immigrants such as Indians would be the highest groups by average income in the USA. To explain for those weak in Math, when you compute averages, having most people making a lot of money will beat having a few making an obscene amount of money while the vast majority of the rest are not doing too well. The latter also leads to great income inequality which we are seeing today in the US. Everybody sees the one Michael Jordan and wants to become him, no one sees the tens of thousands who tried to become him, got nowhere and didn't amount to much more in their life, since they spent all their time on sports and neglected the academic persuits.

I said yes, I know.(In fact I knew those 3 mark mistakes before results) She said "Ok, good. Good night" and went to sleep.

She had a dream to be a lawyer but got married after her graduation. But my mom would wake up the entire night while i am studying. She would make me breakfast at 4 AM. she has an active watch on my studies. I have never got below A+ in any exam. It is not because of me but my mother.

I can't speak for other countries but in India only if you get good grades then you are respected in the society. Or else forget trying to be treated as a person with feelings.
The education in India and China is mostly because of the social pressure and its so hard to reach the society's expectations.

Dear Mr Ballard I live in the UK and have watched all of your videos.Unfortunately the public education system here is just as bad as in America . There are no end of year exams as such ,children just move through the system based on age and not academic ability.I have had to remove my children from school just so that they can get an education. When I think it is parents who are to blame because most take no responsibility for their children's future and leave everything to teachers and schools.

These are all side issues. It is just the lack of will. There can never be any shortage of ocean, there can only be a shortage of fish. Speaking only for myself, I can honestly say, I have never lacked in the ability to be excellent, but always lacked in the desire to excel. Learning has nothing to do with competition, and self improvement is a good thing. By this I mean there is never any lack of resources, just the lack of individuals with the desire and the will to put those resources to good use.

America has facilities so kids don't generally go through struggle indian kids go through. Only a good job can end their struggle for basic needs. Also indian kids look after their whole family including parents so they have responsibility from the beginning. So its not surprising that they are so competitive or Indian parents put pressure on them to get good marks. When your poor or middle class in indian you'll know the struggle. Privileged people have the opportunity to spent time hobbyto think about their hobby. #peace

Fair points. Aside of School education, college education in India tends to be quite broad and overly bookish lacking applicational knowledge and know-how. Indians tend to be strong on theory, but weak on application. This is where I think western education excels. India needs to move to that model and I think the steps taken are encouraging, but there is a long way to go. The top 10-20 colleges have moved to that model, but the vast landscape of colleges still relish their ancient systems unfortunately.
This is where Indian education fails - after a good school footing / foundation, the college system flounders. I don't know about Chinese, but seems like Chinese too are working up on the same way.

Indian education system is not being supported that much by the govt. which actually ought to be(in terms of GDP spending)...but it's not because govt. Is not willing to...but mainly due to other reasons like geopolitics, comparatively less gdp, poverty, health, etc. are equally demanding issues. If India could have wealthier like any first world country,She would be superpower in education system within 2/3 decades.(it's not arrogance but a strong rational belief)... because starv for education and related respect is in the blood of Indians. It is recognized by the world even when we aren't concentrating at our full energy and intensity on the sector.

Thus, the "rejects" from China and India will probably winding up with our "blue collar" jobs.

I am from India. I arrived in this great country in year 2004. I started in 8th grade and Keith is right. American high schools are pathetic and not globally competitive. First, I was stuck in those ESL (English second language) classes. I begged the administrator to get me out of it. I knew English but I wanted to interact with other American students to improve my speaking and adopting the accent. Instead they held me in those ESL classes to train other Indians that joined high school after me. Why on earth would I interact with my fellow Indians in English language?
They finally got me out of ESL classes when I was in 12th grade. By that time, I improved my speaking/writing/reading abilities by playing on-line video games. I never had to take a backpack or bring books to my house because I was able finish all the homework in class or during lunch. And speaking of white American kids, they will have no interest in blue collar jobs since the most high schools don't even have those type of classes. For example, my high school had 3 to 4 different language courses that you can choose from. However, the school never had any extra courses that helps you learn the basics of plumbing, custodian, constructing etc. School district always had "lack of funds" excuses every single year.
