It's not in the book. I have read both 2033 and 2034, nothing was mentioned about the war starting in the middle east. If it wasn't mentioned in these books, then I am sure 2035 also doesn't explain it

Well, actually in the story the book depicts, Artyom and his mother both made it into metro during the bombing. They lived at timiryazevskaya until he was five. That station was overrun by a swarm of hungry rats, with only a handful of survivors, including Artyom, and the man who would become his stepfather, Sukhoi, or uncle Sasha. Artyoms mother did however beg Sukhoi to take him. She was not fortunate enough to escape, and was eaten by the rats with the rest of timiryazevskaya.
in the book the reason is largely forgotten as many of the people got underground alive at the time are dead or were poorly informed as to why in the first place

In the first game you couldn't survive w/o a gas mask (one of the main things you were doing in the game was collecting gas mask filters, and replacing broken gas masks), so the guys who went outside (not many of them), had to be fully covered, an had to wear gas masks.

The metros were built to defend people from bombs and radiation, but to do that, the doors have to be closed before the bulkheads.
