- Back in 1982, The Washington State Department of Transportation drove East on WA SR-16 and recorded video to document the highway. This was part of a project that photographed/videotaped the states highways every couple of years. This video now resides at The Washington State Archives who were kind enough to share it.
The title should also include Gorst and Port Orchard.
interesting that last bit of 16 between Union and Sprague looks pretty similar today. But the overpass over the valley is completely different now. It was cool to see the Tacoma Mall there with what I assume was the old theater where I watched Independence Day!
Oh my gosh, this is just about the coolest thing ever. Do you have access to more??? I’ve been living in Tacoma since I was born in 1986 and this is fascinating! I really hope you have more!
In case you missed it, a video going westbound was posted a month or two earlier on this channel.
These really capture an interesting period as SR 16 was in the midst of transitioning from surface streets to a major freeway. There have been changes the entire way from Gorst to Tacoma.
Back when you could get onto 5 south off 16 with ease. Now it’s just beyond stupid
When did they add the other part of the narrows bridge?
If you're talking about the new Narrows Bridge moving eastbound, that would be that one. It was finished in July 2007.
