The Monarch is the flagship Benson Amp. It features a unique British-American switch, simple yet highly versatile controls, and perfect range of power to be used both cleanly and pushed on the stage and studio without wearing out its welcome.
The circuit design is 100% original, or actually maybe just a combination of 30 different amps Chris likes plus a few ideas of his own. Either way, the resulting amplifier could be, and often is, the end of your search for perfect guitar tone.
The Monarch was designed to make you consider ditching your drive pedals (though it takes pedals like a winner). It was designed to have harmonics when clean, and clarity when it’s pushed. It is designed to transition from clean to compressed to distortion with a complete lack of harsh harmonics or weird resonances. The speaker cabinet is open backed and pine to project sound in all directions like an acoustic guitar…a true tone wood that lends it’s own musicality to the guitar’s sound. The build and finish quality is second to none.
We get asked constantly "What is the Monarch based on?". Translation: "Which 60s/70s amplifier did you clone and tweak when you developed your product?". It's a fair question...most builders do this, and that is fine. We did something new, so there isn't a simple answer. However, we can tell you where the Monarch falls in terms of sound and feel compared to existing amplifiers.
The Monarch was designed to fulfill the needs of players who:
Enjoy a Tweed Deluxe but find it could be lacking in punch and versatility
Enjoy a Top Boost AC15 or 30 but find the upper frequencies a little quacky and grating
Enjoy a Supro Thunderbolt but want more clarity and better harmonics
Think some boutique amps they have tried are too bright and/or lacking a certain something…what is it called…tone that satisfies.

how come nobody EVER goes to the neck pickup???
I can hear that mercury magnetics transformer makes the amp sound amazing!
great demo. first time I've really got to hear what Benson is doing. thanks dude.
no problem, thanks for watching!
This thing sounds great!
Always love the demos Curtis! Killer amp!!!
thanks for the kind words Eric. Killer for sure.
Sounds great. Thanks for another informative and engaging demo, Curtis. Also, your beard game is on point.
ha, thanks. I think. lol
I vote more demos with other chord progressions besides just G. You're thorough man, but I think you should try playing with more variation. I think it would make your demos even better. I'm not talking crazy or anything but just a little, ya know?
wow sounds great !
thanks Ernie.
Like the amp...Love your shirt!
bah ha! umm thanks I guess.
Great demo and awesome amp! Which speaker is in your Benson Cab? And are you using any attenuation (isn't the amp too loud when you crank it?!) ;)
No attenuation used at all. Celestion G12H speaker. It's loud but manageable when you have the treatments on the walls and can hear the amp clearly and not just excessive reverberations and reflections all over the room.
what reverb are you using when you rock the Duo Jet?!
Great demo Curtis, I'm dying to try one of these out! Which reverb pedal are you using?
using the neunaber seraphim here. In the regular wet reverb mode.
also Kyle. you NEED to try one out man. They are fantastic amps.
It's getting to the point of obsessive. I've been moving along some of my lesser-used gear to fund one. Any thoughts on the Monarch combo with the built
in reverb?
I've heard a lot of great things about the combo with reverb. I love what I have, but somedays the built in reverb and portability would be handy.
Can you tell me what speaker is in the cab? I’m Thinking about getting either a monarch or an Erhardt and I’m not sure what speaker I would like best.
Curtis, I love your demos! Could you give me recommendation for a tube combo with good clean headroom? I'm considering a Suhr Bella, Port City Pearl, or Morgan RCA35, but I'm open to any suggestions you might have. I'm looking for a portable, great sounding tube amp to serve as a pedal platform. Thanks!
How much is this?
kinda weird that the "british" voicing is more mid-scooped than the "american" voicing. I guess it's supposed to sound kind of Top Boost-y?
They have a new model the Earhart that gets the Top boost style tones this is more like a non top boost voxy sound.
it's quite mid-scooped for a Normal channel vibe!
Is is possible that you are listening to the American side and thinking this? Because the british side has the mids boosted if anything.
It could just be my speakers or something. The sound was definitely thinner and more mid-scooped on the British side with the volume lower. Once you goosed it, it was a lot more mid-forward. More Marshall-y than Vox-y IMO, a lot tighter than I've ever heard a Vox be.
interesting.
Finally I see your face. I imagined you completely different.
ha. Not as scruffy as it once was.
I imagined you as a very young skinny nerd guy with big glasses. I don't know why.
What a great socialist Mr Benson is to help the cause of the poor working musician by offering such affordable amplifiers, Natanial Daniel would be pround.
