I’m honestly trying to figure out why everyone is so excited about all of this new AI. The things I like about being an ID, the research, the design, creating graphic art to enhance a product, can be done with an AI in seconds. Now I feel like I’ll just be cranking out widgets in a widget factory. Way more productive, sure, but I’ll still be working 8 hours a day either way. Now with AI, the expected output will just go up. The profits of the productivity don’t benefit me, but rather the employer. Plus, what’s to stop employers from offshoring ID work to cheaper countries when high quality material can be easily translated from other languages? Honestly trying to be optimistic, but not liking the trade offs. Any thoughts on this? Is it just the inevitability of progress?

I think fears like that are normal and what you’re describing will likely happen in some cases (work getting sent to lower-cost shops who will likely do lower-quality work). But there will always be a demand for strong IDs who can use their creativity, attention to detail, knowledge about the field and their audience, etc to create way more effective learning experiences. And with AI making it easier for you to be more creative, more efficient, etc, it may give you more time to focus on the aspects of the job you like the most.
Have you had a chance to experiment with the AI tools? You can generate something in seconds but it definitely won’t be great, and the chasm between people who are new to the tool(s) and those who are experienced with them is quite wide. Maybe that chasm will shrink, and it likely will as the AI models get better, but there’s a lot of opportunity for people who are keeping up with what the tools are capable of.
Finally, I wouldn’t worry about any of this stuff happening overnight. Our industry is notoriously slow with adopting new tech (look at xAPI for example).

Yeah, you definitely have to pay for the best features. But most tools offer trials or free tiers to get a feel for things.
