- I was a little bit absent from UA-cam for a while but I'm back now, had so many awesome projects I can't wait to share with you.
This video is special to me because I usually don't share all my Secret Tricks but since you are so supportive and always back me up, I felt the need to give back even more.
To grade this awesome Sony A7siii I used my own LUTS: sellfy.com/alexandru-don/p/so...
Also shout out to Nanlite for always making amazing and affordable products so we can light up any scene!

TLDR: This was the world's longest buildup to simply saying, go use Optical Flow in Davinci Resolve... 🤦♂️
Lol ikr 😂
A good tutorial is when all skill levels can learn from it. Not everyone is as knowledgeable about “everything” you know🙄
@@deejaypile but this isn’t a good tutorial. This is click bait that infers a camera can do something it can’t. 8mins+ of a video that could have been much more informative and authentic, but was produced in the typical method of UA-camr Marketing. There are many “good” tutorials on the real topic which is Davinci Resolve’s Optical Flow.
I'm with you bro. Im an video editor for over 10 years and this load of "tutorials" are always a worstcase for me. Realy, the badest example was that: I had some sound issues and i thought, okay lets google, maybe you are lucky and find another solution. And i ended up on a video, talking about how amazing this new audio feature is.... it was a simple blend.. A BLEND, and was talking for over 10 Minutes! Gosh...
I hate this so much!!!
For those who just want to jump to the METHOD :
Slow down the footage, then choose optical flow (as he mentioned at 6:56).
DONE!
You can do the same thing in Premiere : command R, slow it down at any percentage you want, then choose optical flow at the same window.
But, you need to know that there is limitation of course.
1) it doesn't always work that naturally, you can see some weird "glitch", especially when the moving object is layering in front of a complicated background.
2) You want to sharpen the shutter speed when recording at less than 180degree, otherwise there will be too much motion blur after you slow it down
lol- thanks!
Jesus - thanks. I hate these videos that could be 60 seconds long but they gotta streeeeeetch it the eff out.
The most important trick / rule to get good results is to shoot with a very high shutterspeed. (1/400, 1/800 or even higher if possible). You want to get as less motion blur as possible in each frame. This way the optical flow or flame blending will give best results.
Wow!! that was amazing. When you said 'there is this special trick you can do...' I was expecting it to look kinda ok, but ready to be a little underwhelmed, just because I didn't really think it was possible. But the end result looked insane! Thank you for sharing.
This is amazing! I use DaVinci Resolve as well, will play around other speeds like 480fps and so and try many shots to nail it. Thanks a lot!
Absolutely DOPE
Each one of your clips makes me wanna get into film making also besides programming :D
Thank You man, I will try this for sure
This is a great way. I can't wait to try this
Great trick! Will definitely try this out sometime.
Great, show me the results when you do 🤘🔥
Mate! Been hunting for this trick for over a year! Thank you
This inspired me to try some slo mo in my travel vlogs!!
Amazing!!! Thank you so much!!
Thank you!
this was very helpful 🙏🙏
Amazing trick bro! Thanks!
Amazing, thank you so much for it.
Great tutorial. Gave me the answer and info I need to fake some 1000fps.
Great video and wonderful results! I wish I didn’t take 7 minutes to confirm it was just using optical flow in post.
Great tutorial 👌
Thanks for the vid. Good luck to Roxen! :)
Fantastic tutorial
Thanks for the tut ! One thing thou (for you as a videomaker)4:33 explosion on the mic low end. remember to use highpass filter and take out everything letsay under 90Hz. so you don´t get plosives. Ofc. you wont be able to hear those in a consumer/ home studio speakers, but in professional mixin studio my speakers totally reproduce the impact below 40Hz.. :D -- but that´s just a tip!. thanks again!

!!! amazing. good job.
Love it! thank you new subscriber here. just bought my a7siii
Great Video … thank you for the tutorial
About to join the ecosystem of Sony. Been us I think resolve for a while :) thank you so much for this. Have a few ideas with this and a sushi house
Yes, Sony is such a good ecosystem to be part of. They always innovate🤘
Mad skills man, man skills!
great tutorial.
this is epic!
Thank you 🙏🙏
Man! you are genius
Thank you 🙏🙏
Bomba! Are si Final Cut Pro optical flow 😁Good tips pe shutterspeed si speed up inainte de slow 👍🏻👍🏻
Da, insa la Resolve treaba misto e cu speed warp, acolo e trick-ul 🤘
what film profile did u use? SLOG 3? DO u usually overexpose? Thanks a lot mate love the video!!!
Cheers bro!
well done!!!
Great video.
Magnífica parabéns. Grande abraço Brasil
This is awesome what lights did you use? Can you share the link for them? Looking for a strong light for that 1/4000
Thanks a lot! I used the Nanlite Forza 500 + 120 mm softbox
Which is the best shutter speed in the camera to do this trick? Thanks for the video!
Between 4000-8000
🔥🔥🔥
I like that warping effect
Make sure to:
1)Have LOTS of Light
2)set your shutter speed extremely high to help eliminate video ripping and better super slo mo results (2000shutter speed for 1000fps). Try to avoid hot spots of light as those are the culprits.
3)Increase aperature to at least 2.8.
Why have a low aperture?
@@AB-nb9nk I wrote increase to 2.8 as I don't think it's good to shoot under that for slow motion. It's pretty difficult to shoot an acceptable shot at under 2.8 when the thing you are capturing is moving faster then you can actually see. If you do hit those marks at 2.8 or under it can look unbelievable but for that get a robot.
Just keep hot spots, subjects glasses reflections and LENS Flares out of slow motion footage you intend to fake. It will rip and be unusable
@@cognitoooo great advice man thank you! I was thinking about getting a CPL, would that be helpful to limit those reflections?
@@AB-nb9nk it may be helpful as antiglare does seem like a way to counter reflections but at the same time you might giving yourself more problems. You are losing light now and so that may cause you to make adjustments to your image that you don't want to make. There is honestly so much to say about this.
I recommend being locked off, never allow a flare or a light source to enter or leave the frame. Just let the action happen and trust me it will look cool even though you just feel like you are pushing record sometimes.
Sony A7S III would be pretty good at faking slow motion due to low light strength and 120FPS 4K@16 or 12 bit possible
The less movement the better for faking slow motion. It's really hard to get right for client work.
@@cognitoooo yeah I was thinking about using this in real world scenarios. I’m a videographer for a football team. It seems like this would not be the best use for a shot with variable outcomes and not in a controlled lighting environment.
finally un roman care stie cu ele :) spor la treaba
Bro I learned editor on premier pro and optical flow feature came in new update and I liked it alot then later I switched to davinci and I still kept premier pro for optical flow mainly and few other features that I didn't knew how to do in resolve but I thought optical flow was only available in premiere pro this is so much helpfully for me and I can finally stop using premiere pro and delete it thanks man 🤝
This a really good and helpful tutorial. I just can't figure out the "maths" about the final fps, can you provide your thoughts on that? I'd expect a video approx 4 times longer that the original if going from 240 fps to 1000 fps, or do I get this wrong. Can you also elaborate a bit about the value of using at higher shutter speed to reduce blur? Again, thanks for a great tutorial. I'll definitely subscribe on your channel.
Hello, You are right as you aren't the only one, I think what we can do is to shoot at high frame rate and in extended or with a High shutter speed as mentioned by Dutchground Media to eliminate the Blurriness then after do the Speeding ramping tricks... I will not mind about how much x slow is , as longer I love what I see... lol
Helpfull tutorial. After I tested it several times, I found one problem, there will be waves if the object is too small and out of focus. how to deal with it?
Extremely high shutter speed
Great tutorial! ! One question, how shutter speed used when filming in 240fps? Thanks!
Double 1/400 or more is better less motion blur the better your results
@@Arri. thanks!!
Doooope!! I have to try this in Premiere Pro and see if it works as good as Davinci
Looking too easy 🤔
how do you do it in davinci
In resolve this is a new feature, speed warp does the difference 💪
@Paul Any success in doing this in Premiere?
@@coltonmulligan2550 no. But I successfully switched to DaVinci 😂. You have optical flow in Premiere, but I don't know any Speed Warp option. And for fast moving subjects Optical Flow is not good enough by itself
Очень круто!)
What desk chair is that? it looks cool !
Aweeeesome, can I do it in FCPX ?
it would be really nice if you explain what the optical flow actually does in order to do troubleshooting - when doesn‘t it work?
It calculates the motion of the "objects" and then generate frames based on that. This can give artifacts (warping etc.) if the object is moving too quickly from frame to frame. So, the shorter distance the pixel has to travel, the better the result basically.
Is this the free version or the studio version? Coz whenever I try to choose the speed warp option, a "DAVINCI RESOLVE STUDIO" text appears on the the timeline like a watermark.
Hey there, what lights do you need for a basic 120fps set up tho?
What settings of the S&Q you leave your camera? 240fps Frame rate but the rec frame rate? 24 or 120 for a faster playback?
Should I grade it first for it to work better or can this be effective on log footage..?
davinci gang 💪💪💪
This is great! Could I do the same thing on Premiere Pro??
Yep.
"How to make slow-motion effects
Open the Speed/Duration dialog box, set Speed to 50% and select Time Interpolation > Optical Flow.
For better results, click Effect Controls > Time Remapping and Add Keyframes (optional to reduce and then increase speed within the same clip).
Set speed for your slow motion."
@@kaizen5023 So helpful! Thank you so much! Subscribed your channel!
I just bought the Sony FX three and basically being at the same party as the A7S and Is pretty much the same camera. I am curious to see if this same effect can work with outdoor lighting during the day. For example if I were to shoot hummingbirds at the feeder. Have you tried it all with outdoor conditions? I’m just curious to know and wanted to hear your thoughts
Hello! Did the trick work for you outside during the day?
i dont think it will work on hummingbird.
@@JayNikam I don’t know if it would work either but it would interesting to try than not try at all.
If you can convert 240fps into 1000fps in post, would it be the same process and result if instead of 240 I will just use 120fps and get half like 480fps? FX3,FX30 and A7Siii has 120fps in 4k resolution. I'd rather do it in 480fps which is still good and then have it in 4k resolution
your mama didn't tell you you don't play with foooooddd???? 😩 haha goodvideo!
so if i shot video with 960 fps from my phone i can slow it down even more like 5 times slower with this software ?
hello, why i cant in my davinci put that marker like you on 05:05? ''Option key ''as you say. thx.
What is the maximum frame resolution allowed at 1000fps?
4:41 reminder for me 😗
Could you please share lights links ?
How do you deal with warped looking footage? Is that a post issue or camera? Image stabilization is off. Thanks
What is suggested shutter speed if I would like to acheive this with sony a73 where only 120fps 1080p is an option?
do 1/4000 or higher... this effect requires sharp frames since softwares tries to recreate missing frame. So clearer the frame is better will be results.
I was considering buying the chronos 2.1 or an a7siii, watching this I definitely prefer the a7siii hahah
Yes, I was looking at that one too but it’s hard to use and you don’t film that much slowmo everyday in order to be a good investment
@@AlexDon Yeah it's hard to justify the purchase, not to mention it has worse image quality and a smaller sensor so you get less light
do i understand this right that this should work on any camera and any farmerate?
my bmmcc only shoots 60 fps would i be able to dial that up to 240 fps with this method?
Yes, any camera, but consult your local farmer about his rates!
Yes Jan, you str correct 🤘
What was the lenses that you used for that ?
Can you do this with the canon R5?
Lens?
how can I do this in premiere pro?
Easy. By switching to Davinci Resolve. PP is so shit
Is this possible on the free version of davinci?
This ONLY works in Davinci Resolve and yes you need the paid Studio version as the Speed Warp setting in the free version has a watermark. It works fantastic though!
Does not work anywhere near this good in Premiere Pro or After Effects but magic in Davinci
What focus settings did you have the camera on?
Manual focus 🤘🤘
@@AlexDon Thank you.
Anyone know if you can do this in Final Cut??
As a Canon user id like to ask the community, should I get a Sony for 240fps as canon have only 120fps? Is it worth it? I like canon better but sadly it dosent have 240fps ofcourse I wouldn't use 240fps most of the time only rarely but if I gotta buy a expensive camera it should have all the features I require so should I. Buy Sony for it's 240fps or stick with canon
5-10 minutes? I started the rendering, 13 days and still counting... What shuttle PC is used here?
How to avoid such artifacts and warp look? what kind of movement did not work?
can you do this with 4k 120fps? I would gather you wouldn't be able to hit 1000fps but could you at least hit 120fps. Also wouldn't this process be doable with nearly any camera where you can jack up the shutter speed and shoot 120 to 240fps?
Thanks
Yes you can 🤘
I tried 4k120 and 1080x240 last night after finding this video. It worked just fine, but the 1080x240 looked better I have to assume cause you just have twice the natural frames to work with.
what SS setting?
but if you have 240 fps where you get the rest 760 fps data?
your computer software guesses those missing frames from available frames. That is why you need high shutter speed so that all frames will be perfectly sharper without any motion blur and then computer will be able to regenerate frames in better way. This effect works better or simple objects . Also it works better if background is plain simple and not messy...
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS WORKS IN PREMIERE PRO??? OR AFTER EFFECTS?
I think you can do in "speed duration" option. but you must choose optical flow then rendering that part.
optical flow in premiere and time warp in after effects.
Work with any camera? With gopro video at 240fps?
dont think so.... go pro wont have blur bg so the new frames that are created by software will be more messy.
also there is app called VSCO, it has same feature under smooth motion option.
Hi, are you from Romania?
Sony a7iii 1000fps is possible?
R u using raw file?
Can you do this with premier pro?
right click on the footage > Speed > there is optical flow option
optical flow and now there is an update in premiere which gives us time warp effect in premiere which was only available to after effects until now.
But the best workaround i suggest is to import the clip into after effects, use the plugin called twixter pro for more accurate slow mo than optical flow, then after everything is done. Export the file as prores to be edited in another video editing software ✨️
Twixtor software is good, but it really depends on what kind of footage it is and you have to spend a lot of time playing with settings to avoid the weird warpy look.
@@kaizen5023 only 1 setting : increase the shutter speed
Hi Alexandru, if I give you some 240fps footage from a Sony A7SIII can you edit it to 1,000 for me?
i can
why is it same price like chronos when you cant shoot real 1000 fps? it costs over 4000?
6:52 say thanks later
Hi, you used codec XAVc-S HD exactly ?
Also what kind of card do you used do record the 240 fps ? or what is the minimum to allow this ?
Thanks a lot
Yes yes, that’s exactly right
it is a Studio Feature, not on the free-version
did anybody try that with a6300?
Skip to 2:12. Thank me later
ISO 12.800?
Does that thing even have a sensitivity? Or u can crank it to infinity? 😂😳
The a7siii has 2 base iso, one at 400 and one at 12.800 this is where the camera has the cleanest shadows 💪
this camera worth 4000 us dollars how to save money for this one
