Thus proving that Dio was the earthly embodiment of all things Metal. Even if he wasn't doing background vocals, this is still incredibly metal. Dio didn't die. He just shed his earthly form.
On one hand, this is painful as hell to listen to, but it's HILARIOUS. I'm glad he made this album. Also, this is significantly less ghey (like 27%) than his Crazy Train cover, ergo Dio > Ozzy.
Since his completely white-ified rip-off cover of Little Richard's "Tutti Frutii," Pat Boone has established himself as THE absolute master of making dangerous music safe for suburbanite yuppies.
Hehe actually I came to listen to this song after I learned about it on a site, songfacts[dot]com (sorry, this isn't an ad, I have no connection with it), where it's written "This was covered, ironically, by Gospel singer Pat Boone on his In a Metal Mood album. Acknowledging the subject matter, the song ends with Pat reciting Psalm 23:4. Dio sang backup vocals this - he thought it was hilarious. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)" So yes, Dio was so kindhearted! I love him! A true inspiration!
@OwnageVids10 Because pat's being creative about it, which defines the genious behind a cover. Killswitch engage added, what, 2 notes to the main riff? And a lame harmonic? Then tossed it out to make a fuckload of money off of it. Now, there are little kids thinking that they made that song. Copycats. This, is an entirely different genre. He had to CHANGE it, and WORK with it to make it work. Killswitch looked up Dio tabs on the internet. That's why this version's better.
Yeah, you obviously don't get it. Boone and Alice Cooper got to BSing around about what could Boone do that hadn't really done before. This album was the result. And if you know anything about music and the business of copyright law, you know that all songs, even the most simplistic, have to be scored out by musical transcribers so that there's a "hard copy" to file with A.S.C.A.P. What is brilliant is taking these scores and rearranging them for this Tommy-Dorsey sounding Big Band sound. \m/
I do think thay have knowlege that alot of songs are based on some sort of crazy storybook like the bible yea, and a shitload isnt. But my statment still stands, Its in the eyes of the beholder. If you cant agree with that then this is just stupid. The ones that are a sheep I would say the ones that go with the mass and cant think for them self. If somthing means somthing to you that is real for you and thats good. But it wont be real for me, and thats good to.
that was my point ...ronnie was embarresed because he knew the 'kids" dont want him to come on like a bible basher ....he knew it wasnt commercial - so he wrapped up his belief in cartoon imagery - so it could sell . Listin to ronnies early music with elf -and you will see that even his musical and lyrical taste were very diffrent to rainbow and black sabbath - he knew he had to go "dungeons and dragons ' to cater to mindless teenage boys. Funny thing is -i still like his stuff anyway.
marajuna ,. huh ??? ...finally , yes i can agree with that - why couldnt you just say that in the first place ? Most metal heads have no idea that the genre they love - has many implications about the bible - the devil is just another facet - SO ...if they are so willing to embrace that aspect -they should investigate the rest -to be fully aware of what they are singing -and not just sheep - to stop being ignorant . So yes ...i agree with you - FINALLY.
Well I thought I did but I got a fealing that you dont like people that dont think in your ways or listen to songs like you think thay should. Im not saying that your opinion is wrong but its yours and not mine, this is still a great song one of the best in time for me anyways and it will still be even if I will change my mind about what it means for me. So peace out im off to bed.
Here are some answers I got for the meaning of the song Holy Diver okay so its not me saying this now got it? 1.The song "Holy Diver" is about Satan and his descent into hell. The lyrics deal specifically with Revelations 12:9 where Satan was cast to the earth. 2.I have heard so many differnt meanings to this song most say it's about marajuna. But I think it's really just deal with the music video. Out of space.
Its in the eyes of the beholder, like Dio has said. Cant you read? So what if he made songs about the bible? Holy Diver is still not about jesus. Other songs are about the bible but Im not talking about those songs so stick to point. Can you give a quote of R.J.D saying that he was embarreased of is belief in a god? I cant find any, just that he wanted to believe in a Christ but could not do it. Sorry but now I have to sleep. Please read what I say and not what you think I say.
Your a broken record mate - so its strictly "dungeons and dragons " ? ...or is it because you cant handle the fact that the bible can be a source of inspiration ...and as an atheist , this is meaningless to you , so you knock it and deny its power ? Now to clarify ...dio was embarrased of his belief in god - because he knew all the 'cartoon ' metal heads would not embrace it -so he focused on the dark elements within it -because "its cool '
I looked at it again and I dont get what you mean at all to be honest here. So now Holy Diver is about a fallen angel? I didt get pissy it was you calling me a dickhead when telling you its what you want it to be, if you want it to be about jesus then it its in your world but not mine or others. Dont know what challenge you are talking about here can you give me a hint? So what if he made songs about the bible, holy diver is not about the bible unless you want it to be.
and if you look at my ORIGINAL statement -you will see that i level that accusation at dio -that he is being insincere in his disguise of his story of a fallen angel and his absolute fascination with religion {even in his assumed name for gods sake} On one hand you claim we can all have our own interpretation ...& then when it challenges YOUR assumption {the same thing you accuse me of } you get all pissy. Ronnie references the bible lots of times in his career ..go on , doubt that !
And Dio has been my favorite singer from back in the days of rainbow. I feel sorry for Pat boone HOLY SHIT should be the name of this song not Holy Diver. LOL.
Okay for the last time again. Its in the eyes of the beholder. Do you understand that? Can people get diffrent information from a text? Like can some one listen to this song and say "Hay this is about doing Heroin" or is it just your way or the high way? So yea I stand at its still your personal thing not mine.
ok wise guy ...."we" come along and say its about " x " & you dont even proffer an interpretation - so the burden of proof is on you to supprt your argument . The song is laden with biblical references -just because you take the "it can mean what you want it to mean ' cop out -still wont change that.
Have I said that thay where not important? You think a song is about somthing its not so whos the fool? Like I said before its in the eyes of the beholder. Dio has said its up to the listener to say what it means, so its a personal thing. But maby you know exactly what he was thinking when he wrote that song.
How Christian of you. So this information comes from Dio himself or from some nutcase of the web? I have read many posts that people claim that its about Jesus, The Devil, heroin and many other topics, its all in the eyes of the beholder so to say that its this or that its up to you but It will not be the same for others. If you cant grasp that its your loss.
Songs about myths? He did write songs about DRAGONS so he must believe in dragons then or what? Or do you say that only belivers in jesus can make songs about heaven and hell? Still Holy Diver is not about jesus. Sorry you are wrong but thanks that you suport Dios fight for gay rights with the song Rainbow in the Dark.
This song is not about jesus... You might think it is. If R.J.D was a believer in some sort of god thats was his personal thing so I whould not realy care at all thats not why I listen to his music. If people like to believe in stupid things for no reason its okay with me aslong as thay make great music.
From what I've gathered, Ronnie thought this was hysterically funny. He totally understood what a high compliment this was and how people would probably crap themselves over PAT BOONE doing "devil's music" lol. I remember seeing Pat on tv for this, in that black leather outfit. It helps if you were raised with a warped sense of humor btw. I listened to LOTS of parody music.
@nomadplanet2010 Pat Boone wasnt' mocking Ronnie James Dio. In fact, Ronnie and Pat Boone hung out in the studio while he was recording this tune, and I think Dio even added a few back up vocals for him. Pat Boone caught a lot of flack from those TV christians on TBN over making this album, but he stuck by it anyway.
Dio sings backup vocals on this tune too! Did you know Dio used to play trumpet in high school and sing doo wop? This is far cry from those early days...
This was part of a bet between Pat Boone and Alice Cooper. The other part was to show up to the AMA's that year dressed as each other...Alice Cooper chickened out, but a cool side effect of this was Pat Boone apologized for vilifying metal music, based on the stereotypical view that it was all evil.
It doesnt say that he was embarresed, and I have not found anything that says that he was so if you for one time can give a source for your claim that whould be good. So his lyrics change when the band changed? Well ofc it change, if you dont understand that then wow.
You think that R.J.D {who was born into a time of dylan and paul simon } didnt think lyrics were important ? You think it was just "dungeons and dragons ' -you are exactly the kind of fool kurt cobain spoke of .... "he's the one - who likes all our pretty songs -but he dont know what it means "
I know realy well what Im talking about and still Holy Diver is much about jesus like rainbow in the dark is about gay rights. Alot of R.J.D songs was about mythical stuff so what? Did he believe in dragons and magic then? Cut the crap and get back to reality.
@WeirdAl45231 Most metalheads said WTF!? and the Christian Right burned his records and promised to never listen to him again. As for myself, I appreciate the effort though I don't like this kind of music. It took a lot of courage for Pat Boone to record this record and he deserves creds for it.
Pat Boone METAL GOD!!!!!!! and a fine christian man He paid a great compliment to these artisrs by showing how Dio or Priest for instance would have sounded in the fourties, SAo grow up and appreciate the music for what it is , GREAT MUSIC no matter how it is preformed
wow. i don't know what to say,.. my hidden metal fetish is now done in a muzak style. But i did find it hilarious! Way to go Pat Boone! That was ballsy! LOL I am trying to imagine him pitching it to his band and then they practiced-
Found this one to. "Ronnie James stated in interviews that Holy Diver is about a Christ like figure who saves a world but that world won't let him go." Cant find the sorce tho, So its about a Christ like figure, not jesus. So yea.
Pat smoked this tune Big band in a heavy metal genre I am more than impressed He did a fantastic job , he took metal tunes and made them sound 40s and 50s believable Give him credit , this is what musical genius is all about
At least get the grocery stores (Albertsons, Vons, Ralphs, Stater Bros) to play this freaking version. Incidentally everytime I go in there I just want to scream out loud the realistic version of what phony garbage I hear. It sucks so bad I need ear muffs
Actually Ronnie James collaborated on this CD. He does back up vocals, believe it or not!! LOL! Dweezil Zappa does some guitars and so does Ritchie Blackmore...For a full listing check out wikipedia who is on the album. You'd be surprised!
Its in the Eyes of the beholder ones again. Like you said "i could interpret "rainbow in the dark"" to - be about jesus too if i wanted ." Dont you get that? So ones again its your personal thing not mine.
No Im not missing anything what Dio wants to say in his songs. Like you Im not trying to find stuff thats not there, so no Holy Diver is not about Jesus, Thats like saying that Rainbow in the dark is about gays.
This version is still much better than Killsuck Engorged. Man that band is absolutely terrible! You don't really get more terrible than that, unless you're talking about maybe Britney Spears; but even then it's pretty close.
First of all, love this guy. Real genius back in the 50's until the 90's and later. Want my jazz band to play some of his music. Second, where is this video from? Is it the original video?
These songs have the backing of the original artists because they realize what Boone is doing, he is transforming these into parodies of 40s and 50s big band sounds , And he did a remarkable job of it.
No ...its not . You dont know of what you speak of - plainly wrong - yet ... do you really think Dio is speaking just random images ? Heaven and hell is about what - unicorns ???
I have nothing against pat boone. it just kinda threw me off when he decided to do a tribute album to heavy metal. kinda strange although a unique way to interprut this song.
I know Dio is singing backup and I am sorry for comparing Pat Boone to Justin Bieber( no one is that bad) and I'm not upset that he made this cover, I just think he could have made it better. And I was laughing the whole time( Because like TheDarkLordEthan said) this is fucking hilarious, but I don't think Pat Boone covered this song to make people laugh and most of all I don't like it because I don't think people should laugh at a Dio song( ever if Barney was singing it).
@derrick00000 Your retort was so creative. I've not a trite, euphemistic, derogatory remark left to counter it. As they say here in the interweb, "a winner is you."
It's kind of crazy and scary how much fucked up, creepy shit you can find on UA-cam....I will never be able to un-hear this...that's the worst part!
I love Dio and I love this too! You guys don't understand the Lounge sound? This is big band bop at its best. Thank you Pat!
*BEST VERSION FUCK YEAH*
btw, Dio is himself on the backing vocals! :D You can hear him clearly looool :D
Thus proving that Dio was the earthly embodiment of all things Metal.
Even if he wasn't doing background vocals, this is still incredibly metal.
Dio didn't die. He just shed his earthly form.

Also, this is significantly less ghey (like 27%) than his Crazy Train cover, ergo Dio > Ozzy.
I like it - it's different and crazy it keeps the melody of song with a twist,
I am a long time DIO fan and I am sure DIO is smiling with this
From what I've heard, RJD thought this was great. What a great sense of humor!
Whaaaaaaat?! This is an awesome cover of an awesome song
Since his completely white-ified rip-off cover of Little Richard's "Tutti Frutii," Pat Boone has established himself as THE absolute master of making dangerous music safe for suburbanite yuppies.
Between a rock and a hard place, Pat Boone was condemned by both areas of the genre [Christian and Metal]. This album is comic genius.
Hehe actually I came to listen to this song after I learned about it on a site, songfacts[dot]com (sorry, this isn't an ad, I have no connection with it), where it's written "This was covered, ironically, by Gospel singer Pat Boone on his In a Metal Mood album. OMG, this tided my stomach in knots. It's so wrong, but much like MJ was before tragedy struck, I'm glad it exist, but I won't relisten, gawd.
Lol I was going to but not now
You bumped your head thats not anything close to Dio in the background!
Yeah, you obviously don't get it. Boone and Alice Cooper got to BSing around about what could Boone do that hadn't really done before. This album was the result. Ronnie James Dio in Conan drag, as sung by Pat Boone. Your argument is invalid.
I have nothing against pat boone. it just kinda threw me off when he decided to do a tribute album to heavy metal. kinda strange although a unique way to interprut this song.
The intro and Outro to this song is fucking amazing, too bad this isn't the full version of the song/have the intro/outro
I know Dio is singing backup and I am sorry for comparing Pat Boone to Justin Bieber( no one is that bad) and I'm not upset that he made this cover, I just think he could have made it better. @derrick00000 Your retort was so creative. I've not a trite, euphemistic, derogatory remark left to counter it. As they say here in the interweb, "a winner is you."
Pat Boone is the worst. And Ozzy actually said "This guy f---ing rocks!" once...not so much Ozzy. Oh and he's a Tea Party lunatic, so there's that...
Well it could be about gays according to YOUR logic - that it can mean anything to anyone
...hows that for using your own logic against you ??????
what the hell?! what the fuck was pat boone smoking when he decided to a cover of this song. murder was commited, victim: holy diver prep: pat boone
Funny when they lip sync dios woice with his. God I have no idea but I will probably NEVER watch this shit again.
I actually like this cover.... & for your information so does Dio. He has nothing but good things to say about it... hell he even performed on it
I loled when I heard "holi diveer" ....
Oh god, the poor metal :( he tried to release swing and jazz onto it.
This man is a monster...
BLASTING THIS FULL BLAST IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD WITH FISTS IN THE AIR !!!!!!!!!! Nosy neighbor goes inside house > problem solved yeah!
I never noticed that before but you are right. If you are at all familiar with Dio you can really hear him on certain parts.
An evening of this ... with some good friends... on a shroom trip. ...
Yeah.. that's a ride
then your missing half the power of music if you dont really care about what dio is saying - AND ...it IS about jesus
To the people who hate this. Well, so much for trying to get you into Richard Cheese! This is funny as hell!
I think this is my favorite off of this album. I honestly haven't been able to finish most of the others.
@OwnageVids10 because pat boone is more metal than killswitch engage
killswitch are a bunch of posers
Except that it's not; but keep thinking that if it makes you feel better. I won't hold it against you
omigawd this is too fucking funny man..it's like slayer doing lounge music...hahahahaha...fuk mn...
omigawdthsis ois ttooo FUNNY lmfao...this is like perry como does slayer orsomething!!!!omigawd!!!!
Would have to say that Killswitch Engage do a better cover. Mainly because of the pinch harmonics.
I'm glad you wrote 'cover ' in the title of this video. I thought Pat Boone wrote this one!
Well you are not using it against my logic sorry. Thats what I have bean saying all along.
I wonder what metalheads and their anti-metal parents thought baout this when it premeired...
@GuiltlessGear Definitely not, this guy should've stayed within the 50's Soft Rock genre.
I gotta say, this is a cool project and it is clear Pat Boone loves and respects metal.
(Dio sang backing vocals on this, so he not even listened, but he was part of it)
RIP Dio, I hope he's up there laughing along. This is a great jazz cover, clearly.
@derrick00000 Well I have to agree with you on one thing; they did kill this song.
What has once been heard... Can not be unheard...
The terror...
The terror...
hey, it still kickass! It wasn't totally wussified like the Enter Sandman cover!
I knew I was gonna dig this version after the first 5 seconds. Long live Dio.
Dio looks kinda tall here. 5" platforms and good camera angles work miracles.
I never thought a day would come when I would hear a Dio song on an elevator.
@LoveMetalForever100 Ronnie did the backing vocals on this very track... :-\
