Awesome demo. I discovered this years ago accidentally and have used it many times when I wanted to use a low shutter speed but avoid motion blur / camera shake artifacts. I never took the time to do this simple demo for myself, you nailed it. This gets me thinking about a whole bunch of situations to apply this... certainly could reduce some tripod use

I’ve been looking everywhere for this video! I was using flash inside dark ballrooms and iso 4000. Photos were coming out so so dull that it made my $5000 dollar camera look like a Nokia taking pictures. I always thought my shutter had to be twice my focal length. Now I know with flash, I don’t have to use a fast shutter anymore! Thank you so much!!!!

Just happened to discover this technique by accident. As I’m using f2.8 Lens on an APS-C body at an Evening party in a bar! So I have no choices but to lower my S.S. without bumping my ISO so high. Lol I was amazed how I can freeze movements and get sharp photos with 1/15-1/30 Shutter!

Got my alarm set for the FREE Live Stream. I'm excited about this. We'll have to discuss the circle of confusion and how it is used to determine the depth of field. Just kidding. Looking forward to it.
This is another reason why flash and continuous lights are so much different. Flash will stop motion - continuous lights won't. They do both have their advantages, though.

Thanks for this lesson, your channel has helped me out a lot and I love your teaching style. I have a question about this - when it comes to freezing motion, is there a relationship between the distance of subject and flash (off camera), I'm not talking about like at a football game where they are very far, just within a few meters or so. I have found that sometimes there is motion blur when using this technique with off camera flash.

I once tried to get a good clear pic of a child when he ran past me, using flash. Wasn't using a DSLR but a pocket camera but it should still work. I got a ghost like image .. semi transparent. I then realized this needs a much more powerful flash than the little pop up flash on my camera.

First of all, thank you so much for your videos and this tutorial. I’ve definitely learned a lot through your tutorials and am very grateful :).
I did an experiment and noticed that there was some motion blur being captured. Flash (Godox TT685) was at lowest output 1/128th (for a faster flash duration), Camera at F/2.8, Shutter Speed 1/15, ISO 500 (to capture ambient light). I noticed that flash does indeed freeze motion, but there is also motion blur captured in the exposure due to the ambient light and slower shutter speed. With there being ambient light, it makes sense that there’s a bit of motion blur captured in the exposure.
From my experience, yes you can use a slower shutter speed with flash and still freeze motion to an extent, but not entirely if there is a continuous light source which would record motion blur (unless the subject is static).
Just thought I’d share my findings, would love to hear your thoughts :)

Whoa whoa, NO. You seem to have the right idea, but the way you're explaining it creates all sorts of problems. NO.....flash is not better at stopping motion than shutterspeed, although SOMETIMES it CAN be. And no, you're not shooting in "natural light." What you're doing, is using a very specific scenario where your premise is true, but then mistakenly applying your results to the universe. What you SHOULD be saying is "in lower light situations your flash can stop motion BETTER if you lower your shutter speed....because very high shutter speeds force your flash to work at higher power which LENGTHENS your duration" THAT would be true. The idea that flash, flat out, is better than shutter speed at stopping motion is nonsense. In the real world, when we have higher AMBIENT light, and our flash has to compete with that light, the higher power forces a shorter duration which can utterly FAIL to stop motion. If you know that that's true, it can save you from trying to accomplish something that really requires some sort of a SHUTTER SPEED solution.
