@@RenaissancePeriodization If Ronnie Coleman was 215 lbs on stage how much does that translate to in everyday life? So same muscle mass but with 12% body fat and no dehydration. Around 230 lbs? I don't know how water weight bodybuilders lose.

The only thing i disagree with is the oral-only cycles and that Mike states it doesnt shut people down, which it absolutely suppresses and shutdowns most guys frmo what ive heard and seen.
Well if you wanna be an open pro bodybuilder minimum your looking at with the best genetics is 2 grams a week. Minimum. Many of the guys dying very early outside of the ones who die bc of diuretics and acute life stress than seemed other wise healthy based on blood work, are guys who are on 5 grams of test alone. The important part is monitering blood work and organ imaging, having an overall healthy diet, recovery, supplementation and medication routine. The biggest study ever on test dosages showed young healthy males taking 600mg per week had no increased adverse effects on health markers. Ppl underestimate what high doses are that are rlly dangerous bc theres largely never been enough studies and insight on the matter of androgens. Now that advanced blood panel readings, organ imaging and knowledge on supps/nutrition and preventative medications are a thing, ppl will be able to do it much safer.
I thought it was less to do with atrophy of the testicles and more because if you pick a DHT oral then there is no aromatisation into estrogen and therefore your body cannot immediately detect increased testosterone levels so you get no immediate suppression and instead it takes longer for the body to recognise increased amounts of androgens which typically takes 4 - 6 weeks for that to happen?
@Chris my understanding of the dose being a factor was mostly just because a large dose using a given ester will result in a much longer time for the drug to clear your system completely than a smaller dose with the same ester, and therefore your cycle with the larger dose is longer than with the smaller dose so it again comes back to duration (of drug in your system) that is the only factor?
@@thewrenchjockey7146 You will definitely get shut down quickly with DHT only steroids and same with SARMs. You might not be all the way shut down and just suppressed but you should still do a PCT after to bring your levels back up to normal. It might actually take longer to shut down if you are taking testosterone if it has a long ester. Enanthate or Cypionate take nearly 3 weeks to clear from your system and inversely take about the same amount of time to build up enough in your system to shut down your HPTA. Most SARMs and oral steroids have a short half life and start working in your system and suppressing you from day one.
This video actually made me realize i have somewhat better genetics. Started at 135 and now 200 natty. Now i can feel great about my only personality trait, thanks Dr. Mike!
That is so true; I start training at bodyweight 138 pounds and after around 2 years is 182 pounds with the same body fat. Focus and discipline are way crucial than "enhancement substances".
And then you have people asking if you're juicing cuz you made gains naturally 😅😂 I'm female and get asked this (which I find funny cuz although I have clearly gained mass I still feel small&use to be overall bigger/heavier before covid) like no bro, track your macros properly, eat whole foods, enough protein, train/rest properly applying progressive overload, be consistent and you will grow (unless they have terrible genetics ofcourse😅). My brother also gets asked ALOT and accused so clearly we have decent genetics (Thank God!). Usually comes from men who were natty on and off for 1-2years and went on PEDs so they don't really know their natural potential even and they've never tried. You look at their form on exercises that use free weights and it's terrible 😅 like jheeeeze what are you doing?? No wonder you gave up being natty and think everyone with mass and definition are juicing 😅😅🙏🏻
I was a soccer player all my life and didnt even want to get very big...my first 2 years of lifting 17-19 i went from 155lbs to 195lbs. And of course stayed lean due to all the running required for soccer. Im 36 years old now with a few long term lifting breaks over the years but it seems my limit is about a lean 205. Although my strength has been increasing..so who knows! Just keep grinding ladies and gents.
This is the best video of the last 1,000 videos I saw on UA-cam! It's extremely hard to find someone who knows that much on the subject and supports his perspective with this amount of numbers! If only this video was released 5 years early when I was researching/writing my masters dissertation about PEDs! I feel as though more people are openly discussing it today compared to back then- it was hard to get men to openly discuss their use (I was focused on males in the sector - I'm female). Many still aren't open but still a higher % that are open now from what I'm seeing VS back then. Thank you for going into this Dr.Mike. RP content never fails to educate & entertain simultaneously 👌🏼

Thank you for doing this dr. Mike!! I'm 8 years in to my journey and at this point very satisfied with my results. I will likely never do drugs for anything other than longevity when I'm getting old. @@RenaissancePeriodization I'd like to see a video that goes into more depth on some of the common (and perhaps slightly less common) injuries and how to mitigate them or train around them. Stuff like patellar tendonitis, lateral and medial epicondylitis, coming back from rotator cuff injuries (that whole half of the upper body is just not the same), and various types of vertebral fractures (compression and endplate). The instinct always seems to be to push through it or to completely shut down training that area, but when there are a lot of them together, it gets to be a hinderance. Thank you for the content, and listening to us viewers!
@@mattulbing Dude, I have a SLAP tear on my shoulder as well, upper body strength has never been the same. The doctor has asked me to go for surgery since I haven't been doing that well even after multiple physio sessions and rest. So that would be a great topic to touch on for RP.

This is really cool! I’d still love to see what 5, 10, 15, 20lbs of muscle on a frame looks like for context, not sure if you have any suggested resources for that or if you might make a video on it!
I don’t think it would be helpful. Everyone carries it different And risking your balls health to get 10 pounds in the mirror, and if it ends up in your posterior chain you will be disappointed 😢
Depends on the person. If i take myself as an example. Started march 2020 with sarms. I'm now on my 4th cycle and if i look at progress pics you can deff see the difference. Trained almost 10 years natty before starting with sarms. Below my progress 01 march 2020 82.6kg 13-14% BF 01 dec 2020 84.8 kg 12-13% BF 01 dec 2021 89.2kg 13-14% BF As you can see i gained about 6.5kg (about 15lbs) and you can deff see it on my frame, especially my chest, shoulders and traps.
Competed at my first show it was untested and I am natty, placed 2nd. I'm 21 and I'm bigger and leaner than a lot of people who use boatloads of gear, just because I watch RP. Gonna turn pro natty next year, might go to the Olympia too. Planning to bulk to 400kg and cut to 399kg at 0.33% bodyfat.
Eye opening.... I'm 5"5" & 170lbs roughly 14% body fat and been lifting since age 13. I consider myself pretty ripped, pushing 50 years old. Always thought that I could morph into a beast with a little help. Never thought the risks outweighed the benefits though. Too many ppl compare themselves against social media influencers.
@@bobboberson6664 150mg is basically a light cruise, anything over about 75mg of test cyp is. That's fine of course as it doesn't hurt anybody else but you're definitely beyond any natural at that point
This should be compulsory watching for everyone who is starting off at the gym, especially the last couple of slides. How this is not the most watched video in the fitness community, I don't know!
I'm glad you mentioned all the detrimental effects these compounds can have on mental/emotional wellbeing. It's not something that is discussed enough, but when you look at the bodybuilding community you can see the emotional instability, the mood swings, etc. So much of the drama is at least partially drug-fueled behavioral changes (which does not excuse it). People predisposed to mental illness are a seriously vulnerable group that have yet to be examined sufficiently in the context of PEDs.
it would be interesting to see how much is directly attributed to the compounds, and not to the many other aspects of bodybuilding that have significant mental and psychological affects. Severe dieting can cause mood swings, sleep disruptions (which amplify the issues more), dehydration/water cutting has mental and emotional effects, not getting dopamine releases from food and instead eating only for effect, etc. there are so many different aspects of bodybuilding that can cause mood swings and drama in any person, I'm sure the drugs don't help but I'd. be curious to know how much is directly attributed, and not concurrent effects of bodybuilding on the general overall feeling of wellness. If a sport can cause a woman to stop menstruating from forcing her bf% so low, and she's a natty? That's a very powerful effect, and just by forcing the body to do what we want and ignoring what we feel. there are more forces in play here on the mind and emotional state than people realize. And these are all risks that each person has to weigh for themselves, no pun intended.
it's also really difficult I would imagine to properly run a study... there are so many variables, and mood can be affected by so many different things, it would be difficult to measure which of the many aspects of bodybuilding are having negative impacts on mental health. For example - dehydration might just make you feel a bit run down, but add carb depleted to it and it increases. throw one night of insomnia with only a couple hours sleep, now it's compounded significantly, much further than one may expect. Now add hormones into the mix. All of these things work in concert, I just wish there was a way we could study, isolate and measure each variable and their possible cumulative effect.there are so many more studies that need to be done not just in bodybuilders, but powerlifters, strongmen, and combat sports. shit man, I'm getting a little depressed looking at all of these negative mental impacts of the sport I have passion for😂 but, for me, there is no therapy quite like a 100% workout. We are trying to find balance in a sport of extremes.

I only recently discovered Dr. Mike several weeks ago and his channel is pure genius. My wife and I were just watching a few of his Hollywood workout critiques and we were laughing our asses off! This guy is entertaining and brilliant. The industry needs more experts like him to tell it like it is. I've trained naturally from day one for over 30 years and it's the best decision I've ever made. At 44 I'm in excellent health and almost as strong as I was at 35. The 'dark side' was never an option for me. Keep up the great work Dr. Mike and thanks for the laughs.
Even as a person who has decided to stay natty all his life, this stuff is really interesting, because there aren't many places with credible, no bullshit information on this stuff. And I have no interest in trawling through weird bodybuilding forums to find out about all this. So as always, amazing content! Dr. Mike out here schooling people left and right.
Great video. To be honest, I hate this entire video because it killed my "dream body" goals.... but I am grateful for you telling me what I had to hear instead of telling me what I wanted to hear....
Really happy to see that people like Dr Mike are willing to spend time for proper academic explication of how things actually work… This content is almost unbelievable when you see all the other crap on UA-cam and the Internet in general.

Finally a one-stop-shop to text a link of to somebody who’s in year one asking me about what they should be getting on, right after asking me how many sit-ups I do.

Thank you for talking about natty vs drugs without doing the bullsh1t natty or nut videos to make money and waste people's time as well as they promote drama, talking behind someone's back and shows a lack of balls to do personal interviews with the people they are accusing. Excellent content 👍
Hey man, just wanted to say I can completely attest to your point about getting bigger/stronger so quickly that you can cause injuries and I appreciate you including it. Added 100 lbs to my bench on a cycle of Test in college before I tore a labrum in my shoulder and it has never felt fully healthy since. Not gonna say that overtraining the movement or suboptimal form couldn't have played a role but the heavier loads (with connective tissue that hasn't caught up to the added muscularity) just compounds the issue.
Thanks Dr.Mike, amazing as per usual. I first started training Nov 2017, already lean at 150 pounds, strict dieting and consistent training I now weigh about 180, still pretty dam lean, to be honest I always thought my genetics weren't great! But I guess I havent been doing too badly according to your video 👌
This was interesting. The gain potential is there even post 45 . In my case I trained most of my adult life, I'm 52 now. Just plugging away at it week after week. Pretty much holding static for the last 10 years. Then one day I got a blood work makeup done. 200ng/dl total T. So do you know what happens if you've been training a long time in a testosterone depleted state and suddenly your free test jumps five fold 24/7? You gain a lot of size and strength..even in your late 40's.
Trt from a Dr? Or find a guy, and juiced yourself? I'm on trt my test was lower than yours, and I'm on 75 MG for now. It's taken months to get to 75, my dr says he always doses slow up to 6-8 hundred test.

Thank you. Very informative. Life time natty slowly considering more and more to start using. 5 ft 5 was 100 pounds. Now 170-175 at 15 or so percent bodyfat. Luckily i had the genes for it so never actually needed it. Also started when i was like 15. Still gaining 15 years later.
This actually really helped straighten out a lot of ‘issues’ and questions I’ve had. I’ve been training for about 18 months and I’m gaining plenty of muscle (I’m 6’2” and I’m about 245lbs but I’m at like 21%bf) but i look like shit and i know it’s diet but every time i go into deficit i get horrible mood swings and I’ve been debating starting to use gear, i think I’ll hold off for the foreseeable future. Thanks man!
I was in that boat, 6.2 230lbs, dieted wrong to 195lbs, lost a lot more muscle and went oo fast. I realised at that point I want more mass so have been slowly gaining since January to currently 210lbs. 15% bodyfat, want to get to around 220-230, whatever feels good. Greg really cracked the code with eating with me, eat less move more. Weigh every day and depending on direction trend, eat a little less or move a little more. Currently eating 4k calories and never hungry.
Not optimal. You already missed your prime growing years where ur organ and bodily systems in general could best handle drugs. Worst advice is to wait until your 30 or later ideally you wanna be done by your mid to late 30s at most. Starting late gives u a greater chance of issues, doesn't help out anything.
@@nickcollins9170 Totally agreed, either start now or dont bother at all, your body can handle the drugs and extra food much better when you're younger.

Do you know or have any experience coaching females with PCOS? We have high male hormones and low female hormones. I don't have any of the typical PCOS symptoms besides amenorrhea. I seem to get muscle gains more consistent with male gains! Whoop, lucky me. 🤣 but, I can't find any studies involving female bodybuilders with PCOS. Would you please do a video?
I was maybe 140-150 when I started lifting at around 15-16. Like many people, I went through multiple phases where I did a few months straight of lifting, and then a few months of not lifting at all/as much, as well as focusing more on sports specific training(muay Thai and baseball). I’d say since about 18 I’ve been lifting pretty consistently (at-least 4 times a week). I’m 27 now and am weighing in at 205-208 at 5’9(my heaviest ever being 220). The natural journey is something I’m extremely proud of and I’d encourage any young(er) people out there to stick with it.
I was told, and still believe it, that orals do more damage than injections, because of the liver and kidney. What about starting out with a small dose of injections in stead of orals?
Unless you’re trying to compete or make money from it somehow, not sure why you’d go enhanced. Even 3-4 years of serious natural training would put most men in the 99.9th to percentile of muscle mass. Being the most jacked out of a random sample of 1000 guys gives you all the benefits of an impressive/imposing look and all the health that comes with it, with none of the risks of the drugs. Plus you’ll actually be healthy at aged 60ish… a natty is probably going to have way better body composition and cardiovascular health than someone in their 40s who’s done 5-10 years of moderate/aggressive anabolic dosing
Totally agree. At 46yo, totally drug free, I'm starting to appreciate the benefits of natty training my whole life. Still making small gains, looking way more fit than my 22 yo daughter's boyfriend. Among my friends(around my age) I feel like a supermodel. Everyone complimenting me on my looks, women take me for 30yo, I'm ACTUALLY physically fit - running, cycling, kayaking or just doing random feats like climbing /jumping over a tall parking fence to the amazement of my peers. I am pretty sure I never achieved the size or proportions I dreamed of, when I was 20, but it is now, after so many years that I realize I've gained much more than that - a physique both healthy and attractive. Cheers!
@@QazJer honestly fully respect that. My general political belief is that all drugs should be decriminalized and people should be free to damage themselves as long as they don’t harm others 🤷🏻… but I genuinely don’t understand the mentality of someone who would want to do it.
No, not necessarily, today its possible to use gear relatively safely with the access to blood work, organ imaging, preventative supplementation and medication. Plenty of pros even who used lots of shit who are still alive in their 70s and thats with doing things wrong and not checking your vital markers or using meds.
I used steroids (test and occasional dbol) for almost 2 years in my late 20s. Very bad genetics (Indian). Based on dexa scans and removing an estimated water/bloat component I would estimate I added 12-15 lbs of dry tissue while I was on higher doses (500 to 750 mg). I still remained smaller and weaker than a genetically well off natural would be, but it was an improvement relative to my baseline. It is what it is. Now that I'm off most of it is gone. It was an interesting phase of my life.
@Baki I took clomid and nolva for a month or so after. No hcg. I haven't checked my test levels. I felt like shit for the first 2 months after and then at month 3 I felt fine.
Dr. Mike, I've watched your videos for a good while and I have to say one thing, which someone has probably pointed out before. I think you would have made a tremendous actor, standup comedian, radio host etc. It's incredibly rare to encounter someone with such a fucking incredible charisma.
Dr.Mike, what is your opinion on TRT, staying at natual levels, just as a medical procedure as one ages. Will it bring muscle growth? or since your still in the 'natural' ranges will it not make a big differance? I am wondering if getting TRT after 40 is worth the money
@@AnthonyVenmans I live in a country with strict regulations on TRT so.... probably not the case for what I know. I no in the states they can presribe insane TRT doses, but not here. At least to my knowledge
I'm not sure how many people even noticed but I just wanted to applaud you Mike, that impersonation of palpatine was excellent even if it was just saying dark side. Haha
Although I never plan on going to the dark side, this was a very awesome lecture. Luckily at my age, I'm not even tempted anymore. When you're almost 40, married and have children it kind of kills your aspirations of... Well anyting
Stupid question - Can you hop on gear to reach your "genetic potential" for muscle gain and then post cycle therapy back to natural and retain the gained mass? Or will most of it go away when you come off the juice? Assuming you follow a standard PPL routine 5 days a week and eat for macros. Edit: Finished the video... forget I asked.
@@GokuPlaysUK I think you keep some gains if a proper pct is done and the gains are under your genetic limit. That also changes in regards your response to the pct, some people will need TRT very easily while others won’t
I'd like to see those "half-life" curves. If someone of X composition achieves Y form, how many Z drugs to maintain N %? Fun thought experiment. If someone blasts once in the year how much more can they maintain across time? Etc.
@PogChamp You will never feel as good or be exactly as big as you were during a cycle. Even if you can maintain a lot you'll always lose something after quitting and that is exactly why people don't stop. Losing something you once had is much more difficult to accept.
Damn, apparently I had better genetics than I thought. My top was around 2008: I weighed around 195-200 lbs at around 9-10% BF at 5'9 (had been lifting for about 5-6 years). I remember thinking I was bigger than a lot of people, but there were plenty of "naturals" that were much bigger than me. My lifts weren't that great though: 200kg max squat, 230kg max deadlift (ridiculously short arms), 150kg benchpress. I trained non-stop in several sports though, and I've got the joints and ligaments of a 70 year old. And once I hit that weight, literally only eating less for a few days or going out drinking for a few weekends was enough for me to just gain fat and decline. Wonder if I'd be less prone to injury on gear. Too late now anyways, I'm 200lbs with probably 20% BF and much lower numbers :P
This is honestly the most thorough yet still concise video I've ever seen on this topic. Thank you Dr. Mike

@Jo Jo that's exactly correct. - Dr. Mike

What sorts of related topics did you want us to cover? - Dr. Mike

Diet and training interact
Training and recovery interact
Recovery and diet interact.
Drugs interact with all 3. Going from natty to the dark side makes things twice as complicated (3 interactions to 6).
Have all your ducks in a row if you want to have a chance at making the most of your limited number of cycles.
This is really cool! I’d still love to see what 5, 10, 15, 20lbs of muscle on a frame looks like for context, not sure if you have any suggested resources for that or if you might make a video on it!

Try looking at Nick Walker's progress.
Below my progress
01 march 2020 82.6kg 13-14% BF
01 dec 2020 84.8 kg 12-13% BF
01 dec 2021 89.2kg 13-14% BF
As you can see i gained about 6.5kg (about 15lbs) and you can deff see it on my frame, especially my chest, shoulders and traps.

Great video, the most concise information out there on this topic
Hey man, just wanted to say I can completely attest to your point about getting bigger/stronger so quickly that you can cause injuries and I appreciate you including it. Added 100 lbs to my bench on a cycle of Test in college before I tore a labrum in my shoulder and it has never felt fully healthy since. Not gonna say that overtraining the movement or suboptimal form couldn't have played a role but the heavier loads (with connective tissue that hasn't caught up to the added muscularity) just compounds the issue.
The BEST video on expectations. Thank you a lot for this.

Dr. Mike, love your video content. Glad I’ve found your channel.
Cheers!

No, not necessarily, today its possible to use gear relatively safely with the access to blood work, organ imaging, preventative supplementation and medication. Plenty of pros even who used lots of shit who are still alive in their 70s and thats with doing things wrong and not checking your vital markers or using meds.
Great to have this content. It shows what really is possible - but also that for the most gym goers its just not worth the risk.
What was your weight/height and max lifts in the squat/bench/dead at the time if you remember?
@Baki I took clomid and nolva for a month or so after. No hcg. I haven't checked my test levels. I felt like shit for the first 2 months after and then at month 3 I felt fine.

Great vid and I really appreciate the comment about not cheating.
Stupid question - Can you hop on gear to reach your "genetic potential" for muscle gain and then post cycle therapy back to natural and retain the gained mass? Or will most of it go away when you come off the juice? Assuming you follow a standard PPL routine 5 days a week and eat for macros. Edit: Finished the video... forget I asked.
any gains you made on cycle will be lost unless on trt even then you'll still loose a few lbs of muscle
@@GokuPlaysUK I think you keep some gains if a proper pct is done and the gains are under your genetic limit. That also changes in regards your response to the pct, some people will need TRT very easily while others won’t
@@GokuPlaysUK what are you talking about? you’ll retain your gains after cycle. not all of them but a decent amount.
Incredible video. Biggest regret in my journey is hoping into things before that 10 year mark
Oh yes the rice, chicken and broccoli diet
Great video! Dr. Mike I think it would be really awesome to have some more info concerning this topic and women in bodybuilding!!
Would have been more injury prone. Joints wouldnt be any better but likely you would load them a lot more
Low dose gh would have fixed your joints. Deca would have made them feel great while you were on.
Thomas sowell? A man of class I see. Only channel I will use for bodybuilding from here on out.
Jez that was a lot!
