Here's a very sad story: the children in an English family became sickly, with odd stomachaches that got better but then recurred over & over. Servants also became sick & too exhausted to work, so mom had the sick children moved from upstairs to the sitting room so she could more easily look after them. Then the pattern changed; they never got better, just weaker & weaker. Doctors were stymied as the children died one by one. Finally, a specialist asked for a complete history of the mystery illness & realized it started when mom redecorated the downstairs rooms. With ultra chic green wallpaper, just like Queen Victoria had! Which was so avant garde with a newly invented vibrant green dye. "Arsenic green."😨

Ken Follett does historical fiction. I think his best work is Pillars of the Earth. It’s the only book I ever put it down for a week because a character died.
Oh! That's nothing like what I had imagined a Tea Gown looked like! I read a lot of historical romance, so it's really fun to see videos like this, gives me a better mental image when I'm reading!😊❤
I just love these little glimpses into the past! I used to do dollhouse miniatures and focused primarily on the Victorian era, but loved researching many different eras through catalogs, cookbooks, etc. This is a much more pleasant diversion into those eras. Thank you!
How do you have a ‘fave year that is 1878’? That’s quite specific, also the really good years in the 1800s were the 1880s. It was a decade of boom time architecture, wealth creation, opulence, before the crash of 1889 (as far as I get it, I mean)
@@ValeriePallaoro my favourite book as a child was set in that year so it’s really nostalgic for me, but i do also overall find 1878 to be a really interesting year historically as a lot of stuff happened that kind of set the foundation for things that had a huge impact later
@@tickley42 Well, it would be the same gown, just serving a different purpose. People choose to wear all manner of things in life, and for their last wardrobe choice. I just cannot imagine why my mind went there! 🤦♂🤣
The wall paper on the walls of Victorian houses was the most common way to get poisoned because it had a lot of arsenic in it. The particles coming off the velvet type would break off and then be breathed into your lungs it would also be absorbed through your skin this problem became so great that the wallpaper manufacturers who are putting the arsenic in their product, were forced to take it out and even advertise that it had no arsenic in it
I remember an old Victorian house we lived in (rental) when I was a child and the living room had that wallpaper - burgundy with black velvet scroll. It may have been original to the home for all I know.
Well, if you wake up in your pajamas, throw on a bathrobe to eat breakfast, change into something appropriate for work, hit the gym after work in your athletic wear, and finally change into sweatpants while you relax then you’ve changed outfits more times than this. The Victorian outfits have a lot more layers and more fabric in each layer then ours would but the difference is that we’re expected to wear completely different outfits every day. Even a capsule wardrobe is going to have a lot more pieces than your average Victorian could afford. It’s also way harder to make anything new out of modern clothing when styles change so more stuff gets thrown out before the fabric is worn to shreds even if you don’t count fast fashion stuff that falls apart after two washes. It’s so interesting how this seems so fancy to us even though this woman would probably think we’re royalty if she saw the size of your average modern person’s closet. We have a totally different view on clothing than they did.
OH MY GOODNESS . You just clarified so much of the book I just finished 😂 I couldn’t figure out what a wrapper was, I assumed it was robe, but apparently google wanted to be tricky with me that day. Thank you!
Google started out as a really good search engine many moons ago. You could easily get reliable, relevant information for your searches. But since then has just turned into a giant purchase machine and only shows things to buy for the most part.
I wouldn’t normally subscribe to a channel that is such as the likes of women women’s fashion as a man but I absolutely love the American heritage that you in your passions, profoundly display, and inspires my artistic flare to do something similar in nature, as I have been thinking about for at least a decade.
These are super pretty and I think the rapper looks nice with the apron on top even if it's just to be worn around the house❤ Also I'm a speech therapist and you do something interesting with your voice. At the end of each sentence you do something called glottal fry. The last one or two words of the sentence sounds much lower in pitch than the rest and rough. It's an interesting phenomenon that also happens in large groups of people where sometimes even if people didn't start talking like that they all start to talk like that after talking with each other for a little bit!!!
What happened if you stepped out in the wrong outfit? What if you went shopping in your tea gown, cleaned in your night gown, and chilled in your wrapper in the afternoon(?)?
I love these videos. Could you do one for a lady of high society as well, maybe an idea of what their entire wardrobe may consist of? Also, I know you don't do children's clothing, but do you think that you'd consider making a video or two showing what children would have in their wardrobe according to their age, maybe a small girl, and a teen girl? I'd love to see more historical fashion and I don't know of anyone else who covers the children's clothing either. I don't know why exactly because I don't think they were bare bottom all the time😂. Just consider the idea. How cool would it be to make some examples and borrow some kiddos from friends and family to model for you❤❤❤.
Also, there are methods of lacing up corsets that allow them to be put on alone, so if a woman needed a working corset for support, she might have put it on immediately. Corsets were often significantly more comfortable than we give them credit for. It was really only when you got into the upper echelons of high society that they were used as aggressive waist trimming fashion statements. For most people, they were just ye olde supportive underwear, and every woman wore them, including ones without a servant to help put them on, so independent lacing methods were common to see.
This is a question about ranchers/farmers in the Montana/Idaho area. What would they typically wear? I know from my great aunts they had to wear long underwear and socks that they would roll up/down on their way to school, but little else.
I would like to be part of the movement that brings back tea gowns
Really a lovely piece of day wear! Bring back elegance!
Couldn't agree more.
I don't want to wait. I'm going to make one or have one made. I deserve a Tea Gown 😍
As a man, I'm all for it! Even as simple casual wear, it is, by far, more glorious than the majority of the ugly things worn out in public, today!
SAAAMMMEEE!!! I need to find a plus-size pattern 😩
I imagine many women might have changed back into the wrapper unless they were in a "No bra, just sweatpants" kind of mood. 😂
Really? The tea gown is so much prettier than the wrapper? If it’s just as socially acceptable and comfortable, why wouldn’t you choose to be pretty?
