@@jonathanmulondo9206 I agree 100%, I’ve rewatched Prince of Darkness twice in the past year, and it really grew on me a lot since I originally saw it 20 or so years ago. I don’t think it’ll ever have the “rediscovery” appeal of The Thing, but give it a few years and I bet more people will come around to it. That movie is great.
I think he had a few projects that would’ve been excellent, but ultimately he didn’t like working with bigger budgets, in which a studio has more oversight, so it’s likely he’d have been miserable. He is a really great example of necessity being the mother of invention, with how he plans things out for the lower budgets he’s had, and makes it work for him. In the Mouth of Madness is one of my favorite movies of all time. I read a lot of Lovecraft, from middle school through high school, and I’d also read many Stephen King, and a few Dean Koontz books/short stories, so it was a perfect movie for me at 18 years old. Speaking of Koontz, if you’ve ever seen the movie High Tension; there’s a made for tv, two part miniseries, based on the book Intensity, which was made several years prior. High Tension steals multiple scenes straight from the book, and/or the miniseries, to the point it made the movie unwatchable for me.
John Carpenter, George Romero, Wes Craven, Sean Cunningham, John Landis, Tobey Hooper, Dario Argento, Guillermo del Toro, there are so many horror film masters whose stories are waiting to be told that they all deserve a feature. I know the golden age of classic horror may never return, but hopefully at least the next generation of young people will still be able to explore the treasures of the past.
John Carpenter is a director who, while not always great, always makes films that are interesting and fun. Edit: I wish we saw his Creature from the Black Lagoon movie. It would have been awesome.
Creature for the black lagoon directed John Carpenter. That movie would have been amazing. Hoping he can make another film if he wants to! And would love to hear you make a video on Guillermo Del Toro's cancelled At The Mountains of Madness
You should talk about Carpenter’s two episodes of the anthology series MASTERS OF HORROR from around 2006. His episode “Cigarette Burns” is one of the most uncomfortably disturbing things he’s ever made and his other episode “Pro-Life” is pretty good too. It’s a great, little remembered hard R horror series overall.

Another interesting fact about Firestarter and Christine: George A. Romero was originally set to direct the film adaptation of Christine (as he and King were friends and had worked on Creepshow together). Romero was released from the project and Carpenter had taken over.
John Carpenter has also been attached to two separate Dracula adaptations. One was around the time of Memoirs, and the other in the late 2000s/early 2010s where he was slated to direct Fangland, an adaptation of John Marks' novel which is a reinvisionist take on Dracula set in a post 9/11 New York in a 60 Minutes style news organization, with Hilary Swank set to produce and Star. After Carpenter left, Wes Craven was hired to direct before he died a few years later.

Considering his love for Howard Hawks, I’m sad he never got a chance to direct a western. Though, it’s understandable why, westerns were dying out when he came on the scene.
Even if he didn't make an explicit western so many of his movies have very clear western influences that he may just have decided not to. Assauly on precinct 13 is probably the clearest example of "in all but setting this is a western" but the protagonist of They Live is literally a man with no name lol
Successess & setbacks... perfect choice of words. One of his biggest setbacks, became one of the greatest Horror/Sci-Fi movies of all time. His setbacks, should never be considered as absolute failures. Big Trouble in Little China is beloved now, and some people that discovered it later, discovered that much of Mortal Kombat came from that movie. No need to discuss what They Live has contributed, all with the great Rowdy Roddy Piper, who did a pretty poor acting job, but somehow came out as iconic anyway. His Successes and failures were always very unique, and if they didn't succeed themselves, they made a huge impact on other creators' visions. Most of them. Don't @me for Ghosts of Mars.. the guy is pure genius and talent. Have you seen the video where he plays the Halloween theme on the Nintendo Labo? It's awesome, he's great.
The creature from the black lagoon could have been great. The video game angle is interesting too I would love it if he could go out on a high note in life for such a legend!

You've given them to far less, and without THIS man, the cash you've made with slasher genre started by him and Bob Clark (Black Christmas 1974), you wouldn't have the multimillion horror franchises you have today....... SHOW THIS MAN RESPECT!
Strangely there was a movie that came out in 1983 called "The Prey" with the exact same plot only it was 3 couples, not just 3 women.
Considering his love for Howard Hawks, I’m sad he never got a chance to direct a western. Though, it’s understandable why, westerns were dying out when he came on the scene.
I mean, Vampires was kind Of a western 😂
@@leohcarrillo2981 true, I guess I’m saying an old school western with no twist of any sort.
Even if he didn't make an explicit western so many of his movies have very clear western influences that he may just have decided not to. Assauly on precinct 13 is probably the clearest example of "in all but setting this is a western" but the protagonist of They Live is literally a man with no name lol
@@Marabcd315 😂 fair enough
I’d like to see an episode about Stanley Kubrick’s unmade projects, particularly “Napoleon”
Edit: also Terry Gilliam’s, example: “Don Quixote”
Don Quixote got made.
The creature from the black lagoon could have been great. The video game angle is interesting too I would love it if he could go out on a high note in life for such a legend!
I'd be there for a John carpenter Santa movie, but Kurt Russell would need to be Santa.
I wish John Carpenter's Creature from the Black Lagoon got made
I didn’t know he had so many unmade movies.
