    It’s interesting that you described yourself at the beginning as someone who breaks down and analyses. But you do more, you put things back together, but very much in your own way. I’ve seen it in your podcasts. You straddle that divide between critic and creator. And that’s why I think your own fragrance line will be very interesting. I’m sorry if that all sounds over-effusive! 🙃
    I’d never thought about analysing fragrances in such a way as number 4 - but I’ll keep that in mind when I’m sampling. I had thought of buying some of the ingredients but was put off by the price but I’ll definitely look out for cheaper ones. And yeah, I definitely need to just start trying more fragrances. Thanks for this Ben, it was really useful :)

      definitely some of the prices are prohibitive for sure, especially given that they're not always representative of what you're going to get. Christie mentioned essential oils and that's a route you can go that can be cheaper and if you got an oil burner can just toss em in that too! The abyss has certainly descended btw... haha absolute train wreck!

      Our new Home Secretary has threatened Ireland with food shortages and our new foreign secretary doesn’t understand Dover. How the hell do they keep getting away with this shit?

    This was so helpful to picture it in a cube and building the structure of a perfume. It really made sense. Also, smelling everything like essential oils, etc. Thanks so much!

    Some really good tips there 😜 You ever thought of doing a blind sniff challenge where you try to identify the different perfume ingredients, to see if you can identify the individual notes? Could be a lot of fun 😀

      yeah that'd be fun, I think I saw a video.. was it Daver from fragrance Bros where he had some kit for doing that? I should check it out again and see what it was!

    Here’s something I do: I go to the Natural food outlets and smell all the essential oils. They even let me put a drop on cards I bring! I’ve been able to smell everything from carrot seed to blue tansy. Sooo many to smell for free! Thanks for making this video Ben, very encouraging!

      That's a great idea, carrot seeds are really strong aren't they? I've never smelt them I don't think, but I remember a perfume that had it listed as a note and reviews for it were very angry at the carrot seeds lol

      Talking Scents The carrot seeds reminded me of sweet, moist dirt. Definitely a unique smell. I guess if you know what you’re doing with it you can make it work in a fragrance. But on its own? It must be an acquired taste!🤔🥕🥕🥕

    Fantastic timing, I needed cheering up today. We’re all staring into the abyss now, God alone knows what Boris will put us through.

    I didn’t know you had a podcast. What’s it about?

    • @TalkingScents
      @TalkingScents  5 років тому +1

      Yeah, I mostly keep it separate since it's totally unrelated :) It's kind of weird and fringe history stuff, true crime, mysteries, and fringe-y topics. darkhistories.com if you ever did want to check it out :)

    Where can i smell musk ?

    • @TalkingScents
      @TalkingScents  4 роки тому +1

      Tricky one, your best bet to smell something like musk in isolation would probably be to buy a small amount of an ingredient like galaxolide or fixolide/tonalide. These are sythentic musks that you can use in perfumery to make a musk scent but even then you'd probably mix them with something else like suedarol or labdanum, cypriol etc. To give it a bit of a leathery animalic kick, so the scent might not be exactly what you'd expect in a perfume context. If you want to smell natural deer musks, it's available, but very expensive and pretty questionable ethically. It's also not the best in its raw form because typically a perfume would use it heavily diluted. Definitely tricky. I'd go the synthetic route personally, it's inexpensive and will give you a good idea of a commonly used ingredient 😁
