  • This might be of interest to anyone who likes old sewing machines or has never taken the lid off the machine they own. It's not intensive how-to or anything, just watching me oil three different makes of machine.

Thank you, I just bought a 1950's Brother machine set in a cabinet for $40.00 in was all dry inside so I oiled it and it runs like a dream now.

What serendipity! I look up videos explaining the oiling of older machines and up comes yours...demonstrating oiling MY Supernova! God does have a sense of humor. Thank you for showing me exactly what needs to be done.

Thank you for the instructions! I found mine at a thrift store for $50, table and sewing machine together, both in good condition. I fell in love with the look of it and can not wait to clean, oil, and sew! I do believe I will never go back to the latest models.

I love watching my Neechi run smoother and smoother as I oil it and run it more. It’s incredibly quiet and vibrant-free. Those machines were engineered just beautifully. Thank you once again.

Thank you so much for this video. I am very new to sewing. I have a new sewing machine, but it's in the shop for repairs. I was given a Necchi 523 months ago and had no idea where to apply the oil. Your video was informative and detailed. You took the time to explain everything. I've oiled my machine and now I am using my Necchi :)

Great video! Of all the old machine videos while saying “oil your machine” no one actually shows doing it. Never thought to fun machines. I now have 8! 4 years ago I had only my one Elna I bought in early 80s. And all but 2 are different brands. They dont com up in my area at all. I’m going to teach sewing soon. I use small folding card tables. Wall mart has a mini size all plastic but sturdy. Too small though. So i use extra shelves from the closet in my sewing studio. I was lucky to gain an entire building in my retirement move. Reconfiguring how i use closet gave me 4 extra shelves so i also use on the built in counters to protect them and make a quick ironing station. The builder of the home was a artist crafter so built this building.

Many of these are clones of an old Singer model, and many will say De Luxe on one of the plates. A lot of them were made for different outlets by the same companies.
I recently bought a machine that was owned by a woman's son. It is about to get some serious love and care so I can put it back to work. I explained to the gentleman, "I'm not buying this machine to flip it, I'm buying it to put it to work. It was made for Alden's Catalog Sales, and is a big, heavy beast. I started cleaning the years of grime off, and it shined up like a penny. I'm gonna convert the pedals to electronic ones, since they're so much more precise for control than the old rheostat pedals, but they'll be passed down with the machine down the road. It came in a handsome small sewing table with a flip-out lid. I ran it a bit, and it was silky-smooth. Love a great old machine without the cheap plastics!

My dad brought home an awesome old kenmore machine that has the same coloring as yours (it sounds like I'm talking about a stray animal🤣) and you're right about how gratifying it is to see it work smoother! I'm so stoked about this machine, it seems like whoever used it took good care of it

I know how you feel, I just got a blue Jones from the 1960's (?). Kenmores are usually very high quality, high end machines. There's a lot here on UA-cam about restoring and learning how to use a vintage machine. Enjoy!

They don't make sewing machines like this anymore. My mom had one of these Necchi Machines back in the day. They were so amazing. What I like about this vintage beauty is that the shuttle wasn't stationary unlike most of oscillating shuttles. The shuttle bay moved along with the needle shaft to create zig zag and decorative stitches. Plus this machine was heavy duty. It can sew denim like it was cotton candy. Its really sad they don't make them like these anymore. Great video. Thanks for posting this. Very informative.

You can still find "built like a tank" sewing machines, but they're usually the professional heavy duty industrial ones and very expensive. Hard to find a good light duty home machine these days.

I just thrifted a Necchi Nora and it is seized. The motor tries, but nothing moves. I'm gonna try first to free it up. If I cant, then I guess I'll take it to a sewing center. Wish me luck. Also thrifted a Calanda that I cleaned and oiled yesterday, and it works fine. You're right it is so gratifying that I did it with my own hands. They are excellent machines and I can't wait to use both for garments.

Could you show us how you fixed that slight zigzag that was occurring when your Neechi was set to straight stitch? I have no idea how I would fix that zigzag problem, so I’d love to learn how you fix that. Otherwise, your video was really helpful for oiling. I like how you actually run the machine while oiling it, to see all the moving points. Having it move while set to zigzag is even more brilliant. Thank you very much for your lesson...

Yeah, I've switched to synthetic oil for my machines however the marvel is still pretty decent when you've got a lot of varnish buildup. The marvel doesn't build up... In the end they're just machines that are not under any heavy pressure or heat, not like a auto engine anyway. The only problem with marvel to me is that it evaporates pretty quickly.

From the retail store Morgan's in Canada, which got bought out by The Hudson Bay co. It's kind of similar to yours, so looking forward to see, learn how this baby works!

Hello, thanks for the video! I am interested in starting to sew and would like some advice on buying a vintage machine. I would like a singer w./cams, but can't tell which one would be the best. I see lots of touch and sews, but keep hearing bad things about them. Also I have inherited some of my grandmother's old sewing accessories, a black singer buttonholer and a few different presser feet. I would love to find a machine I could use these with since her actual machine has been lost. Thanks!

MARVEL'S ...Really dude? Back in the 80's... My buds and I used to work on old American cars from the 60's 1 or 2 hundred dollar junkers. We would make jokes about that stuff AND NEVER put it in our cars. It was caustic sh+t.. I have vintage machines and can do uphoulstry, but I treat my machine to real sewing oil.
