    Video updates:
    1) The newer 2023/2024 Trek Marlin Gen 3 bikes have a hole in the back of the seat tube, so they can accept fully internal dropper posts!
    2) Another option for a Trek Marlin dropper post is to get a wireless one. Definitely more expensive but would work!
    3) You may be able to route an internal dropper if you use a different bottom bracket (i.e. hollowtech / DUB) but I have not tried either of those so I am not certain. That means there is still hope for the 2020-2022 marlins to have one routed through the BB!

    I just installed an internal routed dropper on my 2022 Marlin. There is a slit under the bottom bracket where the cables for the rear brake and rear derailleur exits. If you look closely inside the slit, up at the inside of the seat tube, there is actually a cent size hole. You can route the cable through the downtube and directly through that hole to the seat tube. It is a bit of fiddling but it can be done.

    As a 2021 Marlin owner, I was REALLY disappointed to find that there was no hole for the dropper post. Had I known this before buying, I would NOT have bought a Marlin. In fact, I would NOT have bought a Trek at all. Only reason keeping this is due to current bike shortage. I do have another bike on order and will get rid of this Marlin as soon as I get my other bike.

      The Marlins are really great bikes. I had a 2019 black and volt colored XXL Marlin 6. I loved that bike and had minor upgrades that made the bike even better. It was great starter bike for me on the trails. I recently sold it and picked up a 2021 Specialized Stumpjumper comp in an S5(xl). I dropped down a size for better handling. The stumpjumper is phenomenal but I can say the Marlin was still a solid bike.

      I also had a 21 Marlin 7, and I was disappointed with it. The fork was... Kinda garbage, which would have been ok if it had a tapered headtube, but it doesn't. I also had a number of issue with the rear wheel, which again was hard to replace as 29 inch wheels with the older QR standard are difficult to find. I ended up having to have my rear wheel replaced twice in 6 months, then started ruining the third when I sold it. Add to that the lack of an internal dropper hole in the seat tube, and it made for a rather disappointing bike.

      Yea...I'm just finding out has to be external routed (at least the seat post part). Seems just like a dumb marketing tactic to push people into more expensive bikes. For over 1k, they already had the 1 top hole drilled out, literally no other reason than monitary incentive to not drill the second, especially when the older 2019 model had it lol. Love the bike so far, but that design flaw is just retarded.

      Wow sorry I totally blanked there. There isn’t a hole in the seat tube, it actually routes internally a different way. If you flip the bike upside down you’ll see a flat slit hole that cables come out of, so you just route it there and it comes back up through the seat tube. Sorry if that explanation isn’t the best over text haha but it does work

    Great video. This is why I've chosen not to buy a new Marlin 6 and instead upgrade the drivetrain, tires and cockpit on my 2019 Marlin 7 and put in a 100% internally routed PNW Range 125 dropper post. The dropper post is in my top 3 of game changing upgrades. along with the 1x10 drivetrain and tubeless tire conversion. As for the structural soundness of the frame, I'm technically obese and over age 50 and have taken several bad falls on it. I took it to my LBS and they didn't raise any concerns after a particularly bad crash that put me in the hospital last fall. I'm literally a crash test dummy but me and my Marlin are still hitting the trails - though I admit I'm taking it very easy now!

    Is there an obvious reason as to why they left out the hole on the newer frames? Would the thinking have been that having that hole there unused would enable a bit of grit and moisture to get inside the frame and fall down to the bottom bracket?

      Not sure honestly. I speculated that it could be so they would push people to purchase the higher end models like the Roscoe and X-Caliber, but they released new marlins recently with the dropper compatibility so that may not be exactly right.

    I was curious about the frame warranty, so I took a look at the paperwork and for my 2022 Marlin 6, changing any component voids the entire warranty. So if you install any dropper your warranty is gone whether you drill a hole to allow for internal routing, or not. Changing the fork also voids the warranty and I’ve already done that so I guess warranty isn’t something I need to worry about when installing my new dropper.

    • @TalalipopMTB
      @TalalipopMTB  10 місяців тому

      Trek’s warranty team is pretty good in my opinion. Your warranty on the bike should still be valid as long as the issue isn’t related to the part you installed. If you put a new fork on your bike and the frame cracks somewhere else, your warranty should still be valid to replace the frame. That’s my experience from working at Trek, but there could be some cases where the line is harder to draw

    As a marlin 4 owner (baught it in 2021) im pretty sure the warranty is over anyhow, so if i was to drill a hole in the frame for the internal dropper post, would it weaken the aluminum frame significantly enough where its dangerous to ride or is it just from a 'im not responsible for you getting hurt' standpoint? Because i really need a dropper post as i have back condotions but riding is whats keeping me going, so having an adjustable seat will be a game changer..... but i dont have a spare £1500 to get a new bike just for a lousy hole😂

    • @TalalipopMTB

      Trek warranties bike frames for life, so you’re warranty fortunately or unfortunately won’t ever end. I’ve seen people drill that hole before and be fine and I personally think it’s more related to your second point of “we’re not responsible for you getting hurt.” I won’t tell you to do it either haha, but I think it should be fine. There’s always the option of an externally routed dropper post though which would be easier

I can’t remember which bike it was I wanted but I was sold the Trek 3500 instead. I have a model in mind with a budget of $1500 but I’m afraid that if I go back to the same Trek store that they may end up selling me something different that I don’t want. Although I am kinda stuck between the Trek Roscoe 7 or the Giant Fathom 2. I really like the Fathom’s frame design with the third bottlecage attachment spots on the downside tube. The Roscoe 7 doesn’t have that option. I want the plus size tires and air shocks along with a dropper post. The Trek 3500 I had before it was stolen was okay for road use but I didn’t like how it handled on the trails with the front coil shocks and the smaller size tires when riding in loose n sandy dry washes. My plan is to get a bike when the supply issues are resolved so that I can hit the Stagecoach 400 & the Impossible Trail in the future. I just really need some advice on which on I should get. TIA

    About to switch to hollowtech ii, gonna try routing internally to see if it works. Poor placement of bottle cage mounts on the seat tube (too high up) prohibit use of a dropper with much travel anyway, sadly

      @Lips It fits, if using Jagwire Pro's dropper cable. It's 0.8mm in diameter rather than the usual 1.2mm cable so it clears the Hollowtech II BB. Unfortunately, the bottle cage lugs stop the dropper from going down far enough, so I actually took it off. Lol

    I saw an interesting way to route the cable and wanted to hear your opinion. The person internally routed but used the bottom hole for the water bottle then routed it down and up through the frame. Hopefully that makes sense.

    • @TalalipopMTB
      @TalalipopMTB  3 роки тому

      Does that mean they did not use the hole at the top of the frame at all? I’m imagining a half inside / half outside routing style here but I may be misinterpreting it

      @@TalalipopMTB yeah so half inside half out. After more talking with him I guess he drilled out the bottom rivet for the bottle cage. Then routed the cable from that hole up to internal dropper. Ran the cable down and through the holes near the bb and up out the frame.

    • @LindonSlaght
      @LindonSlaght 2 роки тому

      My bike (2023 Marlin 7) is actually getting that upgrade right now. It comes with 28 teeth chain ring, I'm upgrading to a 32. Combined with the slower speed, it was also because of the top 2 gears being useless because at the point I needed them for my strength, I wouldn't have traction unless I was on pavement.

  • @NocturnalEvo
    @NocturnalEvo 3 роки тому +2

    Question for you, i purchased my 2022 Marlin 5 pre-owned, so i'm not the original owner and I don't have any proof of original purchase, which means, I actually don't have a warranty any further as I cannot produce the original proof of purchase. So since I already don't have warranty, I'd be okay to drill that hole in the seat tube, but wondering why you think there will be structural damage? TREK did it on the 2019's as per your video. I may mar the paint a bit, but just trying to understand what kind of structural damage drilling a hole would do.

    • @MartinTheGhost
      @MartinTheGhost 3 роки тому

      it's close to the bb and you'll have stresses going down the tube due to you sitting on top of it which can couse some unwanted stresses on the little hole you just drilled
      there's a reason why there is a thicker part around the 2019 dropper hole as it is for strength

    its very odd that trek would go from including that back hole in the older models to now only including 1 of 2 holes. suppose that's what sets these beginner bikes apart from their more expensive bikes. which is unfortunate, cause for some this bike is already pretty pricey.
