Ive replaced a ton of those goodman condenser coils for refrigerant leaks! Always at the loops on the rails. The heat pumps leak at the suction equalizer and txv distribution tubes.
Good ole Goodman..junk heat pumps. I always install the drier outside the unit and put a piece of 3/8 copper that I shape into a `J` with a spring bender in the old ones place so when the unit inevitably fails again it will be easier to replace. Cool video. I can`t wait for the next one.

Please always check the low side test pressure listed on the system data plate before pressure testing with nitrogen! The compressors glassed in terminals can be damaged or blow out if that pressure is exceeded.
Robinaire 14010A, it's not cheap but I like it better than the cheaper digitals I've tried. I can't compare it to the BluVac because I don't have one! Haha
I had 3 Goodman coils just this last summer with leaks in the same area not heat pumps but same 5ml (I believe the size) copper . I was able to repair the leaks without much compromise to the fins. Only reason I repaired them was due to the fact the coils were back order according to the Goodman out here in California.
I hope I can get some answers here? Any commits will be so helpful. We had a whole new unit installed exactly two weeks ago. The old unit was used three years and stopped blowing cold air. I live in a mobile home with a Coleman Nat. Gas furnace. The evap coil is installed the the bottom of the furnace. We got a grant through the city to replace it, the roof and water heater. The general contractor the city used farmed out the jobs. We had no say! They replaced a Day/Night unit with Goodman. The new coil pack is basically the same Aspen unit that was in there. The next morning after it was installed 10-16-19 I turned on my heater and is smelled like oil was burning. My husband and I had burning eyes, throat and had a headache. I called the HVAC guy, he said this is to be expected. The coil packs are drenched in oil before they ship. It will take a couple of days to burn off. A week later he was here with the city inspector and I told him it still stinks. He just shook his head yes. Were in the Cali high desert and its cold, we need our heater. Another four or five days of it, I call him again. Him and his helper come out, yep I smell what your talking about, took everything off so he could see the coil pack, looked at it! Checked out my furnace. No problems, told me to call the gas company, actually left the cabinet unsealed and left. My husband is smart and handy and sealed everything back up. I ask the guy, do you think anything is leaking? No, no way. My husband kept the old unit and found a label that listed all these diff things we shouldn't be breathing, a big CAUTION TAG! I looked it all up, if its leaking into heat, it turns into phosgene gas. The general contractor was here two days ago, he was in here smelling it. He ask, did he do a leak test! NO! Told him how he left it. My house and everything in it smells like this odor. My furniture, curtains, everything. I have heart and lung problems😔. The City inspector was supposed to do the final inspection yesterday, he called and won't come out until Monday. I've been on a forum and ask questions, was told we're probably smelling the new roof! The HVAC guy,and my husband went up and checked the flue. I know in heart we are being poisoned, my husband is going to bleed off the freon and leave it alone. I ask him to not, until the city inspector comes. These flakes don't deserve to be paid. I'm sorry for venting, but I'm at my wits end.
nice vid w steady camera. Lot of little leaks. What is the soap bubble compound called? Nice to see the brazing part. No heat sink needed for the new filter dryer install? What pressure did you have the nitrogen running during the brazing? When you put the liquid in, high side only? Why not put the new schaders in when there is no pressure instead of putting them in at the end of the job? Sorry for all the questions, I'm a new tech learning. Great vid! Pleasure to watch. :)
I'm glad you subscribed too! Thanks for watching! Video came out pretty well but was a challenge to edit, the hat came is nice but trying to keep my work in the frame can be a pain!
I.am.also looking to switch trades. I could do just about anything. But the tech stuff is for pros. And u have to follow that as too many fly by nights under price. . There is too much work for everybody, but why undersell when u could make a good decent living ?
Under warranty it's a no Brainier! Out of warranty the coil may be very closely priced to a new condenser. Every company is different. My preference would be to replace the condenser completely simply because that is actually easier than replacing the coil only.
Great video Stephen. Question, why not move the filter drier outside the valves so you can do a pump down instead of a recovery for a future coil cleaning or replacement. Just curious, love the videos. Keep up the good work. Ray
I could've done so but didn't think to bother until after it was sweat in. My other excuse is that I didn't have any fittings or my swagger to straight pipe it...
Is the reason you replaced a leaking, repairable, copper coil, because Goodman will honor its replacement under warranty? Very good showing the nitrogen purge. I never use the N regulator while purging. It lends to the N shutting down on low pressures, or blowing right thru the gas. I use a flow meter with just a minuscule creeping flow, at about 10 or 15. This also helps not to blow out the molten braze from the joint. It is a pain in the ass though switching gauges back and fourth. I suppose you could use a dedicated 15 instead of using a 40 CF Nitro, this would be much lighter. I find that anything that makes life easier I tend to adopt into practice.
Stephen Rardon Regulators are used for pressure testing. A flow meter is the proper tool for purging. Do an initial heavy purge to flood the line, then set the flow meter until the ball just barely rises. If the outlet of the piping is large, where the nitrogen is exiting the system , tape it off and punch a small hole. Hold a lit match up to the hole. If the flow is sufficient, the match will go out due to lack of oxygen. As long as the pipe is flooded with nitrogen, and slightly moving, any scale will be prevented from forming. We had to be certified for medical gas piping, and this is the proper way. It also conserves nitrogen, which has gotten terribly expensive in our area.
Digging the bee/poison ivy check jab. That Princess guy uses kneepads, good thing you went rogue. Do you prefer the rosebud for all brazing, do you go thru tanks quicker? I also like the gators, got cobras recently for adjustment security. Will you be copywriting your videos so other people cannot cash in or take credit.
You're all questions huh!? Yes, I generally prefer the bud tip for my brazing, I picked it up on a whim but have enjoyed it and had trouble with the standard tip when I have to use someone else's torch. I'm not too worried about having my crap embedded on another site at the moment. I do this for fun and figure it can't hurt to get a little further reach if someone embedded my videos. If you disable embedding you can't share it on Facebook or Twitter so I'm reluctant to nix that feature at this point.
Why do you sweat out a dryer instead of cutting it out? I was taught that heating a dryer introduces the contaminants that it has collected back into the system.
I typically would sweat out a drier so that I didn’t end up short on the copper. If I cut it out and didn’t have extra pipe to make up a short section then I’d be screwed.
Pretty soon quality contractors will get paid like doctors! And why shouldn't we...we don't rely on other companies to help people. i.e. pharmaceutical companies.
Wow love the nitrogen regulator!! So quick and easy... How much did it cost and where did you find it? Thanks for the informational videos btw. I've been doing residential install for over 2 years and the vids helped a lot!
Cichlidae Mayhem the regulator is made by Western Enterprises and they have two models- the VN250 and the VN500 (250 psi and 500 psi maximum pressure test setting)
How much does this cost generally? My goodman developed a pinhole leak on top above the electrical. It looks like the lid vibrated on it over the years and rubbed a hole in it
Wont lie in almost 20 years i've never had to replace a condenser coil. I loved the right angle dewalt attachment, i want one for my rigid drills now. Great job.
Yes, it was a 5mm, not too sure I like the idea of smaller tubes, seems that they'd need to be a lot thinner copper to make them that small. I was a little concerned to see the bottom tube of the coil so close to the bottom pan of the unit. We all know that things vibrate and that could cause a rub leak over time, I think.
No little bushings or anything on it either? Guess time will tell. What is odd to me that so many indoor coils leaked but hardly any outdoor coils. Seems like if a little hairspray and other vocs could eat right through it - well it must be pretty thin.
True, it is unusual that the indoor leaks so often. You'd think that with the harsh elements outside that coil would be worse off! Guess the conditions inside are killer!
your work has been an amazing ! but as a budding engineer i have one question, why can't we use other gasses apart from using Nitrogen to test the leak ? thnks again
Nitrogen is mainly an inert gas and it is also supposed to be dry so that moisture is not introduced into the system. Also, only trace amounts of refrigerant are allowed if the system is to be leak tested if the system is void of its refrigerant. Nitrogen is relatively cheap.
The smallest ones we get here are 10 liter, they look about twice as tall as the ones you have, they are ok just like to fall over unless tied up to something!
Sometimes I'd rather have a larger tank until I have to put it into this tiny van I'm using. I end up carrying one with me and if I need to make a repair and use nitro I'll grab a second tank for that day so I don't run out, hopefully.
When you had some-very little-refrigerant in the system when you added the nitrogen, how did you recover the freon? Do you pump both the freon and the nitrogen into a recovery tank? Thanks for the video.
+Eric S back-seated, with this valve there really is only back-seated and front-seated. The Gauge port is always open and the only thing that is closed is the gate between the lineset piping and the compressor piping.
RTU Heatpump Pack TXV Repair i talk about it in this video a few minutes in. VN-500 by Western Enterprise www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CGIQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwesternenterprises.com%2Fenterprises%2Fregulators%2Fhvac-regulators%2F&ei=x8VNU4-ZHKHUsASR0IHYBA&usg=AFQjCNHNrhxeV7vPDpYSKgv6TzPtuf9STw&sig2=IOBj5x9sVoCED7UzPvIb2Q&bvm=bv.64764171,d.cWc
I'm wondering on this one, did the condenser fan motor shit the bed, and no high pressure switch? I could change these things all day long, super easy, yours just seemed to have a lot of leaks at the u bends
have a nordyne package unit runs fine in ac mode but when it switch's to heat it goes into a vacum should I replace outdoor coil if I blow through the system with nitrogen if it doesn't work ???
the heatpump package unit has a two piston no txv what I'm thinking something is either clogging the outdoor piston so I'm blow out the whole system with nitrogen put new piston back in charge it back up cause the unit is a 2016 airtemp package heatpump
I just got my Testo 570. I am still in the process of familiarizing myself with its' function. I notice it can be used with the Testo 552 vacuum gauge, capable, of reading to zero microns. I have not seen the cool tools dial type you have in this video. How does it work? How long did the condenser change-out take to complete?
Great video and professional work discipline. Nice preview for prospective condenser work needed on a unit with most of it's condenser coil fins flattened due to errant cleaning with high pressure water. Once a fin comb on the fins seems futile, this will most likely be the next option. By the way, what is the price range for replacement of a condenser coil for a standard unit similar to the one in your video.
Never place replacement dryer inside a unit If it stops up you think you have a low charge. Ever new dry units i remove to outside of the unit. I seen may goodman filter stop up.
I'll admit it's not a great idea to put the drier inside the unit but to say Never to do it is a little presumptuous. The factory decided to put it there and if you return a new drier to the factory location you can't say that's wrong. I prefer it To have never been inside the unit at all but there are always extenuating circumstances with every service call or install Job.
By moving it to behind service valve it easier to change and see if it oil logged. Plus easy to change. MFG place it inside because most people will never install it on line set. Not all MFG place one inside the unit.
Stephen Rardon You do a good job with your videos. I appreciate them very much. You should have your own company -- but there are a lot of headaches that goes with that.... I know.
Thanks for watching, it's been a long time since I bought the tip and I don't remember. It's sort of a rose bud style tip- multiple pin holes at the end. Haven't seen one like it since! I'll be sad when this one breaks.
Why would you just replace coils. I understand if it's under warranty but isn't it penny wise and pound foolish not to just replace the whole condensing unit?
By the book Stephen. Goodman did a good thing by putting the dryer inside the outdoor unit. They ensure one is added during install. That being said whenever I pull one out I always install it back on the lineset. That way if there is ever another repair it will be easy to replace the dryer. Not saying what you did was wrong it's just for ease of the next guy or maybe even you.
T&N Services LLC. I had considered relocating the drier AFTER I sweat it in...it wasn't that bad since the coil was off but I can see that it'd be a pain if I had to do an evap swap and change the drier then. Would be harder at that point, guess I'll learn my lesson eventually!
+Stephen Rardon (HVAC with Stephen Rardon) Oh ok thank you, now if I heard correctly you can keep the nitrogen running through the system while you were brazing all that you did in your video?
+Joshua Truax yes, nitrogen is trickling through the pipes whenever i put a torch to the pipes. it keeps the inside of the pipe clean of any carbon (black crap) while brazing.
When I used a standard regulator I would adjust with the hose next to my ear where I could just barely hear and feel it flowing. Since then I've been using the VN-500 by Western Enterprises which has a automatic setting for brazing that flows just enough to do the job and keep from blowing out your solder.
Ive replaced a ton of those goodman condenser coils for refrigerant leaks! Always at the loops on the rails. The heat pumps leak at the suction equalizer and txv distribution tubes.
good job on the condenser coil replacement
Thanks Steve! Means a lot.

I enjoy watching a master HVAC tech doing a job perfectly. Never accepting anything other than true excellence. Every tech can learn from watching
Thanks for watching Ryan!

I like this video. I learned a lot about how replace a condensing coil.
Thanks for watching Jacob
Notice how they hold the charge back in cool on those 5mm units with the compensator location on this one. Usually they hold it back in heat.
Nice work Stephen. That was a young unit!
Well done Stephen...
good job on the coil replacement. I need to get one of those angle attachments for the drill
I got mine at Lowe's

Beautiful repair Stephen!! Looks like you used some of appliance guy's tech tips in this one.
Yep, gotta make sure that the work area is clear of natural hazards!!
Next time make sure you check for wasps too! You can never be to
careful.
Might as well keep an eye out for Bigfoot and Gravedigger too! Lol

I hope I can get some answers here? Any commits will be so helpful. We had a whole new unit installed exactly two weeks ago. The old unit was used three years and stopped blowing cold air. A rosebud tip has 6 wholes inside the end of your nozzle which provides more heat way more than a#2 or #3 tip
The tip I have has 8 pin holes on the tip. I like it very much

Excellent job. Thanks for sharing.
good job thanks for show us
pardon the dumb question steve. why a bigger hose for your vac pump. is it faster? and do you still let it run for an hour when your sucking it down?
Great video Stephen. Question, why not move the filter drier outside the valves so you can do a pump down instead of a recovery for a future coil cleaning or replacement. Just curious, love the videos. Keep up the good work.

To me it's worth the $150!
Hi Stephen, my testo reseller told me not to use nitrogen with those digital manifold. Nitrogen can break the electronic system.
+Paul MARIE I don't know how that's possible when they can handle very high refrigerant pressure. Your reseller seems to be confused.
I don't know too. I discussed about it with some french technicians around the country. They also received those instruction from their supplier.
Ooohh! Somebody disliked me! LOL Thanks Mr Appliance!
Nice work 👍
Nice work not to many ppl do it by the book out there

you did a good job man !
Thanks for watching +Chandara Thach
Wouldn't you want to cut off the old filter/dryer to avoid the torch boiling any water it has taken up and releasing it into the system?
Maybe, it's the way I've always done it and haven't had any issues with pulling good vacuums. Thanks for watching
Was this a 5mm coil? Those Chinese accumulators leak on the bottom too I've done about 5 of those.

I keep two on the truck so i always have a full one, some of the systems i do will take a whole tank to get some good pressure in them!
is Goodman a good choice 4 new hvac system
Stephen are you using oxy/aceteline , and if so what size tip on your torch ,it looked like a rosebud tip. Thanks in advance for your quality video's
I don't recall the model or brand but if you Check out Oakwood Heating and Cooling on Google+ he should be able to get
You that info
How were the service valves seated during this whole process?
When you had some-very little-refrigerant in the system when you added the nitrogen, how did you recover the freon? Do you pump both the freon and the nitrogen into a recovery tank?
Thanks for the video.
+amtpdb1 no, with the little amount of refrigerant in there EPA says you can just blow that to the atmoshpere as they classify it as "deminimus"
+Patrick Rickman Thanks
When you first hooked up the gauge in the video, were the king valves back-seated or mid-seated?
+Eric S back-seated, with this valve there really is only back-seated and front-seated. The Gauge port is always open and the only thing that is closed is the gate between the lineset piping and the compressor piping.
I just have to hear it in a quite place. No big problem
Ok, just making sure
That accumulator will be the next leak lol
nice one sir
Nice job. I have never seen a regulator like that What kind is it?
RTU Heatpump Pack TXV Repair
i talk about it in this video a few minutes in.

Mr radon speaks well..
I'm wondering on this one, did the condenser fan motor shit the bed, and no high pressure switch? I could change these things all day long, super easy, yours just seemed to have a lot of leaks at the u bends
+mychoclabwinston don't think there were any other issues with the unit
Whats the price difference on customer end for an entire condensor unit vs condensor coil replacement?
Can be pretty significant if there is no warranty. Our book price for condenser coil out of warranty starts at $1900 and goes up
send the types of wiring diagram charts of package ACS sir ji
Nice job bro !!!
Thanks Harry, you got any extra Colgate!?
I went to crest its cheeper lol
Hahaha
What is that scale that says cool tools? A micron gauge? Never seen that before
+freddy hidalgo it is a micron gauge by Robinaire old school analog but very solid
What is the cost of this repair? I have to replace my coil as well and the install didn't fill out the paperwork for the extended warranty. TIA
+CMarie Swan our pricing without warranty is near $2000
have a nordyne package unit runs fine in ac mode but when it switch's to heat it goes into a vacum should I replace outdoor coil if I blow through the system with nitrogen if it doesn't work ???
Travis Scott I'd need more details to make that judgement but I'd take a serious look at the metering device before changing a coil
the heatpump package unit has a two piston no txv what I'm thinking something is either clogging the outdoor piston so I'm blow out the whole system with nitrogen put new piston back in charge it back up cause the unit is a 2016 airtemp package heatpump
Travis Scott give it a shot, good luck!
so it looks like there are 2 dryers, but you changed only one. Why didn't you change the other one?
Honestly I don't remember the details of this repair.
Online Police Second "dryer" is a muffler. ;)
I am on a HVACR program now. Is the pressure should be set less than the suction line pressure/ the low pressure on the chart?
There is a lot more to it than just pressures. Check out hvac school on Facebook, they have tons of great articles and commentary.
Took about 3.5/4 hours with a vacuum pulled for no less than one hour. The micron gauge is and old school analog runs around $500
That was a good job. Is there a problem using the micron gauge on the 570? I notice the use of a separate gauge set up on different videos.
The 570's built in micron gauge doesn't read any lower than 500 microns...
Great job and great video. Congrats and by the way excellent tools very professional
How much do you charge to do a job like that? Seems time consuming. I would have just replaced the unit.
+reeceeooo it is time consuming, this was a warranty job so we're stuck with goodmans decision
Good video brother.
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!
No Prob. Love the A/C stuff.
👍
Check out Jim Pellitinato. (I think that is the proper spelling).
Jonny Cat yeah, i've been watching him for awhile now.
Some of the cheap brands are a bad deal . Temp star carrier high failer rate
So blue hose always goes to the insulated line?
On a straight AC unit, yes
Never place replacement dryer inside a unit If it stops up you think you have a low charge. Ever new dry units i remove to outside of the unit. I seen may goodman filter stop up.
I'll admit it's not a great idea to put the drier inside the unit but to say Never to do it is a little presumptuous. The factory decided to put it there and if you return a new drier to the factory location you can't say that's wrong. I prefer it
To have never been inside the unit at all but there are always extenuating circumstances with every service call or install
Job.
By moving it to behind service valve it easier to change and see if it oil logged. Plus easy to change. MFG place it inside because most people will never install it on line set. Not all MFG place one inside the unit.
I know what you're saying, just don't agree that it should never be left Inside is all.
Has Goodman addressed this problem?
Not that I am aware of
Stephen Rardon You do a good job with your videos. I appreciate them very much. You should have your own company -- but there are a lot of headaches that goes with that.... I know.
Thanks ritewayguy I haven't worked up the courage to dive into my own company yet. Yet...
You are too cool and collected . Just like Steve lav u guys should be teaching . Take this from a guy looking to get in the business
Nice work, what size brazing tip is that?
Thanks for watching, it's been a long time since I bought the tip and I don't remember. It's sort of a rose bud style tip- multiple pin holes at the end. Haven't seen one like it since! I'll be sad when this one breaks.
Thanks I'll look for it it does the job
Did you have a Bee pistol just in case?
No, but I should as summer comes along.
Great detailed work.
Nice video...... How old was that unit?
Joelhomecomfort It was still under warranty, so, less than 5 years.
Why would you just replace coils. I understand if it's under warranty but isn't it penny wise and pound foolish not to just replace the whole condensing unit?
+David Oringer Goodman wouldn't go for it, they were willing to warranty the coil only.
Great job replacing a coil on a POS that should of been tossed in the dumpster. I like your taste in tools Kimpex, Testo first class bud.
Hvac Service: Replacing a Condenser Coil
That was artistry if I ever saw art in HVAC . Beautiful video two thumbs up.... :D
-Mike
Gee Mike, your gonna make me blush!
Thanks!
Lol lol.....
Would be harder at that point, guess I'll learn my lesson eventually!
do u have to evac the system or can u just pump it down to replace the coil?
The outdoor coil requires a full recovery, with the indoor coil sometimes a pump down is ok.
thanx for the rapid replay. I'm just a home owner. so I will have to hire this one out. love your show brother.
Thanks for watching Shawn Drossart
I am in winnipeg manitoba can what is ur code for nitro test and evacuating test 150psi and 500 microns here?
we don't have specific code that is regulated in any way, some contractors don't do either pressure or micron tests.
+Stephen Rardon (HVAC no code?some don't do pressure or evacuation test how do they know if all moisture is out and no leaks?
What is the dryer filters main purpose for the unit?
+Joshua Truax pretty much what it's named, dries up moisture and filters junk out of the refrigerant, if there is any
+Stephen Rardon (HVAC with Stephen Rardon) Oh ok thank you, now if I heard correctly you can keep the nitrogen running through the system while you were brazing all that you did in your video?
+Joshua Truax yes, nitrogen is trickling through the pipes whenever i put a torch to the pipes. it keeps the inside of the pipe clean of any carbon (black crap) while brazing.
Nice video Stephen , have one question for you , how much nitrogen flow you usually run when your brazing? Thanks
When I used a standard regulator I would adjust with the hose next to my ear where I could just barely hear and feel it flowing. Since then I've been using the VN-500 by Western Enterprises which has a automatic setting for brazing that flows just enough to do the job and keep from blowing out your solder.
Stephen Rardon ohhh ok thanks Stephen Reardon
