If 8 out of 10 families get more money back in rebate than they pay in tax, why was it necessary to pause carbon tax increases on home heating oil for Atlantic Canadians? Doesn’t the pause make them worse off?
Here's a thought. Fuel is used for the transportation of goods at every level of the supply chain and grocery stores will have to heat their stores. Carbon tax increases the cost of transportation and heating... do we really expect the corporations to absorb the cost of carbon taxes instead of passing it on to the consumers?
If you watched the video the math works out to 0.15% that business pay more in costs. So a tiny tiny fraction of a percent of inflation is due to carbon tax. You goof
I don't think you understand what the purpose of the tax is. The tax isn't meant to change carbon producing behaviours. For the average citizien, this doesn't impact them even after business adjust for added cost because these people are getting money back to cover these offsets.
Large business's have CEO's who get bonus's which is deducted from the corporate tax being paid. Remember PM Harper ? Well, it was his corporate scheme to lower the corporate tax and did so even though nobody took to the streets to demand lower corporate taxes. A few weeks later, he came up with the scheme and premise to inform Canadians that Canada could no longer afford Canada Pension. That blew up in his face and now Poilivre is the next Corporate Messiah to run for PM which brings me to wonder who will pay for all the things that lower corporate taxes no longer pays for ? Well, higher taxes along with a higher deficit may be passed on while the banks provide more credit cards with higher interest with their own cash back schemes. Who pays ? Well, it isn 't the retailers as they simply charge more for their goods and services with a little extra so they get some cash back too. Guess you pays the higher prices or do you really believe it all comes down to higher shipping and productions costs ?

nobody will. the first issue is that a govt that administers this will immediately eat up ten percent. any economist that tells you eight in ten families who pay eight dollars into this - and gets ten dollars back....is a muppet. further, taxes shrink economies. lastly and this is the big one.... carbon taxing is ineffective at two things. it doesn't change behavior and it fails to lower emissions. it's an antiquated idea from two decades ago where other countries particularly scandinavian ones have abandoned carbon tax schemes for more intelligent ideas. in particular investment in new and developing technologies. this is where the answer is. not tax..
Very misleading as most restaurants operate with natural gas to cook food. Higher costs at restaurants equal higher prices. How can anyone say that they dont eat out, or cook at home, and are not affected?. No one will be able to just get free money as nothing is free from government, just a way to take someone else money and hand it to another group.
induction cooking is now as fast as gas, and uses 90% less electricity than old electric stoves... In the rest of the world, induction cooking has been popular for decades, because it's cheaper and easier to work with.
Have you ever been to any, any restaurant and ask the cook if they can get any work done with induction stove? Do you think a family owned business struggling to make ends meet will spend thousands in pots and pans induction compatible?
This guy is only half right. Fuel price goes up. Transportation cost goes up. Who will absorb that cost? Naturally businesses will not. Pass on to consumers.
Businesses always eat up the cost of extra taxes and fees. Just means less dividends for shareholders. Don’t believe me? Look at the UK and their air passenger duty. It caused airfares to drop!
This analysis does actually help a it to understand the numbers, though as with most it’s still missing some fundamental aspects. One being what is surely the astronomical cost to taxpayers to fund the government (and banking) administration of this tax and return scheme. Second, is it having the desired effect - are people buying and burning less fossil fuel? That should be easy to find out. Third and most importantly, is it having any measurable effect on climate change? When asked, the experts say “it’s complicated”. But we’re doing it anyway despite the fact that Canada’s contribution to GHGs are miniscule on the global scale. Rather than continue a dubious social engineering experiment, we should be funding R&D toward migration to alternative energy such as nuclear and to adaptation of human life in a changing climate (if, in fact, it is changing fundamentally or only cyclically).
Dear CBC, explain to me how are long haul trucks supposed to stop their emissions? By not operating? There sure aren't emission free alternatives for those vehicles, are there? Or are we supposed to stop eating instead?
Yes! If the rail companies can get their heads out of their asses: they should be able to handle the long-distance movement of goods. Since rails don't move: they can electrify quite easily without massive batteries (using overhead lines). The problem is that North American rail companies are currently obsessed with "precision scheduled railroading". This is a system of cost-cutting involving running overly long trains to save on infrastructure and staffing costs. The problems are: 1. Long trains no longer fit in sidings, so trains can't pass one another 2. Long trains get delayed, so staff are forced to work unpredictable hours 3. The lack of scheduling means that the railroads can only move low-value bulk freight.
@@zen1647 if you minimize the weight of the load, you need more loads. 1500km takes around 500 litres of diesel at max legal weight. North American rail is responsible for a significant amount of carbon emissions. It may be an alternative in the future, but it is not a viable choice to reduce emissions today.

Well, let me tell you how much I have done. The average Canadian family of 4 waste about 1000-1500 dollars of food they bought from the store each year. Yes, but I think you are overestimating how much shipping cost is fuel. A loaded semi hauls around 40k of goods. A fully loaded semi uses 40 litre of diesel per 100m. Carbon tax is at 14 cents a litre which means if you are delivering 40k lb of cabbages it will use 800l of gas and pay 120 in carbon tax. Divide that among the cabbages, and you will get an increase of 0.3cents per lb of cabbage. If you go, what if they only carry 20k lb, the semi will also use less diesel, and 2000km will cost around 0.4 cents per lb of cabbage. A little bit more but not significantly more. But since those numbers are never published, one can only guess how much that actually is. The only clear thing, is that these numbers posted make zero sense and are designed to make people believe that they are getting more back than they pay. The real math is insanely simple. Show us how much the government raked in from carbon tax vs how much they paid out in rebates. But I'm guessing we will never see that because that would be actual reporting and not propoganda.
@@planefan082 Are you saying that you get more back because of what the Libs put in your bank account? Did you even read my post? The math is not hard. You are definitely paying more than that.

I can't just not heat my house. I can't just not drive to the next town to do my job. I can't just not eat This tax is punitive, accomplishes nothing and should be removed immediately.
You can take advantage of the Canada Greener Homes Initiative. An electric car with a 40kWh battery has "next city" capability: allowing you to go about 100km on 32kWh, and then fast charging to 80% (32kWh) before returning. Short-haul transport can be electrified. Long-haul rail transport can also be electrified: by that requires the north American rail companies to take their heads out of their asses (or rail corridor nationalization on both sides of the border). North American rail companies are currently obsessed with "precision scheduled railroading".
No carbon tax on electricity. Sorry that is not true. You pay carbon tax on grid infrastructure maintenance. This is including repair crews, shipping electrical equipments/parts on gas powered vehicles... even bolts and nuts manufactured and use by your electricity utility company.
(1) What province do you live in. (BC and Quebec not on the federal plan) (2) Did you file your income taxes? (Don't actually answer, but that is one of the things that is needed in order to get the rebate according to the gov website)
To what degree has the carbon tax actually changed consumer behaviour since it was introduced? Making gasoline more expensive, for example, has no significant impact on its consumption by individuals who need to commute by car to their work every day, or no significant impact on energy costs relating to transportation of goods in our economy. Until there are realistic alternatives to existing energy sources, current levels of energy consumption for the most part will need to continue. Also, while this carbon tax will continue to increase the cost of everything, I doubt it will have any significant impact in terms of reducing global warming in future? It's all smoke and mirrors!
So as a single individual, I pay about $10 extra for each gas refilling and then $80 back at the end of the year. And I an not even couting the carbon tax in the utility bills because where I live, that is the only option available there. Carbon task makes sense for people without cars, who don't work, who never take vacation and never fly, lives in an igloo and grow their own food AND have plenty of children
The thing is we will be paying way more than this, as it won't be just us paying for the carbon tax directly, but every single product we buy will also have this tax applied and the costs will be passed down to us. Everything shipped be it food, fuel, products, etc. all requires transportation, which requires fuel, particularly in this day and age of globalization. Then there will be all the taxes applied to this damn tax. And what exactly will this do for the environment, my bet is absolutely nothing.
I don't understand. Would the money the government collects from taxing these companies not get distributed back to the consumers as part of the rebate? If that is the case, then it may change my opinion, but I don't know why that would be true.
I run a convenience/snack store. Since I started doing this 3 years ago, the costs to purchase all my products have doubled at MINIMUM, and in many cases, tripled. It's hilarious for people who directly deal with supply chains to look at the TV people as they repeatedly assure us that everything is supposedly fine and inflation is supposedly only slightly higher than usual
VERY poor selection of opinions from so-called experts. “According to Grain Farmers of Ontario, they're going to see an additional $2.7 billion worth of expense associated with carbon tax. If you talk to vegetable growers by the year 2030, carbon tax is going to add on an additional $90,000 per acre in carbon tax. That's not sustainable.” It appears none of the so-called experts actually own a farm or even know anyone who owns a farm. . VERY slanted
The emissions from operating farm vehicles and equipment are wholly or partially exempt from the carbon tax. A private member’s bill, which passed the House of Commons last spring, and is now with the Senate, could further expand those exemptions to propane and natural gas, which are used to dry crops for storage and transport after harvest.
The Taxes that we don't see, Product from the wheat silos to the producer? Producer to the distributor? Distributor to the Wholesaler? Wholesaler to the retail store... now add the packaging.Take a look at the utility costs of a grocery store and compare the costs of the heating alone since the carbon tax was introduced. Its very sobering.
Same I have yet to get even one rebate payment, my brother got one rebate of about $120 then nothing after that. We have to pay more for everything so where's all our money we're supposed to get back? In their pockets not ours...
I did not expect to hear anything but praise in a CBC production. When the federal government is paying the bill to CBC to operate it would be prudent of them to tow the party line. As for facts I did have to chuckle on how only half of the facts were being explored fully. And half truths being offered for consumption. Again, folks must do their own research and form their own educated opinions. As a small business owner I can tell you, there is carbon fees being added by every business that handles the goods you buy. The small business pay all the carbon taxes and don't receive a penny back. We ALL pay SO much more than the government will ever let on or can hide in a spreadsheet.
Also my carbon tax on my last natural gas bill was $127 for one month. I live in a 30 year old split level standard sized home and we run the heat at 20c. It's been the mildest winter in alberta I can remember ever. Stop pulling the wool over peoples eyes.
Thankfully it’s been a mild winter in Alberta . I started keeping my furnace at 60F at night and 65-68 F daytime. I turned off my gas hot water heater mid Dec. I don’t own a car. My heating bill was $139.00 while the cost of natural gas used was $26:33. I’m a disabled senior and waiting 3 months for a small rebate isn’t workable. I’m fortunate my bank/grocery store is across the street. I push a shopping 🛒 home once a month. When the grocery store offers 15% discount. I shop once a month. I’m barely able to afford my utilities. Groceries is like window shopping, looking for the cheapest food options. No one complains when volcano’s erupt, can’t control what they spew! Plus the earth has gone through natural cycles prior to humans.
If you live in rural Canada you do not have any option to drive less. Rural and suburban Canada will be paying much more. This is a wealth transfer from rural to urban Canada. Nobody is going to stop heating their home because of the carbon tax. The tax will not impact climate change. It’s punitive and ineffective.
LOL what? There are more people living in urban areas than rural areas by factors of 10's, plus rural areas get an additional top up. So it's really that the urban people are paying the rural people. You can use other methods to heat your home and people have been making the change to heat pumps and electric heaters, but I understand that's hard for you to think through. The carbon tax is responsible for removing 8% of our emissions, which is a fairly good chunk. But again, don't let facts stand in the way of your lies.
Does your farm have Electricity? Do you realize that Ev´s cost like 5x less per km, and don´t need oil changes, and you charge them on the farm with dryer plug? It’s funny to see a media outlet in the PMs pocket try and minimize the real issue at hand! People cannot afford groceries already, but let’s increase the daily cost of fuel so they can go from a loaf bread to just drinking water!
The direct and indirect costs far exceed any 'rebates'. Most people are clueless about economic inputs, from production to delivery. Anyone who believes that taxes will solve climate change (98% which occurs outside Canada) needs to have their head examined.
Ok, let's believe for a minute he's right about food prices (which is a lie, cause we all know that even prices at no frills are struggling to be "unbeatable"). What about anything that need to be delivered to a store? Expect food we have building supplies, maintenance and any kind of service, buying vehicles in dealerships or fixing/maintaining them, electricity, literally anything that needs to be delivered one way or another to our homes. Second, and probably less related to this topic is the growing prices of rent and mortgages, which take a huge portion of our salaries. And believe it or not, these are driven by the carbon tax as well (a landlord/homeowner still has to go to home depot to buy the necessary to fix a home), so no wonder the carbon tax affect all aspects of living. Government finded media, you can't fool Canadians anymore.
You are also missing the point that during the winter, we import huge amounts of food from the USA. The truckers fuel up at the border in the states, then they drive and pollute in Canada the turn around and cross the border and refuel again in the states. Then our truckers pick the produce up at the warehouse in Canada. That warehouse pays carbon tax. Then the truckers deliver to stores. The truckers in Canada pay carbon tax. Then the grocery store sells it to us and the grocery store pays carbon tax to heat their stores. Then we drive home and pay carbon tax on our fuel cost to drive to the store and to heat our houses when we get home. Also, if you like to have a warm shower you pay carbon tax to heat your water. Obviously I don’t take hot showers any more. My carbon tax rebate doesn’t come close to covering the tax
So when a producer has to pay all this carbon tax, and the truck driver that delivers it pays it, and the distribution center pays it, and the store delivery pays it, and the store itself pays it, not one of them passes the cost on to the buyer. Right. And when the plumber and electrician and handyman pays it for transportation, and purchases from the aforementioned, not one of them passes the cost on to the consumer. Right. I could present a dozen more examples but I really don't think they're fooling anyone.
Micheal Chang and CBC are intentionally misleading Canadians . The PBO 's report , dated March 30th , 2023 , actually concluded “When both fiscal and economic impacts of the federal fuel charge are considered, we estimate that most households will see a net loss,” says PBO Yves Giroux. “Based on our analysis, most households will pay more in fuel charges and GST-as well as receiving slightly lower incomes-than they will receive in Climate Action Incentive payments.” .
Transportation is relatively efficient. It's not a big rig truck moving 1 head of lettuce, it's a container full of it. While the carbon tax is 10% of the fuel cost, on a per item basis, that's an extremely small amount. A 10% increase in fuel cost might mean a 2.5% increase in shipping costs. When the shipping cost per item is a few cents, a 2-4% increase in that is a rounding error. Grocery inflation is not driven by the carbon tax.
Nothing to solve if it was truly revenue neutral and it cost you millions to collect you wouldn't do it, the other falsehood here is that we are a carbon-producing country I've seen the math if you check the government website. They don't count forests in our country, trees need CO2 and produce O2 the trees in Canada absorb a lot more than we produce. It is the same in a few other countries so CANADA IS A NET NEGATIVE CARBON PRODUCER!!!!

Ok, I am positively impressed on finally CBC reported the PBO report showing the economic negative effects of Carbon Tax, economic slowdown, massive layoffs, companies leaving Canada etc. They just failed a few things to explain. The 0.15% effect in inflation is the direct cost only and, its only accounting the yearly increase, not the tax full amount. Also, didnt mention the cost of other carbon taxes we have like the capandtrade systems that is charged in the industry and passed to customers. The charge of GST on top of the carbon tax. And didnt mention the impact in climate of the carbon tax, 5 years of consumer carbon tax and not only one drop in emissions. That makes people wonder if they have to struggle for something that doesnt work.

The numbers and calculations are off, but they aim to justify with propaganda pieces such as this one that we actually get more back which is grossly inaccurate and "misrepresentation." You pay more and receive less, essentially, end up having to fill up more often and carry additional cost as a consequence over the month to month basis. These effects compound while you await a quarterly cheque for partial payment into this carbon taxation. Additionally, to state farmers do not have to pay this is also misrepresented by cost of fertilizers and other material cost, on top of machinery. This is supposed to garner support for a failed government policy that has majority of Primers against it, and with good reason under the guise of saving the environment when Canadians can barely survive themselves. The inability to read the room and respond accordingly is tyrannical in nature and similar to many over confident leaders that caused their demise. If capitalism worked there would be competition in the market and a corporation that passed less onto consumers would be likely more profitable.

So multiply it by 10?...
Also, rail is ridiculously more efficient than almost any other form of transportation, and we need to move stuff somehow. CN and CPR are free to convert their locomotives to straight electric instead of hybrids any time they want to spend the money.... Lord knows they have it.
They can't convert all their engines to electric, an electric engine couldn't make it over the mountain passes in the winter when batteries drain much more rapidly, they'd have to bring in the diesels to rescue the electric engines making it almost pointless to even try. Many have ditched their electric vehicles for gas ones here because it's too impractical and costs more. People with electric vehicles where I live have to charge them multiple times a day to stay mobile when it's 20 or 30 below which is much more expensive than operating a conventional vehicle not to mention who has the time to sit at a charger for an hour 3 times or more per day when we must work 2 jobs just to make ends meet?@@youngcardinal94

Before asking people to reduce driving or heating, show us how much less driving/heating you have done….
Well, let me tell you how much I have done. The average Canadian family of 4 waste about 1000-1500 dollars of food they bought from the store each year. That figure is way higher than what the average family pay in carbon tax after rebate. Our family has made a plan to eat what we bought, and only get news things when we finish the old items. Do we still waste food? Sure, but now waste less than 200 bucks a year. Not only did we reduce our waste but also carbon tax. We also got a smart thermostat and we lower our temperature when people are working and at night when we are sleeping. We pay almost half of what my parents use at their house with a conventional thermostat. As for driving, I always wanted a 5l mustang as a kid, but when I finally got my career going, I grew up and made the good financial decision of buying a used hybrid. I get 800km per 55l of gas. This reduced my carbon emissions and taxes from driving by 1/3 compared to my parents who are driving conventional cars. The problem with rail is that North American rail companies are currently obsessed with "precision scheduled railroading". This is a system of cost-cutting involving running overly long trains to save on infrastructure and staffing costs. The problems are:

This is a system of cost-cutting involving running overly long trains to save on infrastructure and staffing costs. The problems are:
1. Long trains no longer fit in sidings, so trains can't pass one another
2. Long trains get delayed, so staff are forced to work unpredictable hours
3. The lack of scheduling means that the railroads can only move low-value bulk freight.
No carbon tax on electricity. Sorry that is not true. You pay carbon tax on grid infrastructure maintenance. This is including repair crews, shipping electrical equipments/parts on gas powered vehicles... even bolts and nuts manufactured and use by your electricity utility company.

"Canada's budget watchdog troubled by spin around latest report on carbon pricing." was a CBC article from April in 2023.
Can't wait until that misleading broadcaster is defunded!

Yes, thanks to Covid impacting supply chains. You can't attribute those increases to carbon tax.
That's not sustainable.”
It appears none of the so-called experts actually own a farm or even know anyone who owns a farm.
These types of schemes are designed reward those who don't and punish those that do. The same people protect criminals while ignoring victims.
Canadian Pravda. The regime smiles on you.

PIERRE POILIEVRE PM 2025
Right. I could present a dozen more examples but I really don't think they're fooling anyone.
all these are coved by the rebate. Read the report.
Micheal Chang and CBC are intentionally misleading Canadians . The PBO 's report , dated March 30th , 2023 , actually concluded
“When both fiscal and economic impacts of the federal fuel charge are considered, we estimate that most households will see a net loss,” says PBO Yves Giroux. “Based on our analysis, most households will pay more in fuel charges and GST-as well as receiving slightly lower incomes-than they will receive in Climate Action Incentive payments.”
.
They don't count forests in our country, trees need CO2 and produce O2
the trees in Canada absorb a lot more than we produce. It is the same in a few other countries so CANADA IS A NET NEGATIVE CARBON PRODUCER!!!!
Do these people that dont pay carbon tax buy anything??? The tax is on everything you buy and is compounded several times following the product from raw material til you get it in the store
yeah I guess you forget that the GST is on top of the carbon tax which was 600 million dollars this year and will rise to 1 billion dollars

That makes people wonder if they have to struggle for something that doesnt work.
they're just trying to win people over because everyone can see how biased they are. let me know when they start investigating turdos many sketchy business deals, until then they remain paid shills
This one I truely hope the citizens hold him fully accountable to, unlike his handling of Emergencies Act (bloody sunday type vibes), being listed in the Epstein Island child trafficking, WE charity, Aga Khan scandal, SNC-LAVALIN scandal, blackface, relations with under aged students that received payouts, ArriveCan scam, election interference, et cetera.
