    This is when cars WERE cars, full of individuality and stuff you could work on without the need for a silly diagnostic computer like nowadays. A real trip down memory lane. Oh how I miss those days.

      I used to think ECUs were a terrible idea but at the end of the day it is one component that can replace so many mechanical systems cheaply and much more flexibly that it is worthwhile in the end so long as you don't have more than one of them (all that should be necessary). Electric windows on the other hand... And don't get me started on electronic handbrakes. Of course probably the bigger problem with ECUs other than the ECUs themselves is that they need a motor or solenoid to interact with everything mechanical. Solenoids should usually be pretty simple and generic but rotary motors I suppose can introduce unnecessary complexity. A microchip is of course completely unrepairable but the in theory it shouldn't ever break through normal use. If it does break then it is just the closed design problem enforced by car companies. They should only need cheap off the shelf microcontrollers. There are ECUs made from scratch from arduinos so they can't be massively difficult to replicate.
      What I do have a problem with is every individual component having its own complicated circuit or computer system. At most they should need a simple link for the central computer to control them by.

      I got an '88 GT. That still gets 650km off range if you drive normal. When driving like a maniac (it can be fun in that car) it's about 400km with a 43 liters tank. And it sounds better imo :)

    "Celery, apples, walnuts, grapes - in a mayonnaise sauce!" I used to get over fifty mpg in my XUD TD Xantia, which was a lot heavier, so their claim of 80 mpg (although rather boastful) is probably not far from the truth. Don't forget this was much lighter than a modern car of the same class. No leccy windows, air bags, electric seats and rubbish...

      It's true! It makes 4l of diesel per 100km. My old ZX with this engine made between 4,5 and 5 depending on city or b roads. It was great on economy so I suspects it had low emissions as well if the consumption was this low.

    I had two of these, including one in red! A tin can on wheels; slow and noisy. Performance wise, nowhere near as good as a modern hdi. In terms of reliability, however, its mechanical fuel injection was far more reliable, and the cast iron cylinder block not prone to warping due to overheating through blown head gaskets, as on the AX1.4D.
    My 5-door, AX1.5D in red, was acquired secondhand in May 2006, with186,000 miles on the clock, from a dodgy eBayer, at only £230, with a year's 'ticket'. Initially, it had starting problems due to the fuel filter system, but when modified, it never missed a beat. It burnt oil, but not excessively, and after a few thousand miles, the coolant level needed slightly topping up. By 300,000 miles, the head gasket was almost on its last legs, but the car still kept clocking up the miles, with no reliability or performance problems worth mentioning.
    Eventually, at 334,000 miles, the headgasket finally went and the car was scrapped. Running costs were almost negligible beyond what you'd expect in terms of tyres, brakes, exhaust, oil and oil filter. The most expensive repair was a replacement back axle due to both radius arm bushes going at around 260,000 miles. Amazingly, it never needed a replacement clutch, unlike my earlier AX1.4D which got through one at 50,000 miles, and which forced me in the middle of Preston town centre, after midnight, tired and wanting to get home, but with over 100 miles to go, to drive it without a clutch (don't panic Captain Mainwaring!!). Fortunately, however, my battery, alternator and starter motor didn't let me down.
    Fuel economy was always very good - about 63mpg, driven with care - but certainly not 80mpg as stated in the commercial. The AX1.4D could easily return 86mpg if you kept the speed down and annoyed all other road users of trunk A-roads and motorways!

    I had 2 Ax bought used: the 1988 1.1RE that engine was very tough and pulled really well, it was very reliable and comfortable, except the dashboard who cracked a lot and I also had a commercial 1.4 Diesel (second series) much better built, fun to drive and super economic but the dies engine was very prone to head gasket failure

    The Citroen AX was rebadged as the Proton Tiara here in Malaysia, back in the 1990s. My granduncle had one, and while the car is nice, it was too European and quirky for Malaysians used to Japanese cars.
    It never sold well, and now is very rare on the road.

    • @davidjenner5665
      @davidjenner5665 2 роки тому

      Well, you could certainly get 86+ mpg, from an AX1.4D, but that meant keeping the speed down to about 50-55mph and always maintaining a light foot on the throttle. Problem was that the 'gutless' engine slowed right down when encountering even motorway gradients, if driven that way. I actually got stopped by cops on the M74 for driving too slow! Being Scottish, they suspected drink driving! I now drive a Focus 1.6TDCI and its trip computer regularly shows 73mpg when driven in a similar manner. Its engine doesn't have the same problem with gradients though, and it's a much nicer car to drive. The AX doesn't deserve classic status: in my opinion it was never that good, apart from the AX1.4GT. Even that was no Renault 5GT Turbo, Fiat Uno Turbo IE, or Fiesta RS Turbo!

      I had an AX14RD, I had a GTD, if I drove it at the same speed as I drove the AX the MPG was better, it's also roomier while doing it. And my AX use to smoke like a chimney and I would not want to have hit a crisp packet in it. Saying that I loved the AX, the dreadful thing I hate about modern cars are the plush frilly cabins with LEDs and the 18" alloys, just give me the safety kit and you can keep the rest. Saying that the Golf will probably be my last car, driving with all the traffic now is boring, in the future I will prefer buses and take a taxi when there is not a bus.
