    Just picked up an 891 and finally got on the air. Your videos are great for us new hams. So many features in this radio. I found another person made a cheat sheet with a listing for all the menu items, which also helps me find stuff. Thanks again for demonstrating this feature as I was not aware this was even available. 73 👍

    This is really appreciated. So many radio 1 and done 'reviews' out there. So seeing someone like you use the same radio for a long time and then share something that delves a bit deeper is much appreciated. Love my 891 but am a bit intimidated by the menu tree up to what I've figured out myself. Then I see you deep dive into menus and what else the radio can really do by these type examples . I love activating POTA, and this stuff is invaluable! Keep up the 891 tips and tricks. 73

    Very interesting tutorial. Just a note from my experience: when releasing the PTT button a click noise is produced which gets recorded at the beginning of the recorded message. This can be significantly reduced (although not completely avoided) by keeping the PTT pressed while recording the message and releasing it only after the recording is ended by pressing the multifunction knob. Alternatively (maybe) one could activate the PTT through the CAT instead of pressing the button on the microphone... or using an external microphone... anyway great functionality and good tutorial, thanks KB9VBR!

    Some useful menu settings for this are 03-01 and 03-02, especially 03-01 DVS RX OUT LEVE which controls how loudly the radio speaker outputs your recorded message. Typically I don't want to hear the recording at much more than a low volume, especially if I'm in a busy area.

    Surprisingly, the FH-2 is not included in the FT-891 box. This is an absolutely necessary thing that fully reveals the potential of the message recording function. It weighs nothing, allows you to do CW QSO automatically, and with proper skill - even almost automatic SSB QSO😀

      What's even more surprising is that Yaesu included the FH-2 with the FTdx3000, but I had to pay another $90 to buy the accessory board to make it work with voice keying.

    Excellent video, thank you. Sounds as if the '891 is a glorified IC-703/IC-706! My one question is if the memory keyer will also work for RTTY contest phrases. AC9DN

    • @KB9VBRAntennas
      @KB9VBRAntennas  11 місяців тому +1

      I wouldn't call it a glorified 706, the DSP and filtering are generations better than what the 706 had to offer. But the FT-891 does fill a hole that the IC-706 left when it was discontinued. The voice keyer only works on SSB. There is a separate memory keyer for CW. But nothing for RTTY.

    Love this video! I'm having trouble getting my Yaesu-891 to work with my MFJ-939 tuner, every time I key up it re-tunes! Any advice?

    • @KB9VBRAntennas
      @KB9VBRAntennas  2 роки тому

      Do you switch to a constant carrier mode like CW, RTTY, or AM to do the tune? I've found that if you stay in SSB and try to do a tune, there will not be enough modulation for the tuner to carry out the task, so it will reattempt tuning with every transmission. I also think the 939 has latching relays. If it does, you can turn the power off after a tune and the tuner will hold the setting. I had to do this while we were going mobile for the MN QSO party. The wind & driving caused enough variability that the tuner wanted to retune with each transmission. I'd do a full tune and then disconnect the power on my LDG tuner to hold the settings.
