This helped me SO much! I am 52 years old and I still didn't know how those numbers worked. I've had many monoculars over the years. For some reason, people think they were quite a prize, and each one I had would get stolen at some point. Once, even at work during a burglary! Crazy, right?! Well, now thanks to the Internet, they are much more accessible and a lot cheaper than they were 3 decades ago. Thank you so much for explaining how they worked. I really needed to get a new one, and now I know what to look for.

@@CharliesDesk Yes indeed! I was able to go on Ebay and find a new monocular, and your video taught me just what to look for! The monocular I have now enlarges my TV way too much, and it's nearly useless to me. I'm recovering from foot surgery, so I'm not able to get up and do much. A lot of time in bed watching tv. Now, when the new monocular arrives, it will be so much better--I'll be able to see the TV better. It's hard to pick out a show to watch on Netflix when you still can't see the lettering, haha. So thank you SO much!! You taught me what those numbers mean, and it helped me immensely.

Hi Charlie! I just wanted to thank you for this sharing your knowledge! I'm visually impaired , recently with Stargardt disease and was looking to get some different monoculars than the 8x16 I got from my local clinic, and was struggling to find an affordable brand I felt I could trust. Seeing the ones you linked though, I see that they look identical to my Mattingly monocular just without the name, and at literally a tenth of what I was charged! Emboldened by the safety of Amazon's return policy, I'm looking forward to trying these and comparing!
Basically just wanted to say thanks for providing a information and a link to what brand you guys actually recommend for people to get for themselves! It helps a lot, especially with how little information on these devices is out there in general for low vision individuals, let alone information aimed them instead of aimed at physicians / instructors.
Anyway, hope you do well in things! Subscribed and checked out some videos like the one on the Moon Writer. Super neat and informative videos you have here!Thank you very much again for this video and it's description!

I appreciate how you provide multiple examples creating a pattern for a viewer to understand how magnification increases as the field of vision through the monocular decreases. Thanks Charlie!

Such a good point! Maybe you can be a guest desk for our discussion of technique!!

Divide the lens diameter in mm by the power to get the exit pupil in mm. Example: 6x16 scope = 2.66 mm A 5x30 scope is 6 mm. Choose a scope with an exit pupil of 2-3 mm for daylight only. Choose monocular with 5-7 mm for daylight and low light conditions. A 8x30 is better then a 10x30 for low light. A 6x16 is terrible for low light, a 7x50 is great for low light. I find 4-6 mm is the best for size vs performance. The lens quality and coatings also impact low light ability.

Thanks for the info. Since low vision is so diverse, lighting is very important, thus aperture is important

Can I use 40x60 instead of 4x12mm monocular for low vision?

It sounds like that would be such a high magnification that it would be hard to hold steady unless you were using a stationary tripod. That sound more like a sports and outdoor type monocular than one of these smaller low vision ones. That said, if it works for you for a purpose than it works.

a 40x60 would only be good for full daylight and not dusk, that is also to much power for hand held you would need a mount or tripod. Also the higher the power you go the more important high quality lenses are. Cheap high power scopes generally have bad image quality.

Is this really for low vision?
Many monocular sold at Amazon claim to be for low vision.
After I asked four simple questions, the answer is no. One person even it doesn't exist. Yes, it exists in special vision clinic?
Can low vision use these to take notes on first aisle?
Can low vision use these to find out the bus number n info below bus stop?
Can low vision use these to view the texts when play Wii or Xbox 8 or 12 feet away?
Can low vision use these to view the menu board at cash register at McDonald's?
    Extra credit
Can low vision use these to find out the bus number 20 feet away?
I have the feeling the answers are no.
If that is the case, it's not low vision

As a mobility specialist I taught people who have low vision conditions to use monoculars to read bus signs, and read aisle signs. We didn’t read a McDonald’s but we did use the monocular in Burger King. Not every low vision condition is the same, and monoculars aren’t for everyone, but I and other O&M’s and CLVTs use this brand of monocular for our low vision clients every day. Using one is a skill, and not for everything. It wouldn’t be good for playing Wii or Xbox for anyone. Its not for that. Its for spotting little bits of information. But if you’re central vision is too compromised its not gonna work for you.

@@CharliesDesk I got one decades ago. It still works for a lot stuff except note taking. Well school is long gone for me. I have been looking for 2nd or 3rd set. Most likely replacement of the current one.
Since, i don't want to lose my current one, i don't bring out. I use smart phone to look at bus stop. Not ideal, but better than nothing. Fast food, i just asked. So right now, i use it for xbox n WIi.
I research on Amazon, n those are bird watchers.
If i see the specist, i will get the answer. At this moment, it has not come to the need to take 4+ hour bus.
Since you are low vision specialist, your recommendation. Not wll devices work 100%. Even the first year, i got it, going to fast food with my deviCe was challenge.
I am hoping technology has improved.
Let me try the website n see what happens

What is your visual impairment? They don’t work for everyone? I am an orientation and Mobility specialist not a low vision therapist. This brand is reizen and made specifically for this purpose. Amazon is not a good place to search for specialized low vision items.
