- This one was long overdue and seems to work great. I've got a fairly big sanding job coming up, so figured the time was right to try this out.

New for you, not for us :)
Almost 3. Been here for over 2.5 months, so... It doesn't feel new for me :)
HI, just seeing you filing on top of your vice (vise), reminded me of your recent video on replacing the jaws, I made a suggestion but unsure you saw it, so this was it,
You said you often pound on the back plate of the vice, I would like to respectfully suggest that you could get a 5x5x2" piece of steel and mount it on top of the back plate!? on mine I have drilled a few holes, of various sized to help drive out pins etc,
PS, I could hear the mower, and I think its a great idea to upcycle tools that are only gathering dust, and modify them to become a useful tool again
I Build It Scrap Bin I'm sorry but if you could would you give the tools to me I am 14 and I am interested in woodworking and I live in Milton so I could pick up the tools myself.
Asking us if we want to see you build a lawnmower out of a table saw is kind of like asking a group of 8 year olds if they want to go for ice cream.
You have a point there!
Lol yup I want Ice cream too.
Make it real my friend!
I've seen pictures of a lawn mower with the equivalent of a squirrel cage on the back. That "cage" was big enough for a german shepherd, resulting in a 1 dog power mower.
Can we have ice cream while you build the mower?! That would be cool!
Don't give them away, build the law-mower!
Viewer from the UK here ;-) I am right with you for the ride on mower, I am thinking on the same lines with bastardising cordless tools for the job. The new Ryobi brushless ride on mower sparked my recent interest! I say Go For It!!!!!!!
Make it, make it, make it NOW
I'm so down for the lawnmower!
I'd love to see you build a mower out of those DeWalt tools.
A riding lawnmower sounds like fun.
who wouldn't want to see a dewalt mower? haha brilliant!
This is way to good for a "scrap" channel :)
GOOD JOB, JOE.
Definitely gotta build that lawn mower
I will save those tools from destruction! I can come and pick them up myself! Wherever you live in Canada!
I love what you're doing on this channel. Seems like it allows you to do much more stuff, much more freely. This kind of "small things" videos is very interesting and I'm very happy you're sharing all this with us.
john , im all for the ride on mower build !
Frankenmowers are pretty common here where I live (or they were anyway), but we mostly use motors taken out of retired washing machines.. Tools are expensive here
Mower for sure!!! The shop looks as clean as ever! Or it's hidden well! Looks great!!! Great videos!
Okay, I'll be the naysayer. You know that I'm in the US, John, so I don't have a vested interest one way or another. There are a HUGE number of giveaways for the "continental US only," so why not a Canada only giveaway? I don't think it's unfair at all. You're in a position to put the tools you can't use into the hands of some folks who will use them, who also don't usually get a chance to participate in a giveaway. Just my opinion. Sure some yanks will complain, but who cares? They'll get over it and move on with life.
Mark Lindsay agree with you there. A lot of other countries get excluded due to shipping cost. I would rather tools get put to use, than butchered.
Mark, the last (and only) time I did a giveaway, guys were coming out of the woodwork to enter. Never heard of them before or after, they must be professional contest enterers. Give one of those a prize over my loyal and dedicated followers? I don't think so.
Anyway, if I give them away, I can't build that awesome mower, and the mower is something that I really need.
Okay, fair enough. You asked, so I answered. (In other words, you've already started on the mower project, right? lol)
Not yet :D
I'm still mired, as I have been all week, in the videos, build articles and plans that will come out tomorrow morning. Once they are out of the way my schedule is relatively free.
Definitely do the lawn mower!
Absolutely build mower
I have an old Black and Decker belt sander I purchased back in 95 that has a stainless steel patten. Still going strong. I built a stand similar to yours for it. Works great!
build it
build it
build it!!!
don't forget the UK
Good fix. Thanks for the video.
I like it. Good fix
Try a little bit of polishing compound on the inside of your belt, it will be mirrored in no time
A mower sounds awesome!
I've got a Black & Decker belt sander I need to do this to before long, thanks for the ideas!
screw it! make the Frankenmower!
Do it John...
DO IT
It's aliiiive!!!!!!!
DO IT 😁
I'm intrigued
The greatest thing in that video is not the belt sander but that vise and the tools board in the background. How did you make it .
Definitely use the DeWalts to make a mower. I'm sure they will be thrilled to have their name tied to such an awesome creation. They would probably give you anything else you needed to finish it!
HI I watch all of your channels they all are brilliant I can't wait to see them I live in England thanks sharon
OH Yeah, build the mower!
I definitely will tune in for the build.
Good fix. And please go for the frankenmower, I am sure no one will be DeWastated 😉
Mower time!
I have a belt sander that has a steel plate, it doesn't have the cork (or any padding behind), i think the cork is just because of the soft plate, having the cork behind with that steel may raise the face, so the belt makes harder contact with that bend you put in and may wear it quicker, same with having the plate rising at the back..
The back of the belt is a bit like honing the surface of the plate.
my bosch is a plain steel, fixed at both ends and with felt under it. i built a two way platform stand inspired by yours, and thats how it sits 95 percent of the time.
somewhere out there is a door without a kickplate. great idea.
Hey John, you know what would be really cool to build? A remote control lawn mower 😀
Frankenstein the Dewalts!!!! No mercy
Definitely do the mower!
Make the Lawnmower.... Make it... Do it!
IF SOUNDS GOOD FEELS GOOD U DOING SOMETHING GOOD
pretty slick
I think the ride on mower build would be sweet. I've thought about making an electric mower and a whipper snipper. It would be interesting to see your take on things, John.
yes build the mower!
You have some fans in Canada, or a least one haha
You could always donate the Dewalt tools to an organization that will use them. Not sure if Habitat for Humanity would want them, but you get the idea.
Great video, I have an old Rockwell that I did this on nearly 30 years ago and still using it. The only problem is the leading edge is a bit harsh transition and leaves marks on large projects. Tried filing the corners but nothing seems to help. Just one of the things I have to live with and remember before finishing. Again I like your stuff and have subscribed.
I’ve got a similar sander and am having a hard time getting the dust bag off. Please tell me how to do it! Thanks!
I'm not against tearing apart perfectly working tools to make something different. Fact is that it would make good content. However if you are not going to use the tools you would be a hero giving them away to a kid fresh out of shop class. That too would be a cool video to watch.
You gotta do the mower 👍
Definitely make the mower from the DeWalt tools! I would really love to see what you come up with!
They're your tools, so do what ever you want with them. Build a mower, give 'em away -- ain't none of my business what you do with them. :)
Drag them behind my mini-van for kicks, fire homemade RPGs at them, build a super sized drone to fly them straight up to 15,000 feet, then drop them, turn the miter saw into a 12" skilsaw, turn the table saw into a meat slicer... endless possibilities.
Building your own Flymo could also be interesting.
Oh yes, bring on the Frankenmower :)
Being a few year old fix, I hope you don't mind if I ask how it worked out using the Stainless as opposed to hardened spring steel as the platen?
I could be wrong, but I would suspect the belt would wear a groove in the softer stainless over time of use. Given you did the fix using stainless and I'm in need of a new platen on a couple of my older belt sanders, I thought I'd ask since you now have first hand experience before doing the same.
I live in Canada about 1-2 hours north of you I think giveaway would be great. but 60v flexvolt ride on lawnmower would be cool
Do you prefer using the belt sander in the stand you made over the Rigid oscillating sander you have?
lol, I live in Canada so there's one more you can put on the list for a free tool...depending on where you are some of us could even drive over and save you the postage 😇😇😇
How often should one change a belt sander platen? I got my 4x24” Makita used and got new brushes for the motor and a new cord put on it. I’ve noticed a few dents in the platen and am going to make a new one this weekend.
make the mower! hell yeah
Whats the story behind the $20 bill on your tool wall?
Good fix I think also! Ready for the races! You did plan on racing it didn't you?
I need to do the same to mine, thanks for the video sir.. :-) When the plate worn-out the Belt Sander can't operate properly.. I like my makita 9924DB Do you have a trick to remove the sandbag, I use a flat screwdriver but I've damaged a little bit the bag tissus..
John, be careful with that steel platen, the edges always seem to wind up sharper than a straight razor after some use.
Build "The Heisz" mower and we will give you a million views !
strange question but what's the name of the pen you used to mark the steel?
Thanks for posting this video; it prompted me to repair my old Craftsman 4x24 belt sander.
I've replaced the cork pad but the backing plate was worn paper thin. Replacements parts are pure unobtainium. I don't have any spring steel in my scrap pile but I had another thought. How different could the platen be for a given size belt? Found a Makita part that looked similar on eBay. A little filing and drilling and now the sander is good as new.
I think you should build whatever you want from the Dewalt tools, BUT make it [modular?] so the tools themselves (maybe except for the table saw) get mounted as-is into the chassis, interfacing with the required stuff.
Actually, that'd be a LOT of extra work.
So I came her to correct your "misspelling" in the title. Only to learn that platen is a thing.
Good thing I watched the video before commenting unlike most other people that know everything.
Learning something new everyday.
do what ever you want.... build a mower!! scrap those tools!
Is there not a local school, college, or MakerSpace to which you could donate the unwanted DeWalt tools?
Maybe, but who said I didn't want them? Saying that I don't need them is entirely different from saying I don't want them.
What about a little wax on the plaren?
Maybe when it's a bit more polished?
Great vid!
Can we get an I build it shirt that's says the thing goes on the thing or something along those lines :)
A ride on lawnmower made from two cordless power tools? Did I hear you right?!
I'm in Canada:)
Make the mower.. please... and maybe radio control it ?
John, I want you see where are build the mower! :D
Lawnmower all the way
"I'm not a big fan of fairness and all that shit"
**Grinning shaking my head** John, you're a craftsman and a philosopher.
Great video I'm keeping this one tucked away in my brain closet.
Nice job. The mower would be a fun build. I thought I was subbed here I am now ;-)
Frankenmower please! :D
vice... hehe, Miami vice.
While I wouldn't mind a giveaway, it doesn't seem like you're too interested in it, and that's fine. I mean, why should you? You make good videos, and that's enough for me.
So I guess I'd like to see the frenkenmower.
Lawnmower!!!!
Great video! Defile the dewalt tools When are you starting the new table saw?.
Building a riding lawn mower would be a ridiculous use of those tools, so, obviously, you have to do it :)
Great vid John. Perhaps an option for your DeWalt tools is to donate them to your local Habitat Restore. They can either use them for a build or resell to raise money for the organization. I'm sure they would be more than happy to receive them.
John before you hack all the tools, pick at least one and give it to a local charity auction.
Make the frankenmower!
You really should use cutting oil (in fact any used oil will do) when drilling in metal. Even in sheets. It cools down the (step) drill bit and it speeds up the drilling process.
Today is Tuesday
Thursday now
my 2 cents... definitely build the mower.
The mercenary part of me wonders if it'd be better to just sell off the tools and buy a mower... But the nerd in me is really curious if a battery powered mower is feasible with those DeWalt parts...
I figure the motor from the table saw will easily drive the mover, while the motor from the miter saw should be powerful enough to spin the blades. It would be an interesting project, that's for sure.
It might be worth consideration to using the mechanism (possibly more than one of them) from a weed whacker to do the cutting. The thought of a circular saw blade in that configuration worries me.
About using the tools you mention to convert into a mower, well, I don't imagine they're robust enough. Rather destroy the tools turning them into something they're not really suited for, why not donate the tools to a local high school woodworking program?
Oh.. f*ck then.. just make a Frankstein from the tools kkkkkkkkkkkkk
Im In Canada you should do the giveaway haha
I wouldn't mind having those tools..... using a busted up ryobi table saw. I have to use any power tools out side too.....
DeWalt Mower! Do it!
My fiancee nearly punched me when you started filing. lol.
I can hear it ;)
Yess to lawnmower
