  • A severe Tahoe snowstorm in May made for some brutal conditions trying to leave camp in our Mercedes 4x4 Sprinter Van. With 8" of fresh snow, a bit of patience, some recovery gear, and a lot of grit, we work hard to get out of our campsite and safely back on the road.

    Did you significantly air down your tires? Doesn't really look like it, but it's often hard to tell on video. If not, that would have made a huge difference.

    • @AdventureOutThere
      @AdventureOutThere  8 місяців тому +1

      Normally we do. In the moment we thought we could just get out and then went straight for the winch when we couldn’t. Agree that airing down would have been a smart idea. 👍🏻

      @@AdventureOutThere A *LOT* of people either forget to air down, or really can't air down because they didn't bring a way to air back up again.

      @@VideosOffRoad We definitely weren’t thinking about it like we should have. We have the ARB dual compressor onboard air, we were just kinda in panic mode at that moment. Lessons learned! 🤠

      Excellent!! Buggy in summer and snowy in winter but well worth it.. white Mountain national Forest very beautiful but very dangerous in winter. We’ve had a few more deaths this winter when will people learn? I recommend you do the north east BDR very beautiful starting in Maine going all the way through New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and down to Pennsylvania. you won’t regret it. Very beautiful campsite all along the way your van will do very well.

    You should carry chains. Being in Nevada you' we're lucky .

    • @AdventureOutThere
      @AdventureOutThere  9 місяців тому

      Yes, chains can be helpful in certain situations, but unfortunately, not this one. Chains wouldn’t have done anything for the big rock we had to get over. Grateful we had our winch for situations like this!

      You were definitely in tire chains weather. I live in Northern Michigan. My 4x4 pickup always carry a full set of tire chains Nov 1 to April 1. And I got Mickeys Baja Boss AT besides.
      I ask myself what if I or my wife become deathly ill or a horrible accident. Gotta GO! CAN'T COUNT ON ANYONE BUT YOURSELF TO GET YOU OUT TO SAFETY.

    • @AdventureOutThere

      @@captseamus To each their own. 🙃 We have BFG KO2s and winching out was way easier than putting chains on this weekend. It was 5/4, way past your 4/1 timeline for carrying chains. You just never know what you’ll need to get out anytime of year in the Sierra! Lived here for over 30 years and these late spring storms are always a surprise!

    Why would you spend all that money on a Mercedes camper van take it in the snow and not have chains 🙃 or at the very least some truck claws

    • @AdventureOutThere
      @AdventureOutThere  9 місяців тому

      We typically don’t take chains off-roading, especially in May when we don’t expect snow. 😅 That’s what the winch is for, but to each their own!

    • @brians-space
      @brians-space 9 місяців тому +1

      Because we have a winch, MaxTraxx recovery boards and an air compressor so we can deflate for traction and then air back up on the pavement. Absolutely no need for chains. When we go off-roading or overlanding we know what we are possibly getting into and how to get out. Plus if we do get stuck, we have a small rolling home with heat, fridge and food to wait out any unexpected events. This is just what we do and we are always learning. We do appreciate any advice! Some of it would just not be the jam in our toast. Cheers!

      Chains do more damage than good and never help on rocks! Never. Tell me you don't go off road without telling me you don't go off road! Brian did an excellent job on a solo recovery!
      As well, you should be critiquing the thousands of drivers stuck on 80 and 50 that weekend. They should have had chains as they planned a highway trip to the mountains....
