As an avid Hozier listener, I thought I would give you all some context that you're missing out on, to no fault of your own! His pen game is insane and having listened to every single song he's released, there's still so much that goes over my head. This reaction was great! Take Me to Church is about sex, more specifically how Christian dogma and religious institutions in general police people's sexuality. The music video features two men in a gay relationship who are lynched after being outed. The point of the song is to try and reframe lust, not as a sin, but as a form of worship in and of itself. A necessary part of the human experience that cannot be stifled. Foreigner's God is about culture. More specifically, it's about the colonization of Ireland and how for many, fluency in the language of Irish Gaelic was lost. ("I've no language left to say it", "All that I've been taught, and every word I've got, is foreign to me".) He's mourning the loss of this part of his heritage, as well as confronting his (the speaker's) own biases towards women. He's in love with a woman, but struggles to come to terms with the traits he's been taught to believe are untoward (her "shameless wonder" and him with a heavy heart from "the weight of some other man's beliefs"). Cherry Wine is about domestic violence. The speaker is in love with a woman who verbally abuses and berates him, who steps out on him and who ultimately begins physically abusing him. The transition from verbal to physical can be seen in the lines, "The way she TELLS me I'm hers and she is mine" to "The way she SHOWS me I'm hers and she is mine, open hand or closed fist would be fine." He's trying to convince himself that the abusive incidents are few and far between ("The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine") as well as his worried mother ("Oh mama, don't fuss over me). Ultimately, he has to contend with the fact that no matter how enticing and enchanting her love can seem, that it is slowly killing him, "Oh but she loves, like sleep to the freezing", because a person who's freezing knows that once they go to sleep, they are not likely to wake up, but the allure can sometimes be too strong and the tragic fate is impossible to overcome. I hope this helped!
I laughed at that too 😂 The degree he was pursuing was music, too, so all the literary and historical references are just from his own knowledge and mind

@Marina-wd8gk this was before Henry's creation of the church of England, but you are correct in that much of the modern conflict between the two stems from Ireland being majority Catholic
@@Marina-wd8gk there were many British/ Christian invasions. The first famous being the Romans, but the British invaded finally with Catholicism. And when the Irish were finally Catholic, the British had a falling out with the pope. And so they tried again to proselytize to the Irish through invasion, and turned a chunk of Ireland protestant. he does have an album called Wasteland, Baby! that was released in 2019 that has so many good songs. most recently though is his album Unreal Unearth which in my opinion is better. it legitimately has no skips for me and he released 3 EPs with like 4 additional songs in each EP to add on to the original album. i’ve only listened to like 5 songs from the EPs but ive heard the rest are super good. Fair review, think you would like Unreal Unearth the most by far based on your comments (would go there next). Sound very different, production at a different level. Takes a little while to get the hooks in plenty of it but just keeps getting better and better after a few listens. For writing alone "First Time" I think is his best within it. Says some crazy profound metaphors for life followed by "anyway". Not sure there is too many writing this good with a melody to match at the moment.
Bare bones set up in his attic is where he recorded pretty much everything. With exception to Cherry Wine which was on top of an abandoned hotel in the early morning (hence the birds).
my favorite hozier song is Blood Upon the Snow (ft Bear McCreary), not on any album; it was written for God Of War: Ragnarok and it makes my soul ascend in a way no song ever has
A little fun fact: in French they call the big O "la petite morte" which means the little death and he references it in several lyrics, like in Take me to Church "Offer me my deathless death" and the next lines are "Oh, good God!" which is definitely something one may say while "dying" and also "She's the angel of small death" in the same name song. :)
I am so glad you guys are listening to him! I had the luxury of seeing him live this last year for his new album “Unreal Unearth” and he played a good chunk of this album and it’s so insane. So I would say react to Unreal Unearth before Wasteland Baby because I don’t think there are as many slower songs but the ones on there are so beautiful. Got my notifs on
Yayyy! I'm so happy you guys are finally reacting to this album! Hozier is such a unique and incredibly talented lyricist and singer-his use of metaphors and poetic depth makes his songs so fascinating to interpret. He touches on political matters, social issues, religion, love, and so many other topics in such a powerful way. And to think this was just his debut album? Absolutely mind-blowing. I really hope you react to his other two albums as well!
Ok! I want to say really quickly (this wont be quick) Hozier often speaks on very broad concepts rather than directly personal ones. Sedated is a good example of this. It was interesting seeing you two interpreting it as him singing about a personal, literal experience with another person, when ive always seen it as something much broader. I think the ‘You’ there is directly to the listener, talking about the culture of escapism we live in. And it definitely can be taken as personal! but as you continue listening to his music youll really see these broad themes emerge in Wasteland, Baby! through songs like Nina cried power and then Nobody’s Soldier in his newest album! Hozier is Irish, and this fact, the oppression of the Irish people by the British, drives a lot of his art. He is very politically outspoken, and driven to commentary on humanity as a whole.
oh also! if you guys do listen to his other albums (which i highly highly recommend) id suggest maybe reading a brief overview of mythology! Nothing too in depth but he frequently references greek mythology and classic works like Dantes Inferno!
Oh i’ve BEEN WAITING FOR YOU GUYS TO REACT TO MY MAN!!! fyi: foreigner’s god is about the catholic colonization of ireland as far as it’s my understanding
Cherry Wine is in fact live, in a field. The production all sounds the same because it was recorded in an attic, etc. Worst production quality of his albums, but still beautiful. Bear in mind he was like 22 when recording it all. Cherry Wine is also about domestic violence, very powerful and important song to me. Unreal Unearth is probably the best place to go for production and writing. Wasteland, Baby! has so many gems on it, but it is a bit all over the place. Unearth is much more cohesive, each song is a step through Dante's Inferno, until he reaches heaven.
Also, yes he's tall. He's 6'6" and when he sang It Will Come Back live, he's diddling the guitar, a thousand women screamed in the audience. And most of them were lesbians so it was very special.
Really enjoy your videos and LOVe Hozier, so happy you are reacting to this! … for me personally I always feel disappointed when you don’t show us the whole song, there are parts of some songs missing that are my favorite parts.. but overall still love watching:)
For context on foreigners god here is the excerpt from genius - he explores a lot on feelings regarding Ireland and loss of culture, etc. Hozier explores his feelings of alienation from his own culture through his love of a woman who doesn’t conform to society’s edicts. Similar to “Take Me to Church,” he mixes the sacred and the sexual in his worship of this woman who is like an ancient goddess. Said Hozier in a track-by-track video series on his UA-cam channel: It’s about feeling alien in a culture of feeling, feeling distant from your own cultural values, your own place, from the accepted ideas that you inherited. And not feeling right, and not being able to express that… just feeling wrong […] To a degree, of course, there’s an aspect of culture or cultural mentality that doesn’t sit right with people."
Thank you bros because wtf idk how but I apparently forgot how this album had me in a chokehold a decade ago. SUCH good music, I love singing this, but singing the higher harmony instead of trying to match the key he sings in. Honestly, if a book was written about my life, it could easily be titled: “The Art of Scraping Through” and I’ve alwayyyyyys felt that.
I mean "sedated" is playing with Plato's the cave and the nature of reality itself. It's an incredible play on an ancient philosophy. I about swallowed my tongue when you declared in a week and sedated easier to understand! There's like multiple levels of meaning in both and other literature that he's referencing. It's complex.
It’s cool that y’all can tell he’s going through something and learning things, even if you don’t know exactly what it is. It takes a few listens to fully experience the lyrics in his songs for anyone lol
oh sooo glad this exists. he’s been my favorite artist for ages, and he’s even better in person. too sweet blew up, but despite that popularity i feel like he can be so overlooked
coming from an irish fan of hozier, i can confirm that a lot of his vocal abilities and stylistic choices for his music are HEAVILY influenced by ireland and irish culture. the whole thing abt him talking abt death so much isn’t strange in ireland lmao we’re very morbid. same with the religious themes bc religion is a very touchy subject here and he choses to reject the manmade institution that catholicism has become. he’s very in touch with his homeland and speaks is gaeilge (irish language) on his new album. i’m so glad to have seen him live 2 times and recently found out my friends dad worked with him in a bookshop when he was younger, look it’s a small country lmao
Didn't he get his start in the choral group Anuna? Very traditional Irish music. Most people remember them from the initial Riverdance interval at Eurovision back in the 90's (before Hozier became a member)
I feel like quality music took an XFactor / Pop Idol break in the early 2010s…. (hozier a notable exception) This year, especially, feels like a full blown renaissance 💫
Foreigner's God is about how Ireland was brutally colonized by the British. They were forcibly made to speak English converted to Catholicism, which is now an integral part of Irish culture despite not being a native religion. This is where the lyrics "hate of some other man's belief" and "every word that I've got is foreign to me" come from; so much Irish culture was lost that many people can no longer even speak their native language and worship a god that is not theirs. That's probably why it was hitting so hard for you, it's definitely the heaviest song on the album. There's another song on his third album called "Butchered Tongue" that has similar themes. Glad you guys liked the album so much, it's one of my favorites :)
I’ve been a fan of his since his debut album, but his latest albums Unearth Unreal is insanely good! Top tier! It’s based on Dante’s inferno, and the levels of hell he’s traveled. The writing is incredible. I got a tattoo for his song Abstract because it resonated so deep with me.
LOVE Hozier. All of his lyrics can be taken multiple ways. So much religious and nature iconography combined with what it means to be human (good and bad).
My favourite quotes from this: “Do you know how many books I should have read before we did this?” And “Seems like he definitely has a bachelor’s or something, from some type of school” lol. I think we all feel this way when we listen to Hozier and try to understand his lyrics!
I’m sure someone has mentioned this in the comments somewhere already, but Hozier references this a lot in his songs, including the song “the Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene.” The phrase “the small death” comes from the French “la petite morte) (pls forgive spelling mistakes). It means an orgasm
I see a lot of comments telling y'all to listen to Unreal Unearth next and, (don't get me wrong) it is an absolutely INCREDIBLE album, but I just wanted to give a warning that it definitely has it's depressing moments. I'd take a quick look at a summary of Dante's Inferno before you decide to jump into that one, just so y'all know what you're getting yourselves into. That being said, it is hands down the best concept album I've ever listened to, no comparison.
"To be alone" is about being trusted to love a woman who haa been hurt before, in this world where rape culture is so prominent. It's hellish to be the recipient of that trust, having someone who's skin is crawling kiss you, to feel them put themselves in your arms. A show of trust ans vulnerability so great it feels incredible, but also feels like hell, because the thing that made trust hard shouldn't have happened (in this case, probably sexual abuse)
Guys you should react to " Movement" and some live version like "Nina cried power" keep it up Hozier may not be the biggest artist but he has very good and loyal fan base ❤
Half of the people I see reacting to him enjoy his voice but never think twice about the lyrics, so I really love that y'all dug into the lyrics. This man's pen game is so insane that you do his music a huge disservice if you don't pay attention to what he's actually saying and I'm glad yall put the work in.
With all of your attention to his writing style, I would really suggest checking out Florence and the Machine! I think Hozier and her write/sing on a completely higher level than what we usually hear in music 😊 loved this reaction!
FUCK YEAH oh my god please do all of his albums. Hozier is one of the best to ever do it. His discography is flawless and his pen is unmatched Foreigner’s god is about the colonization of Ireland, and how, when your very language and history is taken from you, even love feels like it’s been co-opted by the colonizers as the only words they have to express their devotion toward one another are ones given to them by those who oppress them and their free expression. It made you feel like that because it’s the cry of a nation that can’t even scream in their own native tongue
you guys need to react to alessi rose and good riddance by gracie abrams like the full album I’m not sure if you’ve reacted to it yet!!! love you guysss
I LOVE In A Week. It is grim, but in such a delicious way. It's not about passing away to join an already passed loved one, but rather just lying down in a field together, and being so lost in the perfect peaceful moment together that you just never get back up, you'd rather just pass away together in that moment, and let the rest of the world find your bodies later. It was a story he made up inspired by an archeological find in Sweden of two bodies buried together in a loving embrace. It's believed that the man had died and his wife chose to be buried with him, so she likely took a poison then laid in his grave, embracing him as she passed. When they were found, they still had their foreheads pressed together and her legs were laying on top of him like they were cuddling in bed or something
i need you guys to react to lewis capaldi’s “broken by desire to be heavenly sent (extended edition).” lewis has such a unique pen game & powerful voice! the song in the extended edition are just mind boggling.
ohh, you guys should do louis tomlinson’s “faith in the future (bonus edition)” & then do his “LIVE” album! the quality of the “LIVE” album recording is incredible! the transitions are gorgeous & seamless.
Some context - like real people do was inspired by an Irish folk tale he was raised on. Also, Irish folk tales tend to have death as a central theme so I think a good part of his references to that can be attributed to the culture he was raised in.

Aww this is really so endearing, how long have you been a fan of my music
And most of them were lesbians so it was very special.
i need to see you guys react to his other two albums DESPERATELY. i love the vibes, earned a sub
I adore watching people discover Hozier! He's so underrated ❤
Thanks for your support, how long have you been a fan of my music?
One thing about Hozier, he is NOT afraid to be morbid AF 😂
Thanks for the beautiful comment, since when have you been a fan?
Really enjoy your videos and LOVe Hozier, so happy you are reacting to this! … for me personally I always feel disappointed when you don’t show us the whole song, there are parts of some songs missing that are my favorite parts.. but overall still love watching:)
Thanks for this heartwarming comment, Samantha. How long have you been a fan of my music?
For context on foreigners god here is the excerpt from genius - he explores a lot on feelings regarding Ireland and loss of culture, etc.
Hozier explores his feelings of alienation from his own culture through his love of a woman who doesn’t conform to society’s edicts. Similar to “Take Me to Church,” he mixes the sacred and the sexual in his worship of this woman who is like an ancient goddess.
Said Hozier in a track-by-track video series on his UA-cam channel:
It’s about feeling alien in a culture of feeling, feeling distant from your own cultural values, your own place, from the accepted ideas that you inherited. And not feeling right, and not being able to express that… just feeling wrong […] To a degree, of course, there’s an aspect of culture or cultural mentality that doesn’t sit right with people."
10:30 the in sync “damn” is killing me 😭❤️
It was the "what the fuck" " yeah" - for me 😂
30:40 lol, I love it when he randomly just starts telling us a spooky fairy tale, but to each their own!
Thanks for the amazing comment, how long have you been a fan?
OMG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS OOOOONE
thank you sm for the reaction, it was so lovely watching you enjoy it:))
Love this reaction! So genuine from the both of you. Really hope you do his other two albums, the pen game only gets better
Thank you bros because wtf idk how but I apparently forgot how this album had me in a chokehold a decade ago.
SUCH good music, I love singing this, but singing the higher harmony instead of trying to match the key he sings in.
Honestly, if a book was written about my life, it could easily be titled:
“The Art of Scraping Through”
and I’ve alwayyyyyys felt that.
I love when people resonate with my music on a deeper level, how long have you been a fan?
I mean "sedated" is playing with Plato's the cave and the nature of reality itself. It's an incredible play on an ancient philosophy.
I about swallowed my tongue when you declared in a week and sedated easier to understand! There's like multiple levels of meaning in both and other literature that he's referencing. It's complex.
Hozier is a poet, i love this album SO much ❤
WASTELAND BABY PLEASE!
It’s cool that y’all can tell he’s going through something and learning things, even if you don’t know exactly what it is. It takes a few listens to fully experience the lyrics in his songs for anyone lol
I am so ready for this
oh sooo glad this exists. he’s been my favorite artist for ages, and he’s even better in person.
too sweet blew up, but despite that popularity i feel like he can be so overlooked
This perfectly sums up my personality and people naturally gravitating towards my craft means alot to me. How long have you been a fan?
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS
hozier, my beloved!
He has been one of my favourite artists since Take Me To Church dropped as a single 🥰 so stoked you guys are reacting to him 😊
Thanks for the beautiful comment
omg i've been waiting for this one
I’m so glad I went and saw him in concert. Amazing music, amazing voice
I hope you did had an amazing time, how long have you been a fan
first hozier reaction huh? on this day, their lives forever changed
FINALLY!!! My boys are on the good shit!!!
coming from an irish fan of hozier, i can confirm that a lot of his vocal abilities and stylistic choices for his music are HEAVILY influenced by ireland and irish culture. the whole thing abt him talking abt death so much isn’t strange in ireland lmao we’re very morbid. same with the religious themes bc religion is a very touchy subject here and he choses to reject the manmade institution that catholicism has become. he’s very in touch with his homeland and speaks is gaeilge (irish language) on his new album. i’m so glad to have seen him live 2 times and recently found out my friends dad worked with him in a bookshop when he was younger, look it’s a small country lmao
Didn't he get his start in the choral group Anuna? Very traditional Irish music. Most people remember them from the initial Riverdance interval at Eurovision back in the 90's (before Hozier became a member)
Hozier didn’t have to go this hard in 2014… like this album is way ahead of it’s time
I feel like quality music took an XFactor / Pop Idol break in the early 2010s…. (hozier a notable exception) This year, especially, feels like a full blown renaissance 💫
It's always been go hard or go home kinda mentality for me right from time, since when have you been a fan of my music?
@@lizlebreton3890Thanks for the unwavering support, how long have you been a fan?
Yes, absolutely my favorite reactors! I love me some Hozier!
I really appreciate your comment, how long have you been a fan of my music
first comment and FINALLYYYYY been waiting for this one🎉
So a translation for Org*sm in French is Petite morts which translates to “little deaths” or “small death” hope that helps you decipher that song :)
Hozier is my absolute favourite ❤️
I’ve been a fan of his since his debut album, but his latest albums Unearth Unreal is insanely good! Top tier!
It’s based on Dante’s inferno, and the levels of hell he’s traveled. The writing is incredible. I got a tattoo for his song Abstract because it resonated so deep with me.
I've never heard Hozier's music described better than "His Vibe is Devotion"
in a week is prob my fave song by him and the most romantic song ever
LOVE Hozier. All of his lyrics can be taken multiple ways. So much religious and nature iconography combined with what it means to be human (good and bad).
small death is a reference to le petite morte, what the French call orgasms directly translated to the little death, hence small death
Great reaction. If you like this writing, you should react to his latest album Unreal Unearth. Amazing writing and vocals. Keep reacting!
My favourite quotes from this: “Do you know how many books I should have read before we did this?” And “Seems like he definitely has a bachelor’s or something, from some type of school” lol. I think we all feel this way when we listen to Hozier and try to understand his lyrics!
love the reaction!
From Eden is about the Serpent in the garden being in love with Eve and following her into the world.
Wow, this is so perfectly described... How long have you been a fan of my music?
they are backkkk
I see a lot of comments telling y'all to listen to Unreal Unearth next and, (don't get me wrong) it is an absolutely INCREDIBLE album, but I just wanted to give a warning that it definitely has it's depressing moments. I'd take a quick look at a summary of Dante's Inferno before you decide to jump into that one, just so y'all know what you're getting yourselves into. That being said, it is hands down the best concept album I've ever listened to, no comparison.
Thanks for the well detailed description, how long have you been a fan of my music?
"To be alone" is about being trusted to love a woman who haa been hurt before, in this world where rape culture is so prominent.
It's hellish to be the recipient of that trust, having someone who's skin is crawling kiss you, to feel them put themselves in your arms. A show of trust ans vulnerability so great it feels incredible, but also feels like hell, because the thing that made trust hard shouldn't have happened (in this case, probably sexual abuse)
I love u guys
Guys you should react to " Movement" and some live version like "Nina cried power" keep it up Hozier may not be the biggest artist but he has very good and loyal fan base ❤
He only has 2 other albums id recommend them in order:), unreal unearth might be one of my all time favorite albums
Thanks for the comment, how long have you been supporting my music?
I would LOVE to see you guys react to You + Me album by Pink and Dallas Green!
The CORRECT reactions to From Eden. The way he grabs the consonants in that song, so satisfying! iNNocence...
Half of the people I see reacting to him enjoy his voice but never think twice about the lyrics, so I really love that y'all dug into the lyrics. This man's pen game is so insane that you do his music a huge disservice if you don't pay attention to what he's actually saying and I'm glad yall put the work in.
UNREAL UNEARTH 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I’m a Hozier fan and I love this. ❤
I wish my family would react this way when I put in hozier
Sounds like a fan, how long have you been a fan of my music?
18:10 that echo-y sound is because he recorded this whole album in his attic!!
With all of your attention to his writing style, I would really suggest checking out Florence and the Machine! I think Hozier and her write/sing on a completely higher level than what we usually hear in music 😊 loved this reaction!
Yall will LOVE his album Wasteland, Baby (it’s also my all time favorite album and i wanna know what yall think of it)
Thanks for your comment, how long have you been a fan
"small death" is basically referencing orgasms...in french orgasms translate to le petit mort if i remember correctly
FUCK YEAH oh my god please do all of his albums. Hozier is one of the best to ever do it. His discography is flawless and his pen is unmatched
Foreigner’s god is about the colonization of Ireland, and how, when your very language and history is taken from you, even love feels like it’s been co-opted by the colonizers as the only words they have to express their devotion toward one another are ones given to them by those who oppress them and their free expression. It made you feel like that because it’s the cry of a nation that can’t even scream in their own native tongue
“Like Real People Do” is about a phenomenon called “bog bodies”. Look that shit up it’s crazy.
I think he speaks a lot of addiction and how he knows he is on the brink of death. He can visualize it, but he can't give it up either.
Thanks for such beautiful analysis, how long have you been a fan?
you guys need to react to alessi rose and good riddance by gracie abrams like the full album I’m not sure if you’ve reacted to it yet!!! love you guysss
Yeah, Hozier is not for the weak. His last album was pretty much a musical essay of Dante's Inferno.
I live 20 miles from hozier, so proud to have such an artist noticed from Ireland
*FINALLY A HOZIER REVIEW* ❤
WASTELAND BABY NEXTTTT PLEASEE
i need you guys to react to lewis capaldi’s “broken by desire to be heavenly sent (extended edition).” lewis has such a unique pen game & powerful voice! the song in the extended edition are just mind boggling.
ohh, you guys should do louis tomlinson’s “faith in the future (bonus edition)” & then do his “LIVE” album! the quality of the “LIVE” album recording is incredible! the transitions are gorgeous & seamless.
🩷🩷🩷 he is incredible
U should react to his new album unreal unearth ❤
Folk have described his brand as Irish yearning and I couldn't think of a better way to put it.
Some context - like real people do was inspired by an Irish folk tale he was raised on. Also, Irish folk tales tend to have death as a central theme so I think a good part of his references to that can be attributed to the culture he was raised in.
