Lucas Upright Thanks for checking. If you click on one of my links first I get a commission on anything you buy, even if it’s a different product. So feel free to click on one of my links before doing any shopping ;) 🍻
Your introduction as you panned over the minatures and your terrain was awesome, that's a top quality overview of the project you were about to talk about. It's production quality like that, that will increase viewer buy in... top notch! Also, thanks for making all these videos ❤
I have used milliput since the mid 1980's but only for filling and repairs, you have showed me I have wasted all those years and could of been sculpting figures, and also you have showed how to stop the problem of tacky milliput, clever use of water, never thought of that, many thanks for the tips, you are awesome, keep up the good work.....
Loved the intro information provided in this series. Very helpful info and Amazon links. Will watch your more advanced videos when I get my "My Little Scythe" figures painted with my nieces. For now, you've given us a great foundation (which will be a pill bottle!).
For basing I would recommend 2 part plumbers epoxy, much much cheaper think I paid about 3 bucks for roughly the same amount as milliput. Only downside is it cures in about 5 min though to me that's a upside
Thank for an inspiring video. I'm learning a lot. I paint my own minis, but I'm trying to go the extra mile now by having something on my base, to give my mini an environment and just to look cool. I'm going to try Milliput some time then.
Spiders look great! Miliput is great for this kind of stuff. Easier than a small rock to drill through. Easy to sculpt. I think a lot of people would have just skipped the bases for the spiders, but those people also would have missed out on the cool action poses! These things look like they are ready to jump up and crawl onto the adventurers. Speaking of having no base...a Kids in the Hall reference for you: "...The Doors had no bass. But don't let that scare you, my friend. Let that liberate you! Viva la Doors!"
Yea, in retrospect these spiders are one of the few minis that would actually work well with no base at all. But I'm a sucker for continuity with my minis. PS I am always up for a Kids in the Hall reference, one of my all time favourites.
So you're one of the first youtubers that I've watched that lives in Winnipeg!!! Somehow that blows my mind :P it's where I grew up. Love your videos! I plan on making some minis in the near future so thank you! :)
I just painted this exact spider set last week and noticed the same problem. I managed to superglue the tips of the legs to the 1” round reaper bases. They seem pretty solid, but if they come loose, I’ll keep this in mind.
I have been holding onto some milliput from about 6 months ago and never got around to using it before I picked up my 3D printer. Since I have access to the full plethora of STL files for D&D, now might be a great time to start printing some bases using that Milliput. Never considered basing the miniatures other than dead center either, so I will be trying that.
Something i have always done on my mini bases is to paint the rim of the base a different color for each mini. it makes keeping track of HP and initiative for each spider/goblin or any other similar minis it doesn't distract from the look of the mini but makes DMing an encounter much easier, i also fill the bottom of the plastic bases with hot glue, it adds some weight and traction to the mini
I used to mark the rims with pips or Roman numerals for this.....then I switched my DM style to using HP Pools, and minion rules so I don’t have to track which hit points land on specific low level monsters.
How do you keep your miniatures (and other projects) from frosting over in the areas where you are dabbing superglue (CA)? Is the acrylic paint somehow a buffer to the CA and prevents white frosting? I've noticed extensive frosting when superglue is bonding a bare plastic base and model together (no base coat or top coat of paint; direct plastic-on plastic only). Do you cover frosting (if any) with touch ups of paint? Beautiful work and fantastic channel. Thank you for inspiring!
Oh that could solve my problem. I printed out some 'Mini's (13 cm resin 3D Figurines) and most of them stand fine on their baseplates. But two are to heavy on one side and fall over. Glue is not strng enough to hold them. I will make a little step for their feet and glue them on the step. Hope it will work out.
Hi Jeremy! What about using a tiny chunk of XPS foam and maybe some sand for the same effect on these min bases? Your results are great though. Btw I love your approach of keeping mini painting at a "ready for play level". It shows how cool our minis can be without spending tens of hours on them.
You can do that, I did that technique when I first started. It works, just not as nicely and not nearly as durable. Not sure pinning to foam is a great idea though. It would eventually get screwed up.
Poster tack. I cover this and all the other fundamentals in my miniatures basic series. All the stuff everyone expects you to already know is explained there :)
Hey man. Have you ever thought about sculpting your own minis? I was thinking about doing it myself as an upcoming project (when and if I have the time). If they were sculpted with clay I suppose a mould could be made of them as well, and then more ones could be made of liquid PVC or Metal.
Epithet are fine. I just find milliliter easier to work with for this sort of thing as it’s softer and acts more like a standard clay. Also it’s cheaper for me to get so I reserve green stuff for places where I prefer it’s properties.
Hard to tell without the kit in hand, but it looks like the one spider has the legs more inward so all eight would fit on the base, while the other two seem like you are supposed to glue them belly to rubble pile with the legs hanging over the base.
I don't have one either! I'm a seasonal crafter (starting around October ending after Christmas) but it will absolutely be the first thing I purchase when I get my craft game kicking again.
You can try....DAS is airdry, so it shrinks and can crack. It's also not very adhesive so you may need to mix in some PVA. Milliput, like Green Stuff, is a two part epoxy putty. If you can't find those brands go to your hardware store and look in the glue section, there are a variety of companies that make two part epoxy putties usually used to fix broken items and leaks.
They don’t NEED it. But here’s the reasons you may want it. 1. Aesthetics 2. Movement rules in most tabletop games are measured from the base. 3. The occupied space of a creature in most games is designated by standardized base sizes. 4. So your collection has a cohesive look. 5. Dynamic poses 6. Making bases is fun, especially if you enjoy making terrain So it’s all preference. My preference is to have the same base on all my minis.

I want to purchase the 200ml bottle of primer, how can I make sure you get credit?

Actually was thinking of getting that exact set, so thanks for the heads up on up coming issues.

also I am now subscribed to your channel
This is fantastic! I just ordered WizKids Spiders minis and seeing this I know what to do now. Thanks BlackMagicCraft!
That intro!!! Excellent video!

these look sooooo much better! great job!
Would love to see you make another custom like the Collector!
Great vid!
Don’t worry I’ll do more in the future :)
Black Magic Craft Awesome! I'm looking forward to it!!

Fun fact there are many successful full time youtubers in the Peg 🙂
Videos just keep getting better and better. Keep up the good work.
Could you do a video showing how you painted those spider minis?
I just painted this exact spider set last week and noticed the same problem. I managed to superglue the tips of the legs to the 1” round reaper bases. They seem pretty solid, but if they come loose, I’ll keep this in mind.
I’m guessing that was their intent but I didn’t really trust that option long term.
I have been holding onto some milliput from about 6 months ago and never got around to using it before I picked up my 3D printer. I really love basing my minis away from center.

NICE intro narrative!
Great intro and awesome stuff as usual!! Thanks!
Looks fantastic!
Such a good method!
When it dry, the spider sculpture is hard and elastic right?

I just glued them onto the base via the legs, but I will definitely try this next time.
This will be great for an incounter my playlers are coming up to
Dude, your videos keep getting better!
Thanks!
I am in this exact position with spiders that don't fit on the bases I want to use for them. Will see if this works for their sculpts!
Is Milliput similar to the JB weld putty?
Oh that could solve my problem. I printed out some 'Mini's (13 cm resin 3D Figurines) and most of them stand fine on their baseplates. But two are to heavy on one side and fall over. ah, makes sense! thanks for the reply.
I've been collecting minis for a long time but hardly paint do you have tips for starters
FYI the piles of detritus aren't actually meant for basing, they're just meant to be lair highlights for the spiders.
I’m not sure about that, the 3D renderings of the product show them as bases.
those spiders are terrifying!
Another great video Jeremy, keep them coming !!
Thanks 😊
This worked well thank you
nice intro!
what is that blue stuff you use to attach the bases to the corks?
Poster tack. I cover this and all the other fundamentals in my miniatures basic series. All the stuff everyone expects you to already know is explained there :)

Did you miss the video from a few weeks ago where I made my own custom mini?
I did see it, the cadaver was really awesome! What I meant was from scratch, but I suppose that's quite close,
nevermind.
Your best video ever!
Very useful, can you then do,like sculpting the miniatures?? Dam that would be hard as hell
Did you catch this video?
ua-cam.com/video/yracwZG_T8E/v-deo.html
Oh,yeah that looked awesome
What bases are you using? I noticed they are thicker than what Wizkids provides.
Reaper
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial thank you
Just use a big bottle cap. Like a gatorade one or a milk bottle cap.
hey, nice turorial! i was wondering, what is the music you used in the video? i'm sure i recognize it from somewhere, but cant quite place it. thanks!
there is this new foam clay for cosplayers. more like mat foam I guess when it cures. would that be useful, compare in pricing?
Is there any reason not to use Green Stuff for crafting bases? Is it just because Milliput is a lot softer before it cures?
Epithet are fine. I just find milliliter easier to work with for this sort of thing as it’s softer and acts more like a standard clay. Also it’s cheaper for me to get so I reserve green stuff for places where I prefer it’s properties.
I hate 🕷️ but this was awesome, with a capital AWE and a capital SOME!!!!!!!
Hard to tell without the kit in hand, but it looks like the one spider has the legs more inward so all eight would fit on the base, while the other two seem like you are supposed to glue them belly to rubble pile with the legs hanging over the base.
I think that was the intent maybe, I just wouldn't trust gluing the legs straight to the bases, the point of contact would be too small.
Awesome vid! Any reason in particular you don't use an airbrush?
Because I've been simultaneously too lazy and too cheap to get a set up yet! I should have one....I really really should have one.
I don't have one either! I'm a seasonal crafter (starting around October ending after Christmas) but it will absolutely be the first thing I purchase when I get my craft game kicking again.
Off topic question but where do you get all your cool shirts? I have such a hard time finding shirts in a similar style.
All the shirts I wear on the channel come from www.redbubble.com
Starts at ~ 4:00
Also, just for curiosity, what music do you like
Awesome man,can I use DAS for this? Having trouble finding miliput here in Brazil
Great, Jeremy Helpful as always thanks man!
Even google image search “epoxy putty” and it will give you a good idea of what to look for.
you can add pva glue to air dry clay to keep it from cracking
Jesus those mould lines.
I’m trying to read your shirt. Looks awesome but I can’t make it all out.
What’s it say??
Ignorance is Strength......hopefully I don’t need to explain the reference 🧐
Why do figures that can stand on their own needs bases at all?
They don’t NEED it.
But here’s the reasons you may want it.
1. Aesthetics
2. Movement rules in most tabletop games are measured from the base.
3. The occupied space of a creature in most games is designated by standardized base sizes.
4. So your collection has a cohesive look.
5. Dynamic poses
6. Making bases is fun, especially if you enjoy making terrain
So it’s all preference. My preference is to have the same base on all my minis.
I got them and the bigger one and they are all annoying if you try and use the bases they come with.
Great vid! My arachnophobia was triggered the entire time tho :p
🕷
i imagined giant spiders pushing around shopping carts :S and i cried
I only click on goofy cover thumbnails to say I never click on such silly gimmicks.
good video as usual... BUT I can't believe how much you Canadians and Americans pay for GW paints !! theyre only £2.50 here in the UK
That’s why I don’t buy any citadel stuff other than washes which I only use on certain things.
This is the worst ASMR I have ever experienced. Well done.
From looking at these prints in the past im pretty sure those arent bases but scatter terain...
