Briggs and Suffolk Cross over

  • This engine is made up of parts from two different manufactures separated by nearly 4000 miles and 10 years of production. Briggs & Stratton and Suffolk Iron Foundry engines built in the 1950’s are very similar engines. So similar that you can make a running engine from the two!
    The engine runs the following key parts
    Briggs: Cylinder head, sump, gear oil pump, connecting rod, piston and rings.
    Suffolk: crank case, crankshaft, cam, ignition and carburettor.
    It runs ok. And with some more work would run even better. I do have plans to fit an earlier Suffolk ignition which will allow an earlier Suffolk cowling to be fitted making it look more like a Briggs engine.

    Interesting engine. I wasn't aware they had some kind of tie up.

      Nothing in writing to back up my theory. But they are so close it’s almost certain Suffolk designers had seen a Briggs and Stratton engine.
      I’ll have to do a detailed video of the early Suffolk and Briggs.
