Does Life know about quantum mechanics? - Jim Al-Khalili

  • Physicists and chemists are used to dealing with quantum mechanics, but biologists have thus far got away without having to worry about this strange yet powerful theory of the subatomic world.
However, times are changing. There is now solid evidence that enzymes use quantum tunnelling to accelerate chemical reactions, while plants and bacteria use a quantum trick in photosynthesis - sending lumps of sunlight energy in multiple directions at once. It even appears that some animals have the ability to use quantum entanglement - what Einstein called “spooky action at a distance” - as a compass to ‘see’ the earth’s magnetic field. Welcome to the exciting new field of quantum biology.
Jim Al-Khalili CBE FRS is an academic, author and broadcaster. He holds a Distinguished Chair in Theoretical Physics at the University of Surrey where he conducts research in quantum physics. He has written fifteen books on popular science, between them translated into over twenty-six languages. He is a regular presenter of TV science documentaries and the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme, The Life Scientific.

Hello, this might not be on topic as I am posting this to a number of channels but it is something that I have considered but not seen mentioned in any videos or books before.
In relation to electrons and photons and how they can sometimes show particle and wave like properties there is something which I think would make for a great experiment if we can in fact trigger a single photo to be fired.
If one photon is fired off then would two observers see it? Is it just one particle that flies off in one direction or does it emanate from the source as an expanding sphere?
If it is a single particle emitted from the source then how is it possible there are so many of them, what I mean is that if we can see light from a star that is 10 million light years away then someone that is another 10 billion light years past that object can see it as well which means this light can be seen at any given time from the parameter of a sphere with a 20 billion light year diameter.
if you were to consider the amount of atoms it would take to cover such a sphere, even just one atom thick that 20 billion light year sphere would contain more atoms than that of the light source and yet it can be seen from any given point on that sphere considering there is no obstacle blocking the photons path.
So then how it is that a photon is just a particle, if that were the case there wouldn't be enough photons coming from a source to allow it to be consistently visible from any point.
Just quickly I want to add that I am having trouble getting some communications because of some of my work and research being hijacked by some departments in Melbourne Australia and I have been attacked and people given the run around and diverted, Identity theft and all sorts of fraudulent activities and it has cost a lot of people a lot of time and wasted a lot of opportunities in order to claim my work and research is someone else and giving them the credit. It is a big problem which has stopped me from doing anything worthwhile and instead of any support they tear me down as though their yelling and screaming trying to discredit me will be foiled if any credibility is given to me. I cant find the right people to work with in order to get some things started.
It is a big problem. I don't work or associate with anyone because most are constantly trying to run off with my work and ideas and claim it is theirs as it has happened many times over and I know it happens because it is unique and original.
