  • 'Hey Johnnie Cope' is a Scottish Jacobite song that commemorates the Battle of Prestonpans, which took place on September 21, 1745, during the last of the 4 Jacobite Risings. The Jacobites, led by Charles Edward Stuart, 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', faced the government forces led by Sir John Cope.
The song is a taunting and celebratory piece that mocks John Cope for his perceived cowardice and the hasty retreat of the Hanoverian army. The battle was a significant victory for the Jacobites, lasting only around 10 minutes, and resulting in the rout of the Hanoverian forces. The song reflects the joy and triumph of the Jacobites as they sing about Johnnie Cope fleeing the battlefield in haste.
The lyrics of 'Hey Johnnie Cope' capture the spirit of the Jacobite supporters revelling in their victory and poking fun at the defeated Hanoverian commander. It has since become a popular folk song, keeping alive the memory of the Battle of Prestonpans and the Jacobite cause in Scottish history.

The author of this song Adam Skirving a local farmer visited the battle site the same day it happened, after it ended. He wrote two songs about the battle this one and another one that described the battle in more detail.

At 02:05 it should be Berwick not Dunbar. General Sir John Cope took the old Roman Road over Soutra before veering left for Berwick upon Tweed.
The road to Dunbar was blocked by the Jacobites.

The British army lines were properly drawn up but weren't up to dealing with the Highland charge. Generally the film is way too positive about BPC.
